I have the iPhone 3GS and my two yr contract just came open and have been hoping for the 5 and am disappointed with today's announcement. I don't even care if it has 4g speeds as the 3G is enough for what I do. I don't know what I was expecting, they did make some upgrades but just seem very weak compared to everything that's out these days.

Rant over. Sorry.

Apple makes worthless crap that is guaranteed to be obsolete in a year or two tops...thats what they do best. Shocked? ROFL, get used to it!

Wait another year and the iphone 6 (or iphone 5-4GS LOL!) will be out to gouge people for another few hundred bucks. Its just an ongoing cycle: Apple puts out shiny new iphone; millions flock like moths to a lamp and spend billions on their crap; Apple releases slightly updated version of same crap next year; millions flock like moths to a lamp and spend billions more. The cycle continues on and on where Apple farts out some garbage and people eat it up like its the greatest thing ever...

Cmon Apple, I am waiting for your next non-upgradeable piece of garbage hardware that will be obsolete in a year... Screw an ipad, I want an ibed so I can lay down and relax while you are screwing me in the ass. Dont keep me waiting because I am a mindless consumer!

...and dont even get me started on their horrible, bloated itunes software. Ughh!

The new iPod Touch is worthless. Wish they'd spend some R&D money on that, give it the iPhone 4 body instead of that pancake shit, fit the screen to the body and dump the home button.

there are cheaper, better android and windows 7 phones with better features, yes.

Welcome to cellphone market? At least you are not in Japan, whee they release 2 new model each year
there are cheaper, better android and windows 7 phones with better features, yes.
Actually, that's the sad thing. My Droid Incredible (a cellphone) with the PowerAmp app sounds better than my iPod Classic (dedicated music player). Apple should worry less about aesthetics. Listen to what consumers want, not what Steve Jobs feels like blessing the peasants with.

Every year Apple announces stuff, I just feel like nothing changes, or they make changes in all the wrong areas.

Droid makes 10 phones a year so they are outdated in a month so it suks all way around. You are either apple sheep or droid sheep and small sliver are windows sheep but not too many of them yet.

I can concur, Droid phones are just as bad. I bought the Incredible and it dropped $50 after the Incredible 2 came out like a week later. Then the DInc2 was almost immediately made obsolete when the Thunderbolt came out.

Compare tech specs from your 3GS to the new 4S, it's a better phone in every possible way. I've got a 16GB 3GS, and I'm absolutely thrilled about the 4S.

would you feel better if they called it the iphone 5 instead of the 4S? I mean cmon, it has faster processors, more memory, more features and faster data speeds than the iphone 4.

i bet if apple named it the iphone 5 instead of the 4S the blogosphere would be going nuts instead of being negative.

# of iPhones in last 10 years? 7 or 8 right?
# of Android phones in last 10 months? 15?

Yeah, Apple gouges on new hardware SO MUCH!!!

Since you're so allergic to reality, let me guess, you regularly vote republican don't you?

I do and I have no problem with Apple products (other than the price) or the iPhone 4S. It'll replace my 3G nicely, tyvm.
Generalizations: They're not cool. :D

Yeah, it seems like a pretty nice hardware upgrade.

Just doesn't have the rumored thinner, tear drop shaped case design that was rumored for the iPhone 5.

That is a tad dissapointing as one of my gripes with smart phones is their still a tad bulky. Moot anyway as I still don't want one as I just can't see paying for a data plan when I'm near a computer most of the time and have an iPad 2 already (and have wifi at home and work). Just not worth the data plan prices to have internet/e-mail the few times I need it when out and about.

I agreed with everything on this thread, except this. It's not one company making the android phones, so big difference.

I really like my iPhone 4. Is it perfect? Nope, but it's still pretty great, and the 4s looks to be better still and it's still a really nice looking phone. If you like your Android or WP7 phone, well I think that's great. Peace?

The 4s is a very nice improvement even over the 4 in pretty much every way, let alone the 3GS. Much faster, improved camera, Siri looks great, 64 GB model available, etc. Yeah, the shell is the same. That just means I'll still be able to use my nifty tripod attachment and it will still snap in perfectly and be lined up right, so I'm fine with that. It's not really surprising that it's the 4s and not a 5, given that we got a 3G and then a 3GS. Why did people think Apple would announce both a 4s and 5? That was pretty nutty. Next year there will be an iPhone 5, and the year after that we'll get a 5s. Is this news? Apparently it was to some/many.

Alas, it doesn't look like I'm eligible for an upgrade until 12/04/11, but that's not too far off. I probably will upgrade then, because the improvements made to it are things that matter to me. Sure, I'd like 4G, but I'm not real clear on the coverage 4G has around here, so it's far from a deal-breaker for me. The performance of 3G on the 4s is said to be significantly improved, and really it's not bad on the 4 anyway. So if I get better performance over the same areas I'm already covered, then that's a good thing.

The only problem with the Iphone 4S is that Apple let the media run with wild assumptions of a whole new phone, the Iphone 5, for the past 4 months.

Apple's lack of comment on the Iphone 5 during the hype build up lead to the dissapointment. If they had come out and said 6 months ago that the next Iphone would be more of a standard upgrade, not an entirely new platform, then people would have loved the new announcement.

It's all about expectations.

I completely agree with this.
It almost makes me wonder if a 5 was in the works but then pulled at some point before yesterday.

Exactly. Comparing all phones on an OS to a single manufacturer doesn't make any sense. Compare Samsung or Motorola to Apple in that regard, not the entire Android phone lineup.

It's because most people don't understand what Android is. They think google makes all of these phones, or even that Android is a company making them.

The 4S won't be any faster on the network than most 4 users are getting. AT&T's network simply doesn't have the backhaul in most places for it to make a difference. In the LA area I only get 1-2 Mpbs.

All phone hardware is almost immediately outdated. That's how the market works.
there are cheaper, better android and windows 7 phones with better features, yes.
Better how? Ignore LTE service and larger screens. How are the other two clearly better? (keep in mind most OS difference you point out will be user preference, which is also what a larger screen is)
Exactly. Comparing all phones on an OS to a single manufacturer doesn't make any sense. Compare Samsung or Motorola to Apple in that regard, not the entire Android phone lineup.
Those companies released more than 1 model of Android phone each year.
Those companies released more than 1 model of Android phone each year.
So? There's also like multiple revisions of the iPhones, from size to white. Counting iPhone 4 as one item isn't exactly fair either.

The iPhone 4S looks great to me, not sure what you were expecting.

I will be replacing my 3GS as soon as it comes out.

Wrong, Android is presented as a brand that is just as "strong" (for lack of a better word) as iOS is to Apple.
But if you want to use that as your example, how many HTC devices of the "Android" persuasion have released in the same time frame as that of Apple and the iPhone? Even if they have to make a different one for each carrier and call it the Incredible or the Pickle or the Magnificent something or other, how many Verizon HTC phones have there been since the iPhone 3? Hint, more than 4.

Trust me, your phone doesn't care about you, no reason to be loyal to its brand. But it does give the internet a chance to play I've got the bigger dick because of my toys so bravo for playing along every one.

I really hope my wife changes her mind and upgrades her phone. She has a 3G (not a 3GS - a 3G) and it is a total piece of shit now. It can barely run iOS4 and everything takes forever to load, including stupid shit like email and texts. She claims that she is fine with her current phone though so who am I to argue?

There's been THREE HTC Android phones on Verizon -- Incredible, Incredible 2, and Thunderbolt, which runs on 4G. Just because there's not an iPhone 4G phone yet, doesn't mean you have to be so butt-hurt.

My wife and I are currently experiencing the same on our 3G iPhones. Some apps take 30+ seconds to load.
Sounds like you have an opportunity to score some brownie points by surprising her with a new 4S. ;)
So? There's also like multiple revisions of the iPhones, from size to white. Counting iPhone 4 as one item isn't exactly fair either.
Actually, yes it is. Those are all variations of the same model. HTC does some of their models in white, just like a few other manufacturers. It's still the same phone.

Probably too late now, but if you are on 3G stick with iOS 3. iOS4 will actually slow things down a lot.

She would kill me for spending that much money on her for anything. Seriously.

Can I go back? She is using iOS4 but doesn't care about any of the features - she refuses to even use the folders!

It's not quite extreme as a new model, but it's not like they're released all at the same time. It's progressively released as an upgrade. In a way, you could argue it's worse, because if you want to buy a 32GB model, you will buy a new phone again with otherwise the same hardware.

Well personally, I have spent a lot of time around both iOS, Android and Blackberry (I was a developer for both Android and Blackberry, but we don't need to talk about Blackberry, lol). Anyway I dealt with the strength's and weaknesses of both and I have to say that I prefer both for different uses.

For phones or music players, I really like iOS better because simply it just works. I don't play games on the iPod, I don't need all this customization options, all I need is something that can do e-mail, browse the web, do some apps, and make calls/texts (and my iPod can do that perfectly). I don't need to look into rooting it and well it does everything I want it to do.

Now with that said, for tablets I highly like Android better. Just for the fact that the iPad's layout looks kinda well dull. With android you can fill up your home screen with widgets like weather, a clock, and so on and personally this is real nice on a bigger screen where as it kinda feels cluttered on a phone to me.

I absolutely agree. I had a basic Android phone and got an iPhone 4 a few months ago. I can't upgrade, but the 4S isn't anything to write home about anyway. I'll wait for the iPhone 6 to come out, but if it isn't LTE, I'm jumping ship to Android.
Those companies released more than 1 model of Android phone each year.
I never said they didn't. Instead, I said compare the number of Android phones they put out over X years instead of the total number of phones that run Android for an apples to apples comparison instead of an apples to bowling ball one.

lol well talk to Sprint today about the IPhone 4s, when I talked to them in July they said I would be elgible for an upgrade credit of $75 (1 year) in OCT, well I called today to see what my final price would be for the IPhone 4s.....The full $349.99....umm what about my upgrade credit of $75? Sir Sprint did away with that last month, now at 24 months you get $150 upgrade credit. We no longer offer the $75 credit after 12 months. WTF Sprint, very convient for them to do that especially after I was set on upgrading in OCT (dident know IPhone would be on Sprint, I have an EVO 4g) Now I got to wait till September 2012 to get a new phone. I wonder if Sprint CS rep would help me out and at least honor the $75 upgrade credit, I have been with them for 8 years.

hmm might contact retention (or whatever its called, the department that tried what ever it can to get a member to not leave), and tell them to terminate my contract, hopefully they will honor the $75 rebate, but then again they might call my bluff, because their aint no way in hell I would pay a $200 Early Termination Fee lol

Figure out a way the math works in your favor to threaten termination: $200 termination fee, plus whatever the cost of the new iPhone is at another carrier after their discounts for a new 2 year contract has to equal the same, or ideally less than paying full price for the new iPhone and staying with Sprint.

If they're offering you it at $349.99 they're already giving you a discount. Iphones start at 649.99 and up to 849.99 for full retail price.
If they're offering you it at $349.99 they're already giving you a discount. Iphones start at 649.99 and up to 849.99 for full retail price.
Sprint works like this, if you have the $150 upgrade credit and you renew your 2 year contract, you get it at a new customer price $199.99 (after the $150 discount) for the 16gb IPhone 4s. Im not sure how much longer my EVO 4G is going to last, hopefully a year I guess when Im elgible for the upgrade credit.

If you have a 3G/3GS, the upgrade is probably worth it for it. If you have an iPhone 4... no.

I have a Verizon iPhone 4 (work made me ditch my EVO 4G and switch, which was a bummer, but at least I don't have to pay $80/month anymore) and I was relieved that this "upgrade" was barely an upgrade at all for me. Who cares if the camera is better, I have a real camera for serious picture-taking.

Also it would be nice if the stupid phone would stop dropping signal for no reason until I cycle the power, and the touchscreen actually worked during calls...

I miss Android.

My bad, I forgot that the Rhyme is Windows. So, since April 29th, 2010 there have been three HTC Droid phones on one carrier. How many NEW Apple phones since then? One. How many Motorolla Droids on just one carrier? Five! THOSE GOUGING BASTARDS REPLACING THEIR PRODUCTS RABBLE111!!

I stand by my original statement which was aimed towards the guy who said that Apple gouges on products by making a new one every year. This is obviously incorrect.

Oh noes, I'm butt hurt because my precious beloved iPhone doesn't run 4G! Actually, I'm just fine with it since I do all my data over wi-fi with the thing with very rare exceptions. Seriously bud, try harder, you might get me riled up. Probably not over a fucking telephone of all things however.

You can't really expect to choose a timeframe that benefits your argument and win...

I'll do the same thing then... Since May 2010, there has been 1 iPhone on Verizon's CDMA, 1 HTC Android on the same 3G network. Lightningbolt doesn't count, cause that's almost the same as a different carrier, and prompted only because Verizon has 4G.

I can even go further and say, between May 2010 and November 2011, iPhone released two iPhones on Verizon, same number as HTC Android phones on the same period on Verizon.

On top of this, many phones get renamed to Droid for name recognition. It's not one company making Droids. The one known as Droid has 3.5 revisions in three years, Droid X 2 in two years, Incredible 2 in two years... It's no faster than iPhone releases.

Sorry, read the wrong timeline. I was looking st discontinued dates, not introduction dates.

It's absolutely ridiculous to blame Apple because the media hype got everyone expecting a phone with a laser projector and holographic keyboard.
