The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

Does anyone else get this message from GS when they order something online?

Not sure why, I get that with every order... but never had any actual trouble with an order.
Vinny, that's their automated fraud protection kicking in. Either due to too many orders placed in a period of time, the dollar amount of the order or some other logic that's lost on me. They tried to explain it to me, though it was basically an automated system that was running in the background. As long as it doesn't seen an issue with real fraud, you shouldn't have an issue with it.

Thanks for the clarification... I initially thought it was b/c I kept ordering the same used games over and over in hopes of a complete copy (returned to store if disc only, until I got a complete copy) but there's no logic to them. I'm now convinced it's for them so that they can verify store inventory since they're shipping from stores.

I tried that and they stopped me after ordering 2. Were you able to order more after returning them? It won't let me place it and just tells me to call customer service if i try to get more.

Seems like their system has a hard time tracking their stock of certain items and blocks you. That's why I don't even bother trying to get DS stuff cheap anymore I usually end up with a full cart only to get blocked at check out :p. You can play around with whats in your cart to find the product that's causing it but it's a pain in the butt since the issue only pops up during the final step meaning it's a complete guessing game unless you want to deal with canceling orders later. Customer Support may be able to check if any games in your cart are really out of stock, but I've never bothered calling them since I figure they would just push the order through resulting in later item cancellations or orders staying open forever since they probably don't have any copies left.

I doubt they would go through the effort of blocking certain items that you keep ordering they would probably just get tired of you and ban you outright for "return fraud" or something if they saw you as an issue.

No, 2 is the hard limit for anything. After two, I just give up but usually, I can either get a complete copy even with a limit of 2.

Only had 1 in stock. Total was $26.xx after gift card

So Stardew Valley physical is up for pre-order on Amazon.

The Prime 20% discount is not applying for me, though. I hope they're not counting this as not a new release since they offer the PS4 digital version. Already sent an e-mail about it.

Really appreciate you e-mailing them to get the ball rolling on this. Respect.

Amazon does offer the discount on all new pre-orders, it's just not automatic and takes a few days to show up.  Pre-orders are adjusted automatically.

Still have Yakuza 1 and 2 reprint from years ago. I can't remember the company name now but it was the same place that sold the Fatal Frame 1-3 reprints for $80 if anyone remembers lol

Deponia was awesome and an easy platinum. I really hope they do more games from the series but I'm doubting it considering I hadn't even heard of this one!

How do these games even still get a reprint after so many years I wonder? I'm in for a copy of the 1st One and Second One as I already have 3 and 4

Got my 2 copies of Gravity Rush today. One of them is apparently "sealed" even though it says used on the back. Could it be a reseal or is it a real Sony seal?

Gravity Rush is the top while the bottom is Oxenfree from LRG.

I've received games from AWD that were resealed, but it was easy to tell because the Used sticker on the back was underneath the cellophane.

Nice, I grabbed a copy of Yakuza 1 and 2.  I used to have both Yakuza games on ps2 but they went missing along time ago.  When I looked to replaced them, Yakuza 2 was crazy expensive. Thanks for the heads up! :D/

Wow awesome.

Yakuza 2. And right before Yazkuza 0 came out I was toying with the idea of spending $100 on it to replay the series (only one I didn't have).

Nice to get it for less than half that.

I guess if they can still reprint PSP games, they can still reprint PS2 games.

Except they can't reprint PSP UMD games anymore; the Retro City Rampage dev tried to get his PSP UMD version produced, but UMD production has ended. He ended up sending out an empty PSP case instead.

Didn't they reprint one of the Summon Night games on PSP a couple months back? I could have sworn they did. I was only half paying attention because I can't into that series. I think there was also a Persona restock on PSP as well.

PS2 games are on DVDs and not proprietary media - no reason they couldn't continue to be manufactured.
I got a "great" business idea for you, and it's called "Limited Run Reprints". I have no idea how difficult the entire process is of reprinting a game due to old licences or how profitable it can be, but there might be a market for it?

Been looking into it for a year. The problem is that Sony hasn't been very responsive regarding it. I'm mainly looking into PS1 games at the moment because I have a client interested in reprinting their PS1 classics with new covers.

Wish I could! I haven't even got a yes or no on whether PS1 games can still be printed. What I know about PS2 games is vague at best, unfortunately. This is all completely on our radar, though, and it's something I'm chasing.
