Since everyone here did such a great job helping me and my girlfriend find her a digital camera, I figured I'd try for help with her laptop selection.

She wants a lightweight, attractive, compact notebook for college.

It obviously doesn't need heavy graphics processing or anything since she'll be doing Powerpoint, Word and online things. A good battery life is important, and a decent display as well.

Any help with the search would be appreciated, maybe places to find older models of the Sony line.

Thanks in advance.

Alienware laptops are only about 8 pounds.

But seriously, the IBM Thinkpad laptops would be perfect.
I hear they are lightweight and ultra durable.

You can drop one on the floor and it will instantly stop the HDD and brace it so it doesn't get damaged.

Dell has been running the $750 off $1499 notebooks promotion like crazy recently. Get either the Inspiron 600M or 700M for $750 shipped. Both are around 4-5 lbs.

well that certainly rules out sony vaio lightweight :)

Reviews for the Dell 700m are generally positive, and with fatwallet deals it can often be had with decent specs for below your price range.

Actually...it does. But you need a program called Virtual PC, which is slow and buggy. So it's not really worth it anyway.

If it didn't have to run Windows, I would definitely suggest an iBook, but for the price, those Sharp notebooks are very enticing.

Helped my friend narrow down the choices for her to pick and mull over. So kinda similar situation to yours.

IBM X-series. Most reliable, most ugly for girls.

Fujitsu P7xxx series. Cheap and light.

Sony T series. Expensive but pretty

Her requirements were Pentium M processor, light (less than 4lbs), and battery life (at least 5 hours and up). She went with the sony at the end.

unless you want to be constant tech support, I second (or third?) the iBook idea.

Girls love clicking on links, aim profile links, and pop-ups guised as system messages. The nice thing about the laptop aside from the power/features in the lightweight, light cost, package, is that she doesnt have to worry about virii or intrusive programs or spyware or any of that crap.

Unless she is a computer whiz (at least proficient enough to manage firewalls, port forwarding and the like), or you don't mind servicing the computer once and a while, I would set her up with something safe (and she'd probably think it's pretty).
