How long have you been out of work? We had state insurance for our kids in Illinois (it's a different type there as there are no income levels, so check what your state has), and it was unbelievable insurance. All I had to give them was the prior months income to get the kids covered and then pay a low premium per month. If you aren't making any money, you are probably able to get covered through whatever your state insurance is.
Edit: You are in Illinois though I think you said. Definitely check in to their state health insurance. Blagojevich has expanded the state insurance program quite a bit.
Just looking at the kids coverage we had, Illinois also has something called Familycare. For a family size of 1 (just you? not quite sure if that's what it means), you can make almost $38,000 and still be covered though would have to pay a premium.
CHECK INTO IT!! You should be able to get state covered health insurance.

You might fall under a different insurance category, but i would bet income levels and premium pays wouldn't be all that different.
