Indie Royale bundles employ a variable pricing model and last about a week. Most start at $3.99 and the price goes up as people pay the minimum, stays the same as people pay slightly above it, and drops with larger purchases. Games are almost all available on the service Desura, which is the company involved in these bundles, with Steam keys and direct downloads available when possible. A bonus album is also available in each bundle for those who pay above a higher minimum.

I've been keeping my eye on Nimbus for awhile I was waiting for it to go on sale, I didn't expect it would be like this. I'm in for the bundle, both ARES and Sanctum look interesting as well and the best part is that they all activate on Steam

Update on the Gemini Rue Steam keys from @indieroyale:

Good news: Dave from @WadjetEyeGames will provide Gemini Rue Steam keys to all Indie Royale buyers after the bundle has ended. Sorry for the confusion about this - the coincidental timing of Gemini Rue on Steam and the bundle launch caught both of us by surprise.

Unfortunately it looks like we'll have to wait a few days. I can't complain though as it's still much earlier than I'd have gotten it waiting for a Steam sale.

So now that they're at 17,000+ sold, how are they going to be delivering the Sanctum DLC? Hope they start with Killing Floor and Penetrator since I have the others free from the IGN Prime trial.

I just activated the games on Steam. I had hoped Gemini Rue was on Steam, but oh well.

Just a note, but if you sign up for IGN Prime, you can get the three Sanctum DLC packs for free. Just redeemed those as well. And no, I didn't bother looking to see if that was mentioned before.

You'll get your Steam code when the bundle is over and done.

Wow, I'm really excited for this concept! I have been looking at Gemini Rue and Sanctum for a while now. Those two games would have sold me alone - the others are just a bonus for me!

They've just changed the terms for the Sanctum DLC. It's no longer every 10,000 sales. Next DLC drops when we reach 70,000 bundles sold. Here's the quote from the page.

BONUS DLC OFFER: 20,000 sales! To say thanks, two DLC packs for Sanctum are due to appear on your key page in 24hours. When 70,000 bundles in total have been sold, a third DLC for Sanctum will be released!

So I guess we're only getting 2 DLC. No way we're hitting 70,000 sales.

Seems kind of underhanded, but I suppose the only way they could get the Sanctum guys on board was the idea of them recouping a lot of the lost money on DLC.
You guys will really complain about anything.
It's not like they shit in my coffee or anything, but when you say one thing and do another, it doesn't seem right.

Well, I think this is a pretty great deal. Besides if you guys are so revved-up about Sanctum DLC, just get the IGN Prime free trial and you'll get Steam codes for all three DLC packs.

Meanwhile, these are some pretty interesting games for just south of cheap.
This kind of thing tends to make up for tiny price-tags with massive volume, from what I understand.

Threw in $3. A total steal for Gemini Rue and possibly some Sanctum DLC. The rest is gravy.
This is correct. Look at it this way: each of the Humble Bundles made over $1,000,000, if I'm not mistaken. If four indie devs participated and there was also a charity, that's about $200,000 for each participating entity (of course the percentages vary depending on the number of participants and the way that users chose to distribute their payments), but the point of this really is that sales in general work by appealing to people who would not purchase your product under normal circumstances (i.e., at the regular price point); by lowering the price on a temporary basis, you tap a group of potential customers who simply wouldn't exist under other circumstances. The volume of sales compensates for the reduced per-unit price charged to "regular" customers.

This is similar to the argument against the notion of counting pirated games as lost sales. Even at a lower-than-usual price, most people who pirate games simply aren't going to pay for them, period. Therefore, companies like Ubisoft (and many others) who try to suggest that piracy actually costs them $x because of lost sales are making a false analogy. Pirates who can't get your game through illegitimate means are going to move on to some other game (and realistically there is no such thing as an "uncrackable" DRM) rather than pony up money to play yours.

The similarity between these points is that in both cases you're looking at a group of people who are not customers and are not likely to be customers under normal circumstances; the similarity ends where you recognize that one of these groups can be converted to customers given the appropriate incentives.

So I have to jump on quickly or the price will go up? hmmm... I think I like the humble bundle model better. Somehow I'm more compelled to spend higher amounts when I can feel superior by "beating the average" and supporting devs and charity at slider amounts I set. Here, I just feel like I'm forced to give devs more money because I'm too slow and there are a lot of cheap bastards out there :p

@$5, you're still getting Gemini Rue at a discount. The other games are just gravy at that point! XD

Nimbus is super fun, too. I got Sanctum in a Steam sale... but I'll let you know what that's like whenever I actually play it... derp.

PS: I like my Indie Royale w/ Cheese...

Not exactly... you can pay the "buy now" price, but then the price begins to go up for everyone else. If someone pays more then the price goes down. I bit on the deal last night and actually saw the price drop a little while later... so it works both ways.

Any way you look at it though, it's a tremendous deal.

Right. Models like the Humble Indie Bundle, and now this, are reacting to all sorts of counter-intuitive truths about sales: You generally make more by charging less, anti-piracy measures have no effect on piracy rates (but do make legitimate customers think twice about buying your game), and so on.

Some people will always pirate all games always, and some people will always pay full price (whatever that happens to be) on release day. But that leaves a whole lot of customers and potential customers who are open to experimental pricing and distribution models.
The similarity between these points is that in both cases you're looking at a group of people who are not customers and are not likely to be customers under normal circumstances; the similarity ends where you recognize that one of these groups can be converted to customers given the appropriate incentives.
This is how they get me with these bundles. With the exception of Gemini Rue, there was nothing in this bundle that I would have likely purchased. Most HIBs are similar in that I'm only interested in maybe one or two games, if that. I get so many free and cheap games that are really good these days that I don't even bother with demos. My gaming time is already maxed out so I'd rather stick to the full experiences that I have and it seems silly to look for games to buy that are just going to pile up.

However, when they're in a bundle like this and I can throw a few dollars at charity, or in this case get that one game I wanted and have a few others as well, it's worth it. I will likely never play all of these bundled games, but I didn't just throw my money into a hole. I win, the devs who wouldn't have gotten any of my money otherwise win, and in the case of the HIB, charitable causes win.

ares was enjoyable to play, I've had sanctum for months, but haven't played it.
nimbus and gemini rue look good enough to me to spend $5.35

been waiting on a deal for ARES for a while. That alone makes this deal worth it. I already have Sanctum, so I guess I'll be trading my key for that.
Any way you look at it though, it's a tremendous deal.
Yeah totally agreed here. I spent $10 on Sanctum alone through Steam and feel like I got a great deal.

It's interesting to see how these different sales models work - I love indie devs for trying things like this... I guess I just feel better about the way Humble works. I'm always compelled to give them about twice what the average is. Not so much here. No offense, but lowering other gamers' costs just isn't as compelling a reason to give more as supporting a charity or the devs. I know we're obviously still supporting devs by paying more than the base amount through the Indie Royal model as well, but it feels overshadowed.

Just food for the organizer's thought... in case they are a CAG and care to hear it :)

Cool, nimbus and Gemini Rue were 2 games I was interested in but was waiting for a sale on. Getting them both for $5.30 sounds good to me. Plus I get Sanctum DLC and that A.R.E.S. game as a bonus.

This is a great idea! Yeah, it's not as cool as the Humble Bundle with the charity benefits, but this is still helping out the indie devs! I payed around $5.50 and I figure that I would've gladly spent that on Gemini Rue alone! The other 3 games look entertaining so that's even better!

Personally I love the way these indie packs work. I mean most of the time I would never buy individual indie games for like the price they ask for when it's on sale at Steam. Just because I don't know enough about them, but throw 4-5 of them in a pack like these bundles and it becomes a what the hell type of buy for $5 (although I give more to the humble bundles for charity purposes).

Are these packs divisible? I am only interested in ARES, but not for the current $5+. Id be interested in throwing a dollar or two to anyone willing to split with me.

Thanks to those who PMed me. I think I have a deal worked out, but those with unused codes or looking for partners may want to use the Steam trading thread to find matches.

Well, if all you care about is the steam or desura codes, it would be pretty easy to split them up. Each game has it's own set of codes (as well as direct downloads).

That's actually a pretty good idea. I've already bought a bundle, so I'm not interested in going in on it with you, but I'm sure that you could find somebody here who is interested.

I picked it up for 5.33. I should have picked it up earlier but wasn't sure the games were worth it. The folks here seem to think so. So I figured I'd pick it up and support the idea of cheap games.

Given the timing on the Twitter updates, I don't expect to see the DLC codes until tomorrow. Before then would be nice, but I wouldn't start wondering where they are just yet.

You're probably right. We wont get them until tomorrow.

I was just getting uneasy about the possibility that they'd somehow incorporate the DLC into the code that they give for the main game. I know they said that they weren't gonna do that. They said that they'd provide separate codes for the DLC. But they also said that we'd be getting new DLC every 10,000 bundles sold. I accept that that was an honest mistake on their part, but where one mistake is made, another could also be made.

The reason that I care if the DLC is available through separate codes is because I already bought the game during the summer sale and I intend to gift my copy of Sanctum to a friend. If it was necessary to use the code for the base game to get the DLC... well obviously, that would mean that I'll have no base game code to give to my friend.

Just bought a bundle too. When I redeemed the Steam code for A.R.E.S. it showed up as Torchlight Retail on Steam. It's just....weird.

EDIT: And then it installs A.R.E.S. I'm really confused now.

I've had that happen a few times where after putting in a code it displays the name of another game.

Darn, missed it.

I already have Sanctum, but I would have paid a few bucks just for Nimbus. $6 is too much for how little I'm interested, though.
I've had that happen a few times where after putting in a code it displays the name of another game.
Maybe it was because I tried to redeem a Torchlight code earlier. I'm really glad it did install the right game though.

Yup, that's what usually does it for me. Late to a code drop, get duplicate code error, and then when I redeem a code it lists the game from the missed drop.

Me too man. Great way for me to be introduced to some titles I have not heard of, or go ahead and take the plunge on some I have been teetering on the edge with. I still prefer the Humble Bundle for their overall presentation and motivations, but I will likely be participating in these bundles as well often.

Edit - price is down to the $4.50 range right now. Pretty damn good considering it was higher yesterday morning.

Anybody have a code for the Penetrator DLC for Sanctum to trade? I'll gladly trade my Violator key or the Desura keys for it.
Anybody have a code for the Penetrator DLC for Sanctum to trade? I'll gladly trade my Violator key or the Desura keys for it.
From what I've seen on the Steam forum pages for Sanctum, the consensus is that the Penetrator DLC is the least essential of all the DLC. If you manage to get a person to trade you the code, then good for you, but I wouldn't feel too bad if you don't. It sounds like something that you could easily live without. Or at the very least, you could wait until it goes on sale.

That's what I plan to do. It'll probably be 50-75% off during the Christmas sale. I can wait until then.
