Indie Games Winter Uprising

I'm sure Cthulhu is good, but with rare exception (Paper Mario/PMTTYD and Mother 3, and the PM games have action to them, even a tad in Mother 3) I never get far in turn-based RPGs. Lose interest before long. So I'll pass on that. I keep meaning to download the demo of Decimation X3 and would also like to try the demo of ZP2KX. I think I'll grab those demos tonight

Game is awesome. If you enjoyed Breath of Death you'll easily enjoy CSTW. I can see some people complaining about the $3 tag, but It's due to size according to the developer.

I'm not complaining, per se, I was just hoping it would be 80 since I have a random hundred points sitting in my account. I haven't played it yet but if Breath of Death VII was any indication it's easily worth that $3.

Just went through and downloaded the trial version of just about every game in the Uprising. I've already seen a few that I just might pick up.

I generally feel the same way a lot of the time, but CSTW does a lot to distance itself from the trappings. There is a lot less maintenance and the combat is very quick. It auto-heals afterwards too.

I tried and then bought bought Decimation X3. It's a really fun game. Bullet-hell Space Invaders. I've played it for hours now, so easily worth the 99 cents.

Oh, the rest of the Winter Uprising reviews!
Aphelion Episode 2 - Pretty formulaic RPG. If you like JRPGs, you'll like it, but there isn't anything here that hasn't been done before.

Decimation X3 - Pretty intense Space Invaders-style shooter. Tons of points to be had here. Simple, but a lot of fun.

Asteroids Do Concern me - All flash, but very little substance. Awesome scrolling intro provides a hilarious backstory, but the game is only fun for about 5 minutes.

Chu's Dynasty - Smash Brothers style fighter, with amazing graphics and surprisingly fluid gameplay

I just picked up both Breath of Death and CSTW tonight. Haven't played a RPG in a while, and since both of these are on the shorter side for RPGs I think they will be right down my alley. Its hard for me to put 40 plus hours into a single game...

I'll let you know what I think once I get a chance to play them crunchewy... BTW you gotta do yourself a favor and get the Marvel DLC for FX2.

Actually I ended up buying CSTW last night. So far seems fun-ish, but it's still got the problem of all random-encounter RPGs - that I find myself dreading combat. Actually... I dread moving. I hate random encounters. They turn what probably should be something fun, into something obnoxious. I really don't get that design approach. Having said that, I like the humor in it and the style, and I'll continue on with it at least for a while. If it's not too long I'm more likely to play through it. I also tried Breath of Death, but the humor in that wasn't clicking for me, so I figured Cthulhu was the better fit even though it cost 3x as much. Still pretty cheap.

Yeah, I need to get the Marvel DLC, but must admit I'm more interested in getting PHoF:GC, even though Gottleib didn't have very good game designs in the electronic era. I'll get Marvel at some point, perhaps soon.

I'm just disappointed that it's pretty much just Decimation X. Third version of the game with very little difference between them.

I haven't played the others, so I didn't have that issue. I was wondering if the other versions were worth picking up. I guess not.

Yeah, I would say X3 is the definitive one. X2 is a windows phone game I believe.

I agree with your point about random combat though, and the general sentiment that 40 hours is way too long for an rpg of this nature. That's why I really like these super quick RPGs that are far shorter.

I think I can give a thumbs up for Cthulhu Saves the World. I've played for several hours now and am enjoying it. The humor is a big plus (I greatly prefer RPGs that don't take themselves seriously, and obviously this one doesn't). Also I think one thing that saves this game is the feature where it stops putting you into random battles after you've been into X number of them in a given dungeon or other area. I was very happy to see that this count sticks even if you leave a dungeon/area and come back. I like the retro graphics and the battles are fun once you realize that they aren't going to be as endless as you first thought. The game isn't that hard, at least not so far, which I also consider a plus.
