This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it was getting very close to the 5,000 thread mark, I figured it was time for a reset.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions.


Games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

Apple Game Center
Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games are starting to support this. Currently this only runs on iPod & iPhone, but an update will be coming soon that enables this for iPad users.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center Exchange Thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs. You can also exchange OpenFeint & Plus+ names there.

Important Notes:

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.

6. Apps can be re-downloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.

7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

9. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

11. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Rise of Atlantis is a very good match 3 game. Even my son, who hates puzzle games, liked it. If I had a criticism, it would be that with the various bonuses, it's a little too easy. Still, it's very polished and I sunk a ton of time into it without being bored.
 
I just want to reiterate my growling hatred for Swords and Sworcery and it is one of the few games where I absolutely cannot conceive of a metric or world view that gives it value. Even tower defense games I can see where some poor dopes might like them but Sworcery had jack diddly to redeem it.
 
Sword and Sworcery was great.

Great visuals, great sound effects, great music.

Story could have been better. And the "wait 2 weeks before you can play again" was pretentious.

To defend Sword and Sworcery it is more of visual,audio experience first and point and click adventure game second.If you don't like visuals,music or adventure games this game is not for you.
 
I love adventure games in the grotesque, anal way.

Sworcery was 90% experience, 10% adventure game and with a crummy repeated boss battle.

It didn't help that, while the scenery was cute, I spent most of my time trying to figure out what shape the protagonist's body was that did not look hideous and ape-like. That and the music did not move me.

I couldn't really get into it though I think calling it an art game is a fair assessment, and I mean that as a compliment.

I'll likely go back when I have the time to wander around and figure out it's eccentricities.

There was a way around that built into the game.

Sword and Sworcery is a great experience (and a great game, IMO). I honestly cannot conceive of an individual view that doesn't see its value.

By your standard, no game or movie can ever be called objectively bad, poor, or without merit.

A better translation would be that it fancies itself an audiovisual experience rather than a game so it didn't feel it needed to provide anything approaching quality gameplay. But it also provided nothing memorable In its audio or visuals. I wasted a lot of time poring through it for something of value but it was spectacularly mediocre, so much that every sterling review makes no sense to me. It's not a statement about the people. It's a statement about the game.

I don't have a problem with you expressing your opinion regarding a game, its when you make a statement about the people who enjoy playing games of those types. Maybe you meant it in jest which is fine but it didn't come off that way.

In regards to S&S I haven't played enough of it to determine if I like it or not. I'm interested enough to keep at it though to see what happens next.

Rise of Atlantis is a pretty fun match-3 style game with some funny shaped boards and clear-the-piece objectives. I definitely recommend it at the price of free!

That's not his standard. There are bad games, of course. But when everyone else is raving about Sword & Sworcery, you insist they must be wrong. How is it that everyone else can see the fun and merit in this game but you can't? Simple, the world needs to adjust itself to you.

Obviously everyone can have their opinion, and I'm sorry the game somehow didn't connect with you. I know that can make you feel alone in the world, but instead of insulting everyone else's taste, how about you just chalk it up to this being a game that just didn't work for you.

The Back to the Future games have all dropped to $2.99. I've got the first one from when it went free and I have never even launched it. I suppose I should at some point. Maybe now?

Last time it went free I downloaded it and got probably a third into it, and then it hit me up to buy the rest of the game. I liked it the game as a whole, but that pissed me off.

I was about to post this. I have launched the app, though the adventure genre is my least favorite...it plays like your typical adventure game, though in the BTTF universe. If you get stuck, there are hints.

Free, yes please. For $2.99 (down from $6.99) for HD, I am very tempted because I love BTTF...but I don't know if I can stomach spending the money on it.

You may not have gotten the correct one. There's a "Rise of Atlantis HD" and "Rise of Atlantis HD (Premium)", both of which are free right now. The first one says "Unlock the full adventure from within the app" in its description and has a $6.99 in-app purchase.
 
Perfect Cell is pretty fun. I go back to it every once in a while and am slowly working my way through it. I think it's worth 99 cents for sure. Especially nice on the iPad.
 
just got an ipad 2 and had wanted BTTF, so I picked up all the episodes. Good deal. Perfect Cell is fun, but I got bored of it pretty quick.
 
Big fan of Nyxquest on PC but I don't know how well the tablet version holds up. I'd almost recommend just waiting for a Steam sale on it but if an Ipad is as good as PC for you, then go for it. The game requires mouse/wiimote/touch controls in addition to platforming so an Ipad multitouch IS a natural control scheme for it.

Perfect Cell was alright for something different but I lost interest partway in. Can't really tell you too much beyond that. I'd say it's worth the cheap price.

Osmos is Osmos. I find it boring but you already know it by now and the opportunity cost is small.

Sorry, I just can't let it slide THAT easily. Tower defense are games I just don't get. This was a game expressly pitched by everyone as transcendent, art, an experience, one of the Iphone's best. These people included sold me on it.

I'm not trying to lambast the people who liked the game. I jest about TD fans but there I can accept the difference in opinion. The whole point of the hyperbole with regards to Sworcery is that I just found it THAT mediocre, THAT dull that I simply cannot fathom on ANY grounds it could be getting the acclaim it does, acclaim that led me to waste money and time on it, to boot.

I'm only pressing the issue now because I take it as a slap in the face when you imply that I am hurling out insults mindlessly to anyone who disagrees. I tend to toss a few more crass jokes than necessary in my spittle-flecked rants but I am certainly not aiming at anything but Sworcery and the acclaim it has, divorced of the people themselves recommending it.

Sorry for infesting another page of the thread with this nonsense but I just can't let that sort of insult go.
 
^^Thanks mrsamsa Ive been tempted to buy Tiger Woods at $.99 but glad I didn't. I was actually going to complain about EA's $2.99 sale when I saw it posted so I guess I'll hold off on that. Thanks again

I've been playing Edge Extended for the past couple of weeks on the iPad and on my iPod touch and I love it, put it on your wish list if you missed it being on sale.
 
In for Tiger Woods iPhone+iPad for free. Also in for NyxQuest HD. I have that on WiiWare and it's a cool game. For 99 cents I'll double dip and have it on the iPad too. FYI, there is a free Lite version which gives you the idea of what the game is like and how it controls on the iPad. I think it works quite well.

Does anyone have Lara Croft? I loved that on XBLA, but the reviews for the iPad version aren't so hot.

I liked Edge Extended until it got difficult, so I'm unsure if I'll bite on the original or not. Basically once you started having to hang onto walls, then I found the game fairly infuriating. I did find that it got much easier to do that if I switched to dpad controls, but I preferred the swipe controls otherwise.
 
I bought SimCity Deluxe last time it was on sale and I was rather disappointed by it. It has about zero depth. I realize it can't be fully featured like the PC game but I expected more than just laying streets and zones.

Just as a general note, I thought I was done with the one-touch runner genre after Run Like Hell did it so well but holy crap Jetpack Joyride is amazing fun.

Hardly a CAG-tier price but King of Dragon Pass is also GREAT fun, even at $10. It's got too much random chance and there are a few issues I have with the setting but other than that it's a great little kingdom building game.
 
Grabbed Tiger Woods, thanks for posting about it!

And no deal going on right now, but I grabbed Aralon for $0.99 awhile ago, and just started playing it. It is fantastic. It's commonly compared to the Elder Scrolls, and compared to the old Xbox game Morrowind, I like Aralon much better. Obviously it is nothing compared to Oblivion and soon Skyrim, but it's a nice appetizer until Skyrim arrives.
