The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

Not impressed with HCGs lineup
I'm not impressed with most of the limited print physical companies any more, the couple genuinely good games that come out are drowned in all the random cash grabs that they all shill out for collection obsessed buyers

Me too. They have been killing it for the most part. Probably the highest percentage of games I've been interested in of any of the limited run companies. They are doing a great job IMO.

It wasn't that impressive at any point since the majority of games were like $1 to $5 at some point digitally or free on PS+. In many ways they ruined VIta collecting. The physical vita library used to be very close to the legendary Dreamcast in number of titles and quality vs tripe. Now it's more than 2x the size and the ratio for quality titles is a fraction of what it was. Not that everyone should be going for complete sets, but it was a palatable idea before with the library so small but so filled with good games.

Those of you who've dealt with SLG what's their shipping like? I got a DHL number that shows no movement or even acceptance, but it's all in German.

Is it one of those that's just gonna randomly hit the box without ever tracking?

The tracking number will show movement eventually, but like most of the limited game companies they print the label in advance of actually shipping it. If you're talking about an R-Type order, I got tracking a few days ago and it's also not been accepted or scanned anywhere as best I can tell.

I don't know if this will be the case for you, but since DHL doesn't operate in my area the tracking eventually shows up on USPS. Might be worth checking the tracking there as well.

You'll get it faster than LRG!

Not exactly. They are putting up 150 bundles of the next three games and 150 bundles of the first release plus the next three on the 2nd. Neither bundle will ship until late 2019. The idea is to help with the expensive international shipping charges. They aren't preventing non-international customers from buying the bundles, but there will be 1200 copies of each game put up for sale as they are received in stock and there isn't a lot of financial incentive to buy the bundles for US customers given how slowly their first release has sold.
I don't think it matters how slowly their first release has sold, I don't see Hard Copy Games lowering the price of it or any of their future releases due to the low print run (1500 copies) and the fact that they would be taking a financial hit. That said, the bundle would definitely benefit US customers who want to save on shipping (as long as they plan on getting all their games and don't mind waiting until the end of the year to receive them all).

Well, we don't really know for sure. Red Art Games has done regular sales to move stock and there is no reason to think Hard Copy won't as well given that they are not even based in the US, but have a fulfillment partner that ships their stock out of the US. Leaving that aside, shipping for the three games will likely be $10 which is what is costs to ship three games from them within the US now, so you're only going to save $6.50 total over buying each game separately and having it shipped when it's released. Add to that the risk of waiting for maybe eight months until everything ships and it doesn't exactly seem like a good value like Super Rare's bundles that ship every few months seem to be.

I guess for me it matters what the bundle shipping price will be. I assumed they would charge $5 - $6 for 3 PS4 games, like LRG does. But if they charge $10 to ship 3 games, then yeah its not a huge difference.

Looks like they are doing a shipping discount on the three, so the bundle works out to about $6.50 in shipping versus $16.50 separately.

Saving about $10 was good enough for me so I decided to order the bundle and will wait it out until the end of the year.

Does anyone know if the physical Switch version of N.E.R.O. (and the PS4 rerelease) got officially canceled or something? Best Buy sent me a cancellation email on Thursday afternoon for the game (and removed the listing from their site), then I checked Amazon and it was no longer listed there too. Finally, I decided to check Bull Moose (where I know it had been listed a few days ago) and it now says "Canceled" next to the games and they are no longer taking orders. I haven't seen anything official from Soedesco so I was wondering if anyone has any news on it?

I know they were reprinting it, not sure what happened.

I've beaten Tokyo School Life. It's an EVN and a decent one, but honestly it's just OK. Pretty much if I remember you're a transfer student and 3 girls try to help you in your stay in Tokyo and you find love and such. It's short and playable, but so many VNs are better.

Did rtype PS4 ship yet? Or better yet, has anyone received theirs? I recall srrictly limited saying something about 3 weeks from order date. I originally ordered back in Feb

They sent out a email stating late April for the PS4 version and middle May for Switch, haven’t heard anything since. Still waiting for Velocity Switch too.

The standard editions of the PS4 version have started to ship as I've seen some people in one of my Facebook groups post photos.

Got my shipping confirmation on April 25th and it says it's at NY customs as of today. Fwiw it had zero updates until it hit NY.

I live in upstate so I'd expect it before Friday. I'll do an unboxing video as I usually do for these.

Anyone order the mini-figures from Vblank? $10 for these seem like a waste... I knew they'd be small but the quality is def not that great.

Yeah, I'm normally into unique items like that offered with new releases, but those looked butt ugly on the site, so they where an easy pass for me.

I was ready to pull the trigger and then got hit with shipping. Holy crap. Almost $30 for shipping! The collector's edition was already expensive for what was in it, but well over $100, landed. It's a pass.

What time do games go on sale when PlayAsia put up their limited games? I want to get FurWind, which goes on sale today, but cant find any info on the time...???? (I’m EST)
Thanks!!
I had the same question and according to their Twitter it is at 11 AM EST
Thanks for the info. I literally ask this every time they have a release. Can never remember and they never post times on their site or pictures. Makes no sense. Thanks again
What time does PlayAsia open up sales for the two Vita games today? EST here, thanks!!

Just wanted to add that they only hyped Runner 3 for the PS4 in the e-mail, but there are three other PS4 games listed that are so far exclusive to their store, Remilore, Crystal Crisis and The End is Nigh.
Thanks for letting me know RemiLore for PS4 was there, definitely getting one.

That is true, but none of them are being advertised as limited quantities so they likely will stay in stock for a long time. Perhaps even long enough to last until a Black Friday sale, if they end up doing one.

I will likely save the 15% off code for their Vita releases, which hopefully will be listed all at once. Those will be limited quantities of course since they have no ability to reprint.

Hadn't heard of First Press Games until today. They seem focused on Switch but apparently they'll do PS4 too.

This tease should be pretty clear clues but I am not familiar with Switch games.
