The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Damn! The eBay prices for Lost Sphear are already getting nutty. I ordered 3 for each console to guarantee a mint copy and a box, so I guess I get to go make a wee bit of profit now. I was just going to return the extras, but this is good, too. Haha

Just a heads up The Binding of Issac Afterbirth+ got one final shipment sent out to stores and after that it's being discontinued physically so if you want one better get one now.

Does that specifically refer to the Switch version, PS4 version or both?

I'm confused... it's still in stock at the Squeenix store.

Want to make a few bucks or trade? I sent you a PM.

I’ve noticed since I bought a Switch, I really only care about collecting physical releases for that now. I mean; I just received my copy of Edith Finch for PS4 but that is one I’ve been waiting for and hadn’t purchased before. Now; I’ll only buy PS4 or Xbox physical for really special games, along with the big title releases of course. I’m finding myself going for Switch for a lot of Indie games that are on all three consoles as well. I don’t know; just something about those cute little Switch cases, I suppose.

I’m weird.
I guess I'm the opposite. I plan to keep my Switch collection primarily Nintendo 1st party or exclusives and get most everything else on PS4.

So far I've been the same too.  There are a few games I wonder if I should get on the switch instead for portability, but so far each time I have gone with PS4, and have been happy with my choice.

Same. Nintendo has some great exclusives, but if given a choice I'd rather play on PS4/Vita. Better all-around ecosystem IMO.

That’s how I am for Xbox. I only buy the exclusives, and everything else is played on PS4.

But I’m starting to notice a lot of Indies coming to all three systems, and a lot of games I find myself going, “Ooh. this would be perfect for the Switch!” Thus my decision is made.

I don’t really care for trophies anymore; unless they’re easily obtainable. It can become quite stressful. It’s nice not having to worry about them anymore. I can just focus on enjoying the game.

I don’t know; I guess I just like the portability aspect of it. Even though I don’t go anywhere, the potential to play the games anywhere is awesome.

Some of these Switch games come with manuals and goodies and it just brings me back to a better time.

Guess I’m alone on this one :\

I'm glad that I managed to roll my pathetic, hungover ass over to grab my phone and get my 99 Vidas orders in yesterday. Those went way, way quicker than I was expecting them to.

Not sure what the print size was for the PS4 version of Dungeons 3, but resellers are going a little crazy with it at Amazon after it sold out a week or so ago.  Cheapeast price listed is $173.34 and that's just for a used copy.

It really isn't that hard to find at other retailers too.  Gamestop currently has it on sale for $19.99 and even Best Buy has it (for $49.99).  I ended up price matching it at Best Buy through chat.

Has anyone imported Voez for the Switch? PA lists a multi language Asian version and a Japanese version. I'd rather get the Japanese one, but that one doesn't specify language--possibly just meaning that it's Japanese only. I was hoping someone could confirm one way or the other?

Dunno.  My first reaction was "eww, gross" to the price.  But then I saw that it has both DLC which sell for $9.99 and $3.99 respectively on Steam.   So it's cool that they are offering a complete edition imo.

I followed your example, but the Best Buy PM chat took over 30 minutes. Jebus.

That was his point, though. Print numbers are an objective fact--opinions and what people think doesn't change anything lol.
Just wanted to interject here and note that the only way we are getting print numbers is from the companies telling us how many copies they actually print. If the print numbers were supplied by Sony, the manufacturer, it would be easy to believe that what the companies selling the games are saying is true. As is, the information isn't objective fact. It's entirely possible they did 2000 copies of 99 vidas or that there are 2500 copies of Breach & Clear on the vita, but all we have is the opinion that the companies are telling the truth.

It's actually in a companies better interest to say a game is more limited than it really is. Heck there are many limited edition games that are actually super common. Though I haven't seen the real numbers, it's understood by collectors for the original Xbox that the limited edition of Halo 2 is actually more common than the regular basic version... and the market price for a while (haven't checked lately) actually supported that claim.

I see where you're coming from. I'm just not really willing to go down the rabbit hole of not believing given information. If a limited print company makes a statement that X copies exist, then X copies exist. It's just far more simple and digestible that way. I know that there are situations where some additional copies are made without numbers, with a hole punched through the UPC, etc, but that seems to be the exception to the rule, and I believe it's only SRG that's done that. And, honestly, I don't exactly trust that company anyway, so any statements on print run from them would subject to more scrutiny.

You must have missed the part where I said I don’t care.

You believe what you want, and I’ll believe what I want.

Amazon pulled all the people trying to sell it, just noticed it.

How in the world do you do a customer service chat with best buy? I always have to call them, and I just hate it so much. lol
You won't enjoy the chat much more. I can always get to the chat from the page linked to below. There is a "Help" icon on the right side of the screen and you should see a "Chat with an Expert" option once you click on it.

Again, I do not care.

Not sure how I could possibly be more clear on that.
Others do care however, because you are spreading erroneous information. Your belief that something is rarer than something else without any supporting facts is pure ignorance. You are free to be ignorant, but the rest of us are free to believe that you are a moron and disregard everything you say going forward.

Muv Luv, Arnosurge, 99Vidas, Breach and Clear, and Retro City Rampage will probably be one of the rarest for the Vita.

In terms of NA releases, Muv Luv might be the rarest due to being Kickstarter exclusive. But the rest are up there, the exception being 99Vidas since it is an EU release.

Let me tell you about how much I don't care about the topics being discussed. That is some level 99 threadcrapping right there.
