The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

Darn, it doesn't look like the Japanese version got its own trophy list, just the European verison. Thanks for the heads-up, though.

EDIT: Actually, now I'm not sure if it comes with a separate list. I'll have to do some more digging.
is HLD heavy on text? Still haven't played it

Thanks, ordered from play Asia since its confirmed English menus.

I completely missed the memo that Silver Case is getting a physical ps4 release from NIS

Did this fly under the radar? Physical release of Hyper Light Drifter for PlayStation 4 up on Play-Asia: http://www.play-asia.com/hyper-light-drifter/13/70ayy3
Nope amazon jp has a limited edition for ps4 saw it 2 weeks ago to much paper for it though.

Iam8bit is doing a Hyper Light Drifter release stateside, the package looks nice, but after doing Rez Infinite from them, I can't justify dealing with that company again. Maybe they'll at least print the foil cover rightside up this time.

I loved Hyper Light Drifter and would rather have that than any of the LRG titles this week personally. The JP set has a really nice cover art though.

I went ahead and ordered the Hyper Light Drifter physical copy from IAm8Bit. I'll post an assessment of the package when it arrives, if anyone is on the fence about ordering it. They are supposedly printing 9000 copies, and after the Rez Infinite debacle, it might be a little while before those sell out.

I wanted HLD, but after they cancelled the Vita version, I said  fuck it. Once I get a PS4, I'll try it on sale at some point.

I was gonna hold off as well... not just Rez but also NMS CE... but that set actually looks pretty dope and I'm assuming this time, they actually have them on hand before they start selling copies.

Glad to see Iam8bit charging $4 for shipping on this new game instead of their insane $15 like last time.

Might have to give them another chance since I've always wanted to play this game.

Got HLD from iam8bit. Cheaper than Play Asia plus I like the cover art better on the iam8bit version. I wasn't too upset about the Rez issue once they tried to make good on the cover mix up. Hopefully nothing goes wrong with HLD.

As far as I can tell, they've only sold 2,500 of the 9,000 in a day. They will last a while so I'm going to hold out for a discount (they discounted Rez Infinite a week or two ago). Looks nice though!

I skipped Rez, mainly because I hated the sh*tty cover they produced for the game. But I will definitely order HLD, looks like they did a much better job on the package.

Anyone have any idea where to buy the Singapore version of "I am Setsuna" for the Switch online?  Looking for that sweet English coverart

Heavy Arm U - ordering through them is a bit odd (it's all done via e-mail), but they are fantastic. I've ordered dozens of times from them and have yet to have a single issue. They are a physical store in Hong Kong but have been doing more and more for the US import scene.

Check them out on Twitter to stay in the loop on what they have available when - https://twitter.com/HeavyArm_Store

Thank you! They're reliable? I'm just very cautious about any place located in HK

I've ordered from them three or four times, never had any issues. As someone else mentioned, putting an order in is a bit awkward (have to email, then pay a PayPal invoice), but they're legit and their customer service people are very nice. The cheaper shipping option ($10 IIRC) is a bubble mailer and has comparable transit times to Play-Asia.

Great, thanks!

I've used Heavy Arm 8-10 times in the last year and never had an issue. Like someone else said, the cheaper shipping is $10 and covers up to 5 games. It can take 3-4 weeks from ordering to arrival. Orders are done through email, but they're usually quick to respond.

To those that have ordered from Heavyarm, how long should I wait before contacting them? My Malaysia Airmail tracking says "dispatched out Los Angeles" on 3/21 but that was over two weeks ago now? Is this normal or should I be worried?

Does it show it was in LA for a length of time, and then dispatched out? LA is where Asia mail gets customs clearance, so if it is there, that can take any length of time from 1 day, to weeks, depending on the clearance process.

If it was there a few days, and got clearance and then left, yes you should contact them, as once it clears, then it is in the regular US mail stream and should arrive within 7-10 days depending on your location within the country.

This is what I am seeing on the tracking. I think it was dispatched from Malaysia to LA on 3/21 so I'm probably overreacting. I cheaped out on the shipping so once it's in the hands of USPS I'm SOL with tracking info.

Just to chime in, I've ordered several times from them and never had an issue. I've done the cheaper and more expensive shipping and I think going forward I will probably use the more expensive shipping just for the added visibility.

Yeah, that looks like it was shipped to LA, but doesn't appear to have arrived there yet. Once it does, then you'll see it there for a time, and once it leaves, then you should get it within a week or so(or maybe a few days depending on your location). My average international shipping times from the UK and Asia are always about 10-14 days from start to finish.

It is not in LA It was dispatched out TO LA.

Heavy Arm usually don't ship out till Friday. So if you ordered on a Monday, they won't ship it out till Friday. That is when you should start counting the days it takes to get to you.

On average for me, it takes about 2 weeks and a few days.

Oh, that's right... they are in Malaysia, not Hong Kong.  My bad.  I just had another package from them show up last night.  They have 100% replaced Play-Asia as my import go-to.  I really only hit up PA now for things HeavyArm isn't getting in for whatever reason.

Great! Thanks for the input everybody. I'm not impatient, just overly worrisome
When it comes to international shipping, any and everything can and will happen. It's good to keep an eye on things just for piece of mind, and if and when something doesn't look right or make sense, "knowing is half the battle". LOL

Hmmm, still no shipping notice for Hyper Light Drifter from iam8bit, and I ordered the first day it was available.

I know this is mainly a collector's thread, but has anyone discovered a favorite hidden gem from the obscure or lesser-printed games of the current PS4/Xbox 1 generation?  My favorite hidden gem so far this gen is a Rising Star Games release, Earth's Dawn on PS4.  It's basically an Odin's Sphere clone with Gears of War aesthetics - a 2D side-scroller where you battle enemies with guns and swords and upgrade your skills as you progress.  I realize that nearly every physical release is available via download too these days, but some of my favorite games of the PS1 era were those titles that you found in a store for $10 or less that no one else had heard of such as Crossroad Crisis and Tall Infinity.  Does anyone actually play any of these games?
