The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

Is the game for sure online only?  It sounds like the game has computer controlled enemies, so it sounds like it could play offline.

I've tried reaching out to the developer and publisher and haven't heard any response yet.

As far as I've been told, it's not a limited pressing. It will be reprinted until demand runs out.
Is this going to be any different from how they handled Shovel Knight?

"Until demand runs out" is a bit subjective. Shovel Knight was released only about a year ago and is now OOP.

Ordered vita and PS4 just in case. Wouldn't want to miss this.

SRG replied to my inquiry about offline mode.

The game does have an offline mode.
Yes, but there is a rather big caveat to that. Absolver can be played offline, for the players who are mostly interested in discovering the game world and learning about the story. However, the core experience is really based on multiplayer, whether it's the combat or the social components, so we recommend playing online!

Essentially you can walk around the game world, but you can't really do much unless you're online.

I'm thinking this only applies to the regular edition, but nobody has been able to confirm that as far as I've seen.

I meant the collectors edition.

I didn't expect Shovel Knight vita to be uncommon either.
Shovel Knight wasn't published by Fangamer, it was published by Yacht Club. As far as I know, they printed 5,000 copies and they took a full year to sell out of those. The minimum reorder quantity for Vita is > 2,500 units so considering the first pressing of 5,000 took a year to sell out there was no indication a second run of 2,500+ copies would be worth the investment.

There are computer controlled enemies, so there should be at least some combat in offline mode.

Ah thanks for explaining. So Fangamer just sold the copies for Yacht Club, but here Fangamer is acting as publisher for Undertale?

The shovel knight situation was strange- it seemed like a new version was releasing every few months for a while; by the time any physical was out I know I'd exhausted my interest. I think the demand was there but everyone had already acquired the game at some point.

Yeah, the Vita version was rather late to the party, but I was rather happy to have it. I for sure don't see them printing any more copies, as there is no way they burn up 2,500 at this point, unless they are offered at some crazy discount(which serves no real purpose). I think they had 3500 or so in preorders, and then they added the 1500+ on top of that, so those where the copies that took the year to finally be sold out. But if it would have been offered earlier, they may have sold that amount and then some, but know way to know at this point.

I just grabbed the standard Undertale, as there is absolutely nothing I want in that collector's edition, except for maybe the box. LOL

Got the PS4 standard edition Undertale + the soundtrack, which was $25 + $15 + $5 combined shipping = $45.  Didn't feel like paying $19 more for the locket in the collector's edition, although it looks nice.

Kind of annoyed that the soundtrack (both separately and the one in the collector's edition) is packaged in a DVD/Bluray size case though.  I hate when albums are weirdly sized because they don't fit together with the rest of my CD collection.  I have to throw them in the ghetto corner with all the other misfits.

What the what? $75 asshole SE fee on the new SRG game and they haven't even been bothered to ship their last game yet or even communicate with people about it? They can fuck right off, I'd rather buy from a scalper than them at this point if I ever have a desire for their games.

Anyway, in for standard Undertale.

Alright, who here asked for this? Please step forward for your more than needed ass beating. LOL
Me: "Hey SRG! Fix your damn website"
SRG: "How about we release a physical version of an online only game?"
Me: "Good work. Can't order it. Don't want it."
SRG: "You spoke. We listened"

Just making sure, the Undertale LE boxes are identical between Vita and PS4?  I wanted to order one LE on Vita and PS4 SE, but accidentally ordered LE of both.  I'm canceling one, but just wanted to check that the box itself is uniform.  That appears to be the case to me at least...

I believe we'll also have 1,000 copies of Absolver for Limited Run Games. AFAIK it will just be the game itself. Our variant of Shadow Warrior 2 is pretty slick.

Yeah, from what I've seen and read, that seams to be the case. I can't see any differences, and there is no specific labeling on the box, so yeah, it seems to be the same across the two platforms.

Lol. Chris I love your subtle misspellings. Quite the calling card.

We still haven't seen any US pre-orders for Axiom Verge right?

Also, any word in a physical release of Nex Machina?
I'd love to see many of the fantastic Housemarque games get physical releases, but it doesn't seem like the company is interested. Alienation did get an Asian release which I was tempted to get, but decided not to.

Nothing from any official channels, but VGP in Canada has it listed, and it shows the US ratings in the product pics for the pre-orders, so who can say for sure?
Gamefly is now showing Axiom Verge on Switch, PS4 and Vita releasing 10/17/17 along with the PS4 and Vita versions of Velocity 2X. Gamefly is not always 100% on their dates, but once something gets listed it's usually a sign that the distributor is putting it on official pre-order solicitation lists and I wouldn't be surprised if listings go live in the next week or two.

Not limited but still a really nice set. I bought the Vita one. I'm probably going to wear the pendant too [emoji14]
Agreed! I am really looking forward to this, and also plan on wearing the pendant :) I've heard such amazing things about this game, so I'm really glad that anyone that wants it will be able to get it.

Okay, which one of you assholes whose Sansborns order went through posted this on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-ESRB-Heavy-Rain-Beyond-Two-Souls-Collection-PlayStation-4-PS4/112469608888?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

And why didn't you post it here before the auction ended so I could have bid it up for you?
Not an asshole... But that was my listing. I didn't get it from Sanborns tho. I have other extra copies. I'm just not sure if self promoting my listings was ok in this forum.

Placeholders for Axiom Verge for PS4 and Vita (in both standard and the LE) are up on Amazon as are the placeholders for Velocity 2X in both PS4 and Vita. At least these aren't Gamestop exclusives like Sexy Brutale.

Lol I knew it had to be someone here.

I think word is getting out that the NTSC Beyond Two Souls/Heavy Rain is going for a premium 50-70 bucks as opposed to the Euro version... there hasn't been any sold on eBay for the past six months until that auction and then another one from a reseller shop went up BIN pretty quick a couple days later.

Hopefully word gets out more so more people start posting so I can get one.
