The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

Wasn't paying attention.. had to buy the collectors edition of Shakedown Hawaii once I noticed the standard was gone. Have the collector's of Retro City Rampage switch so eh why nots

Did vBlank say the standard sold out..? There's stated quantity production on the standard from what I see so unless some retailer bought 5,000 copies, don't see how they sold out.

EDIT* Nevermind, they did say it sold out on Twitter... but they might make more. This seems like some kind of a poly honestly...

The whole thing was weird.... I feel bad that I fell for it and ordered that "collector's edition". Like someone else said, this seems to have been all about getting rid of those crappy looking mini figures.

Did anyone get any e-mail confirmation after ordering? I have yet to receive anything.

I thought I read it was going to be an open preorder. Dang! Would have picked one up to try and trade for the Vita version. Oh well. Money saved I guess.

i aint paying extra $15 bucks for that garbage. i'll wait for them to restock.
You may be waiting a while. I have a hunch they will only restock the standard once the CE sells out and it seems a lot of people are pissed off and don't want to buy the CE just to get the game. I loved VBlank before this but its an all around shitty move to never advertise the standard as limited in any way (making many think it was an open preorder or at least with more copies than the CE) but then have so little that the standard sold out in mere minutes. A little heads up to the loyal fans would have been nice - "Hey by the way we only have 1000 copies of the standard so be on there right away at 10am PT."

Not to mention, who puts way more CE copies out there, than standards? Shady.

It is shady and I feel bad now for giving in anyway (I need to see if I actually was charged since I still have yet to receive any kind of confirmation I ordered). Not to mention what they are calling a "CE" - what I'm sure will be a crappy outer box and that little ridiculous figure that they sell on it's own for $10.

The CE stands for crappy extras

Videogames New York has entered the limited games publishing market. Their first title is Gigantic Army for the Switch set to ship in November, but orders are open now.

FYI, this is not an ESRB-rated game for those that care.

From their website:

The production of the units are form the EU region and will have a cover variant and numbering system only for the import market in the North American Region. The EU and ASIA markets units will each have their own cover and their own set of numbering. This game is ALL REGION and will play on all Nintendo Switch system worldwide. No special accounts or hacks required. Just insert the cartridge and play.
Glad I can skip this one.

Yes. I got my copy and confirmed they charged. $19.99 plus tax.
I can't believe I didn't bother to order it. I must have thought that was the normal price and was waiting for Best Buy to throw it up. I wonder if this is going to be like Aegis Defenders and be something stores get 1-3 copies of while it never shows up on BestBuy.com.

Got my songbird switch today. Looked for aggelos and it's GONE everywhere. Ordered a ps4 one before thats gone too.
Wow. It's even gone at my go-to UK store. That's super weird. I've always bought PQube stuff right at launch (or pre-order) so I have no idea if they have a history of printing more copies or not.

I think what happened with Aggelos on the Switch is for the longest time PQube was saying there was going to be an ESRB release, and then abruptly recently said sorry, its not happening, which left American physical collectors scrambling for import copies.

My Friend Pedro (Switch) is up for preorder at BB for $29.99, with an 11/12 release date.  Special Reserve Games is also supposed to be releasing their version, I'm guessing at $34.99.  I really need to decide between $23.99 at BB (with GCU) for the lesser version of $34.99 plus shipping at SRG for the (assuming) better version.

Yup, I recommend amazon UK if you want a physical Aggelos copy. Play Asia had it on backorder so I canceled mine

Cat quest was really scarce for a few weeks and selling for stupid prices when it was ps4 exclusive. They reprinted. But yeah, this is pal so I'm not sure what they'll decide to do. I'm sure it was a lot of unprecedented international sales that cleaned them out.

I just went with the ps4 one to be safe. Bought on eBay from same seller as my songbird. It arrived in a week and aggelos was only 20 shipped anyway.

When are GRIS and Metal Wolf Chaos shipping? I could have sworn they were supposed to ship in September but I might not be remembering correctly.

Not sure if this was mentioned, the mech game Gigantic Army has gotten a limited Switch release. There’s 3,000 copies of a European variant, Play Asia is distributing the 1,500 Asian variants, and there’s a North American variant distributed by these guys (And VGP)

For those that didn't know, all versions of the game cartridge are the EU version, only the cover art is different for each region.

The Toki Retrocollector Edition is down to $9.97 at Gamestop.  Not a terrible price for all you are getting in the package.  I got it when it was $29.97 and was satisfied.

Thank you! Went to a nearby GameStop that showed it in stock and grabbed it. It was a gutted copy but came complete with everything. What a great deal! Appreciate the heads up as I had no idea this collectors edition had all these extras. I was thinking it was just a game and came out very pleasantly surprised.

Thanks for the toki heads up! I had it when it released and returned it because I found out it was so short. I went and bought back the same copy I returned 6 months ago for 10 bucks lol!

I think it's sold out now, and I'm pretty sure it's an awful game, but I got a copy of the Dollhouse game by Soedesco off Gamefly for $10 yesterday. I've only seen it available to buy online, none of my Gamestops ordered copies so I'm not sure how large the print run was.

Kind of the same story with Omen of Sorrow, another Soedesco game that I basically never ever see except for online. I haven't bought that one yet, still waiting for a discounted price.

I played the beta and thought it was interesting, I think it's very much dependent on if you like the style of game or not

Omen of Sorrow is $19.97 in store at Gamestop if one of your local stores has it in stock.
