That's too bad, man. I've been in the Air Force for about 4 1/2 years, and I think it's one of the best thing I've ever done. The military isn't for everyone, but it's sure done a lotta good for me.

The military might not be a good choice for anyone who's bored with his or her life. After a few years at a University not knowing what the hell I wanted to be, I ended up doing three years of ARMY ROTC in college with a smile on my face because I was basically told I would be flying Apaches after OCS. Unfortunately, my superiors decided for me that I would be better suited performing on-foot night assaults and tank ambushes. The one time I figured out what I might enjoy doing, and Uncle Sam rips me a new one. The sad thing is, I almost reverted back to my 'leaf blowing in the wind' stage and let it happen. Glad I fought it every step of the way, now.

Also, the Internet Tough Guy label is such bullshit. Humans get aggresive--this is obvious in our war-cluttered society. So just when someone get's aggresive or cusses, you say Internet Tough Guy? Then what're you, an Internet Pussy? I don't know about you, but I'd much rather be a Tough Guy than a Pussy.

Judging by your custom PS1 and DC DVD covers, you're a pretty talented artist. Maybe you should get more into your artwork to give you something to do. It will help to take your mind off of everything, I'm sure, and it will also give you some more motivation. If I had that kind of talent, I'd sure use it a lot.

it seems like you dont need to quit gaming, but you need to play games less.

I would probably stop buying games because they're on sale. Buy a game that you like and play it, but get out and have fun with some friends.

Dont buy 2 and 3 games at a time. You'll have more games to play than you need to play.

i feel somewhat like you do right now. I feel like i'm playing too many video games. Recently i've spending more time looking for game deals and buying games than i have actually been spending on playing the games.

You may just want to take a little break from games. I wouldnt give it up all together, but i'd cut your playing time down alot, and just get out and have fun.

It sounds like you have several issues at play here and I'll try to break them down as best I can. I apologize in advance if I misinterpreted anything...

1) You miss the highs you got when you were living a street life.

You have a comfortable job now, your bills are taken care of and finding money for stuff like food and gas is no object. Basically everything you thought you needed to be happy you have... yet something's missing. It's dull. You seem very fond and attached to your experiences from that time (the good ones at least), more than likely because it was full of adreneline rushes and emotional highs that are nearly impossible to recreate, and for all your accomplishments you still feel like you left something behind. This is a perfectly reasonable feeling but it's one you have to deal with...

2) You keep your mind off it by playing video games

Giving them up is not the answer. As I believe someone else said, if it wasn't video games it could be any number of things... television, porn/strippers/women in general, drugs, your car, etc etc ... Most obsessions arise not out of a sheer love for the act but to mask other problems or fill a void. Your life feels fairly aimless and stagnet from what I gathered, so you seem to use video games as a way of escaping that.

3) You need help

There's no shame in seeing a psychologist. Everyone has some sort of issues and you'll be one of the more normal people they've ever encountered I'm sure... This isn't about getting on medications (I'm very anti mood control substances as well), it's about talking with someone to help you get to the root of the problem and from there, come up with ways to deal with it. You seem to need healthy ways to regain some of that rush you once experienced, but it would take a thorough evaluation of ur life and ur personality for anyone to make any really helpful suggestions as to what might fill that void.

All and all... you're not that bad off. You're overweight, but you're not morbidly obese. You've got a comfortable job but you miss the positive aspects of living on the edge... You're in a relationship you weren't quite ready for and are not sure how to deal with, but the fact that you recognize that puts you ahead of most people I know. It won't happen over night, but your life can change... you just need to take the initiative.

Well isn't it nice that someone decided to come in 2 days to late and compose an essay in your honor mookyjooky. I'm sure if a little while you'll have things figured out.

Set aside an hour a day for gaming (before bed or early morning) that's what I do . . . once in awhile you can play more. If a game bores you, move on.

Otherwise, live your life . . . exercise, work, do fun things, contribute to your community (religion, big brothers, boy scouts . . . do something meaningful).

Games are fun but less fun if they are your only focus in life.

You have a very scary talent.... ;-)

Thank you for taking the time to type all that out to help me....and you put it in an easy to read format! I really needed to read this....thank you. And you're right, every bit of it.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their comments....it made me realize that CAG is MORE than gaming....it's a real breathing community that I truely feel a part of. Thanks for everyone helping me make a decision that I couldnt make the first move and plan out on my own. It really means alot to me.

And it's good to realize I'm not alone on this as well.

I'm gonna slow down on gaming and sell a few games to clear off my plate. I'll probably stop playing games for a month or two - but after this....I dont think I could stop reading CAG. Thanks guys!

Then go back to doing your drugs, get shot, or aressted, or HIV from needles and die.

I really don't care, if you had more fun doing that then go back to it. But if you weigh 270, you need to loose weight otherwise you will die anyways.

You're an asshole.

I could really care less what you did with your life back when you were younger, but on the topic of video games. Sure at points I get tired of the same crap getting force fed down peoples throats and I get nostalgic about how fun games were back in the days, but for the most part there are at least 5 great games a year, and theres always going to be at least 1 kick ass game a year, something totally different and fun. People seem to have the complex of
"If it's cool to the masses, then it's uncool for me", seems to be in every aspect of peoples lives from music to movies to games, If you think it's uncool to be cool and vice versa, that's a really retarded way to look at things. If your nostalgic about games, that's fine, most old school gamers are but just because games aren't 8 bit anymore doesn't mean gaming is crap now. Sure gaming has become diluted over the years but it's called evolution, 5 years from now somone else is going to be bitching about how games aren't like they used to be.

So no I don't think I'll ever give up being a gamer, The real world we live is a giant terd, video games are an escape from that stinky log we call life, and as long as people keep making games I'll be gaming..

Ok, my opinion on this whole thing.

As far as drugs go, that seems basically like your crutch etc. Also remember you were much younger at that time, and had run and gun..but probably also foolish attitude towards things. You could have had fun back then with anything else.

I am in your situation, I had wonderful teenage years, and got into my share of problems with cops etc. Im now 24 as well.

Back then I was about 155, and now Im 178. However thats because i got myself into a gym to increase my appearance for the ladies and myself.

So now you are the age wear you are doing adult things, many of your friends have probably grown up and gone their ways, while others have not changed a bit, but are going nowhere. And that is a problem where a lot of young adults exp, even though it doesnt sound like you went to college. Many people after college exp a similar depression when they get into the real world, and realize how things are boring.

No longer do you have the freedom to roam around late at night with a pack of friends and get into trouble...and if you try now, the penalties are a lot worse.

Ive always told myself that I would do my best to not let my age defy who I am. In the aspect of, growing up doesnt mean acting like the grown ups around you.

Gaming, even online is very lonely (in refereance to long repeated periods) and altough some people survive and enjoy gamer only social interaction. Most people still need physical presence interaction. Join a Gym, rec sports team, some type of club, go to school, get involved with something.

Don't get into the routine that your work becomes your life.

Yes you are 24, making 40k..but that doesnt mean anything if you are not happy...or not working towards some type of happiness outside of retirement in 40 years.

Last year I took up snowboarding, and the year before I learned to surf. Its a good thing that you are wanting to make a few changes now, so do it sucka

True. "2 hookers and an 8ball....I cant believe that I write this shit"

The uncool to be cool thing....I'm not really a part of...the game I play most now is Halo 2. I just feel that games are becoming more expancive and busy work....to add on the 80+ hours. Look at GTA.... GTA feels like a fucking tech demo.

I just see the industry in a whole going down the drain, and I start feeling like why am I playing this shit? It's been too many years in the industry and were STILL dealing with bad VO? What the hell are they fucking doing?

I could go on and on about this...but this isnt the point of this thread. The point is just a "realization" that this "stinky log we call life".....may not be so stinky....Life IS what you make of it....and I just feel like games maybe keeping me from moving on. Life is short....I LOVE games....really....I love the industry, the fact that it is a evolution of media...I love the concepts and the ideas that go into a game and I watch G4 (even though it sucks ass). I just Love gaming....but I'm starting to see the other side....the side of just sitting there, not doing anything productive, and sometimes I think about that. Thats all.

My life consists of going to work for 8 hours coming back home and doing the same thing over and over, so considering how boaring my life is and from the sound of it yours is also, video games is an escape from it. Sure life is what you make of it but I'm just a normal 9-5 run of the mil office jockey with a cubicle, games are a release from it. I can be a Superhero for an hour, a race car driver driving at 300mph, or anything in between. If you having a mid gaming life crisis that your problem, If you don't enjoy games like they used to be then just play the old games or don't play at all. Everyone knows the gaming industry is pretty much filler theses days, and it's sad but like I said before, theres always going to be a kick ass game that blows people away. You either do something about the problem your having with games, or don't do anything at all. I don't have that problem, I love to game, and for the most part I only buy games that I know I'm going to love, so I don't have any issues with filler crappy games. I feel for you, and totally understand where this is coming from maybe you just don't have the will like you used to play games, or maybe theres some under lying issue, I don't know I'm the furthest thing from a shrink there is but all I know is that i love to game, I've been gaming since before I could do long division and I won't stop gaming.

Thanks for the responce....and I feel kinda odd being called a "sucka" by the Nega-T.....thats awesome!

I think I'm gonna join a gym...and maybe I'll by a sitback bike machine and play Halo 2 at the same time....I'll be working out and playing games! Booyah!

Mooky,

WOW it takes some serious balls or desperation to open up to a gaming board. Thats respectful..

It looks like Joseph actually took the time to help you out.

One thing is I went through these phases also but not all at once. I got out of gaming when I hit 15 or so and only recently got back into it. About a year or so ago. I alos now miss my high school "younger" days.

Anyway I find working out with a partner to be the absolute best thing I can do. I totally regret walking into my basement to hit the weights (most nights) but once I am down there I am happy as ever to be doing it.

Once I am done and the following day I feel like gold and thanks to my determined workout partner, we are making some huge progress.

Anyway I game to get away I dont much like the "Real Life" games that everyone loves so much whether it be the next war game or GTA. They dont let me escape. I prefer other games over these, and have found that they keep me the most interested.

I also have a few other hobbies, my Supra, paintballing, quads, my house, my wife etc.. I try to divide them the best I can but they normally go in spurts. I get my paintball "fix" for a few months then move back into car mode etc.

The one thing I will give you and do what you want with it. Over the past 5-7 years I have been trying to get on a solid, easy to understand weight lifting program.

I went from just do certain workouts and increasing reps or weight to alternate "plans nothing kept me interested or seeing enough gains. Until the last year when I found this site (and no I am not benefiting from this one bit) www.musclenow.com

What an amazing book that shows some great results. I found the site by accident but I can tell you from personal experience that it has allowed me to stay motivated and make some serious gains. Take a read over at the site and see if it fits you. I was not disapoointed at all with any of it.

Anyway good luck with everything.
