The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

At this time no. They are thinking about it though, saying to subscribe for future news regarding that. lol
Yeah, I'm already signed up, as I just saw the email announcing the PS4 game in my inbox. If their thinking about it, I'm sure it's only a matter of when Vs. if.

I may grab this, as I'm sure it will go fast, and Vblank normally doesn't have limits I believe, so it's a free for all on qty's. I'm for sure all in, when the Vita version may happen.

Guacamelee is a fantastic game. I really enjoyed playing it.

I have the Platinum on Vita.

I personally think this it too late of a release for me. For others this is a great release.
I have it for free on Xbox One with GWG and PS4 with Plus. I also have it on Wii U from a Nindies humble bundle.

Now if they decided to release the Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship Edition on Vita I would be all over it.

Let's make that happen! A Vita physcial release of Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship Edition would be amazing.

There are no reprints planned.
Yeah, "planned" isn't the same as "never", so I wouldn't put much stock in that. But I would for sure recommend anyone on the fence for this, get it now, as I've seen the butt hurt here many times over the price and the shipping in the past. Only to turn in to regret when these are going for $60+ in the future.

Yeah, I was going to grab a few copies of this for future flipping, but I think I'll just pass for now. Maybe if it's still up in a few days, I'll revisit the possibilities. With LRG lately, I'm just way over my budget, and can't justify really buying this, especially not for actual use, as flipping can take awhile in regards to getting a decent price.

I'm for sure hoping a Vita version will happen, as that's a 110% buy.

Guacamelee is a better game than 90% of LRG titles. We should support good games.
Man, don't try to start drama over LRG here. It's apples and oranges attempting to hold LRG up beside VBlank. I'm pretty sure this is the only physical release that VBlank has ever put out from a developer that isn't VBlank. Comparing them to a company who primarily publishes other developers' work isn't fair. Of course there's going to be a disparity in average critical appraisal. VBlank has only had two real physical releases.

That said, I do agree that Guacamelee is a very good game, and deserves to be supported. It didn't take me very long to put in my order. I have multiple digital copies of Guacamelee, and have already played through the entirety of the game. This does not deter me, it is a truly deserving game that I hold in very high esteem. It has earned a place in my physical collection.

You know it's always the usual suspects.

As stated Guacamelee is an excellent title, and LRG has offered many games I like just as much.

Even if they are selling "garbage", as many here would have us believe, I would become a garbage man tomorrow if I could sell the same qty's they do, so haters gonna hate. That's their job, and that's what they do best. So please proceed, as I don't want to keep anyone here from their day job. LOL

Where were you able to see that statistic?
Go to the product page. Hit F12 or Ctrl + Shift + C. In the search box type in "inventory". And look for the string with "inventory_quantity". And that is the exact remaining stock. If you don't see the box at the bottom pop up when you hit F12, look closer and pull it up from the bottom on the screen. On lower res it might be mostly cut off.

I'm surprised you even thought to search source/files for inventory numbers. Is there any reason why they'd deliver that information to the client?

Is the vita version of Guacamelee hard to find? And how well does it run on the vita? Debating on a PS4 copy if I can find a vita copy.
As stated, only the PS4 version is being offered currently, with no set Vita release planned. If they offered a PS4 version, I really can't see why they wouldn't offer it for the Vita. They could even do a smaller run if they want to, but I think the qty's of the PS4 would move for the Vita as well. It may take a little longer, but nothing they need to worry about.

I'm sure a lot of these publishers look at the installed base of the PS4, and see that as a more viable option, but when doing runs this small, there is little to no risk involved. I'm sure DrinkBox looks at the digital purchases as well to make an informed decision, but not have a Vita version when it's easy to see how well really good physical games sell there(and many that are not so good), seems really clueless if it doesn't happen at some point.

And even the creator of RCR only ever offered one system option at a time, maybe to make sure one sold through, before putting up the other. Or maybe it had to do with shipping, and handling large orders for distro. Either way, to not do a Vita version at some point, is insane, especially with the low risk involved.

Got my order in for Guacamelee and told several others about it, most of whom purchased it as well. This thing really just came out of nowhere but I want to see it sell well and I want them to be encouraged to publish more drinkbox titles. Loved Guacamelee on PS3 and more than willing to play through it again on PS4.

Does anyone find it odd that Play Asia is pushing this 5% off deal if you use a credit card? I always use PayPal on the site and personally wouldn't feel comfortable giving them my CC info. Just seems a bit strange that they are trying to encourage people to use credit cards on their website.

right; im already skeptical of websites I dont typically buy from.

Raiden V is now available for preorder at gamestop, so it's probably not going to be amazon exclusive & might pop up at best buy ect....

That's not drama it's a fact. The only part I may be wrong on is the 90%. Probably more like 95% honestly. I'm not sure why all the moms basement illuminati need to make that an attack on the company.

I do like that we can admit we don't buy things for the quality of the product however. That's a good start.

To be fair Guacamelee is a really great game so it just makes the comparison all the more harsh.

Not sure if posted yet but Limbo / Inside PS4 combo pack now showing a preorder price of $21.05 on Amazon. Does not seem to stack with 20% preorder bonus though. Wonder why they'd go down so low right off the bat. Maybe preorders for this were below expected.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072BL9MBY?psc=1
No, they're just matching Walmart's price like always: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Inside-Limbo-Double-Pack-PS4/55795351

Now as to why Walmart has the price that low... :whistle2:k

man hope it ships soon; is it typically a slow process? I know the LRG games I bought last week arent due till mid september i was hoping Guac shipped a bit quicker then this since it seemed to be "in stock".

Guac is probably going to come down to where you are in the line, as they seem to be shipping, but 3000+ items is going to take some time.

Just got my copy of Shadow Warrior 2... I initially thought the burlap sack was a nice touch but after seeing fucking burlap fibers everywhere, I'm not as big a fan anymore.

What's the rush? You can't open it anyway, just play the digital version. I already owned it digitally but bought the physical as well, great game. Also from what I understand, there is no manual, so the only thing to see when opened is the disc art.
