The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

LRG keeps touting they have a game everyone expects to come from another publisher, wouldn't surprise me a bit if it's Hollow Knight at this point.

I think he means for the Vita. Any games being made must have already been submitted to Sony for final production(Vita production i believe end 1st Quarter of next year 2019).

The game, Hollow Knight, can still come to other platforms of course. Im hoping now for a physical Switch version since Vita is no longer possible

Yep, that's what I meant. Thought I was in the vita thread earlier, that's my bad.

This is a repost of my earlier post from the GameStop thread, but the following PS4 games are down to $9.99 which means that they qualify for the current buy four used games for $20 promotion. All are PS4.

Armello: Special Edition
God Wars Future Past
Nobunaga's Ambition: Taishi
Yoku's Island Express

My copy of Armello even came with the soundtrack CD. :)
I got this exact same set, except I replaced Yoku's with Tempest 4000 (already have Yoku on Switch). Tempest is a steal for that price, esp. considering it just came out in July I believe. A fantastic game.

Also, I believe Armello was a new->used conversion. Mine also came w/ the soundtrack and looks brand new.

I think they all were. I got a sealed copy of God Wars and Nobunaga Taishi.

Wow I already got a shipping confirmation for Snake Pass, now if only other small print companies could follow suit...
It would be really nice to see the small print companies stop doing so many preorder sales and just offer items when they have them in-hand to ship

I can't even fathom caring about that. I got a backlog a mile long anyway and I'd much rather have an open pre-order where I'm not trying to buy every game within a two minute window.

LRG has a variant cover of Enter the Gungeon to be sold at a later date, but I think I will be going for that book bundle today.

Read that people were calling it Total Carnage x Aliens

Very happy got my order in for Enter the Gungeon Ammonomicon Hardcover Book.
Didn't need a physical version of the game since I have it digital for both PS4 and Switch.

For your information, the physical copy features exclusive content not available digitally.
I am aware of that and don't think that the content (a playable skin) justifies me spending $30 for a physical copy when I already bought the game twice on two different platforms and have gotten plenty of hours and enjoyment out of both versions.

The book looks awesome and I'm glad they decided to sell it separate and didn't force people into buying the bundle.

I've heard great things about all of these, pretty excited for their lineup. Seems they're really going for top-tier releases.

Xenocrisis looks amazing. In for PS4.
Thanks for introducing me to this! It looks awesome.

I’m hoping the carts and ROMs ship before the modern versions are put up for sale. Though i’d prefer a Vita version, the Switch version will have to do. Hopefully it’s twin stick on on modern consoles.

Was able to get Sayonara and the two art cards. Dang those cards went ultra fast, as in pretty much I checked out right after the sale went live and when I looked at the stock for the cards as soon as I checked out they were sold out. Sayonara sold out within 13 mins. I'll guess the vanilla Sayonara will sell even faster.

I was going to pickup the Vita CE with the two art cards, but the art cards sold out during checkout. I’ll just wait for the regular release now.

Still salty as shit that they are going down the alternate and CE exclusive cover art hole now. I actually had a rather lengthy back and forth with them on Twitter about it (all very cordial). LRG got sooooo much flak for it, and they have now stopped doing it. I hope that SLG knocks it off, too. After all, we just had this with two cover versions of Stardust Galaxy Warriors. They claim the way they number made it so that they can't make it reversible, but a simple numbered slip cover with the number with reversible art in the case beneath would fix that. So the cynical (ie realistic) person can plainly see that this is just a way to get much more money out of each release. *Sigh* I guess we'll just wait and see.

On another note, I'm quite curious to see what the prices of the Vita LE will be like on the second hand market. Some of SLG's releases have gone for stupid money, and this is a 999 copy LE of a rather beloved, if a bit niche, older franchise.

vgp.ca has a black friday deal including Root letter and Chaos;child for 30$ CAD (so, much cheaper USD but I don't know exactly how much)

Having said that, I haven't enjoyed a good murder-sim VN since Danganronpa 1 and 2 (that counts, right?) and it was especially due to the over the top characters and deep level of interaction, a la Phoenix Wright. I don't enjoy story-only VNs too much, other than Hakuoki I guess. Wasn't a huge fan of Steins;Gate either. Would I enjoy either of these?
Its currently around $22.81 USD, so not a bad deal at all.
