I just did it. I made the switch from iPhone to android a week ago and I'm loving it.
After waiting since June for the new iPhone announcement and being completed disappointed, I picked up a Samsung Galaxy SII.
So far I'm loving it, although it's a bit of transition.
More than one place to buy apps and most of the apps are free!?!
I couldn't take another 2 year contract with a 3.5 inch screen and blocky phone body.
Finally took the smartphone plunge and ordered a 4S from Verizon. Won't ship until after the 28th, but I'm not in a rush and didn't want to hassle with trying to score one locally.
I'd been considering android, but I'm a bit tied to the iOS stuff already since I have an iPad 2. And I preferred the 3.5" screen. I won't watch movies or do much netsurfing on a phone anyway since I have a laptop and iPad. I'll just check e-mails, sports scores, play some simple games, read Kindle books on the go (when away from my Kindle and/or iPad) etc. and 3.5 is fine for that and easier to carry around in a pants pocket etc.
I'm tired of hearing people say this. It's essentially voice activated web search and commands for your phone. That's not even remotely like Skynet.
Maybe. But it doesn't change the fact that you don't have to memorize commands anymore which makes it ten times more useful than previous voice activated commands.
Instead of having to state a list of commands in a specific manner, you can talk to Siri like a normal conversation. One of the reviews hit it right on the head. With other voice activated programs, the person using it has to be smarter because they have to memorize a list of arbitrary commands when it comes to dialing, texting, looking up the weather, etc.
# of iPhones in last 10 years? 7 or 8 right?
# of Android phones in last 10 months? 15?
Yeah, Apple gouges on new hardware SO MUCH!!!
Since you're so allergic to reality, let me guess, you regularly vote republican don't you?
Wow, you are way off.
So let me understand your logic... Since I dont care for apple garbage that must mean Im republican? ROFL. In that case then, since I drive a mercedes around all day, every day, for work I must be rich too, right? You are a moron and obviously an apple fanboi. Deal with it and move on. (BTW, I am a democrat and unfortunately voted for Obama, but that is a whole other story that pisses me off...)
As far as apple vs android...I dont use either of them. I have a normal cell phone, not a smart phone, and it does just fine for me. I dont need to be on the internet wherever I go, and if I do need to do things online I have a laptop, a netbook, and a desktop. I need a smartphone, or another wireless device, like I need a hole in the head. I dont understand how this turned from an "iphone = POS" thread to an "apple vs android debate." As soon as someone bashes on apple the fanbois pop out and are like "ummm, well, Android has released x devices in the last blah blah years, and blah blah blah..." Android is an example of another corporation witnessing the massive profits apple is reaping, and developing their own smartphone OS/hardware/whatever to compete. They are almost as bad in my book...they just dont have that "holier than thou" attitude that apple has where they just assume that everything they sh*t out is pure gold. At least Android is open-source and not just a bunch of proprietary BS controlled by one corporation purely to rake in billions of dollars in profit. When you use an apple device you are at apple's mercy as far as what you can and cannot do with the device you own and paid for with your hard-earned money. Why do you think so many people "jailbreak" their iCrap?
Again, I dont like apple because they fart out worthless garbage. Oh here, let me sell you an overpriced iphone. Then 6 months to a year later we will upgrade some minor aspect of it (maybe a slightly faster processor or a better camera) and charge you full retail again. If you dont know what this is called, then you need a lesson on "manufactured obsolescence." Its a ploy to get as much money from consumers as possible while polluting our world with more useless electronic devices that will be garbage in a year. ...oh yeah, and lets make the phone and screen as fragile as possible so that when you drop it from 3 feet it breaks or cracks the screen and you need to spend more money to fix or replace it.
Lets fill up our landfills with millions of worthless iCrap devices and spew more toxins into the planet (via lax manufacturing processes in China and old discarded devices (and batteries!) seeping into the ground in landfills). There are now more cell phones in North America than there are people! ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_number_of_mobile_phones_in_use ) And I have heard quotes that it could be up to 2 times as many phones as people. It is totally ridiculous, but thats the way we work: screw preventative measures, lets wait until there is a problem of some sort BEFORE we fix it. Lets keep manufacturing non-upgradeable garbage that is obsolete practically the moment it is released and say f*ck you to our planet and future generations as we pollute and over consume our way into the future.
If you want to jump on the apple bandwagon then go right ahead. I prefer not to be a sheep, and think and do for myself rather than be told what is "new and cool" by some corporation who is not looking out for my best interests. (The sole purpose of a corporation is to make money for stockholders, and when your interests are totally vested in that pursuit then it is easy to see how things like "green manufacturing processes" and "waste reduction" get pushed to the side in order to gain bigger profit margins. Apple isnt our friend that wants to give us these awesome devices that we need...they want our money, thats it. They invent devices that we dont need, tell us we need them, then gouge us $500 or more to buy one every year! Its totally ridiculous IMHO when you stand back and look at the bigger picture.)
BTW, a funny joke I heard: Why didnt Steve Jobs' life flash before his eyes when he died?
Lots of words...
Ok. Before I type this out: Full disclosure I have owned an iPhone for a couple of years. It is the only Apple product I own. Now here are my lots of words.
OK first off, Apple is not the only company to do these things that you are talking about. I think its fine for you to say that you don't like Apple, but your reasons for justifying your dislike are common to the majority of electronic manufacturers in the world.
Apple makes a ton of cellphones and pollutes the environment, so does every single other cellphone manufacturer in the world, so do you not have a cellphone? Electronic waste is a serious concern, but that definitely is not just an Apple problem, even the link you gave would not attribute it solely to one company.
Apple is a corporation they are out to make money, they are big. I see you own an xbox, so obviously buying from a corporation isn't that big of a deal for you. People say corporations are bad, but every business starts small, they have good ideas and eventually get bigger. So at some predefined point they are just supposed to stop growing?
Manufactured obsolescence is real, but every company does this, to do otherwise would be a foolish business plan for any manufacturer of electronics. I'll point out that just because an iPhone 4s came out, doesn't mean that the original iPhone doesn't work anymore. I feel your complaint here is more about people in general's tendency to upgrade to the newest and shiniest thing. How is that Apple's fault? Also as for breaking the phone, again most mobile phones or electronic devices have this issue, how is that specific to Apple?
Finally, no company big or small has your best interest in mind. The primary goal for any company is to make money. Most of them do that by satisfying the largest amount of customers they can. When you get to be the size of Apple, it's impossible to please everyone, but they wouldn't be in business if they didn't please the majority of people.
I know it sounds like I'm whiteknighting Apple, but I think it's more about the reasons you gave rather than the actual like/dislike. I don't really think it's a big deal to boycott apple or any company, but unless you have no electronics in your house, the reasons you gave are hypocritical.
I'm tired of hearing people say this. It's essentially voice activated web search and commands for your phone. That's not even remotely like Skynet.
Eh, Skynet has been up and running for decades now. No need to worry about Siri yet.
You can look at this from another point of view. I used to have to carry a mp3 player, a cellphone, and a video game handheld. Now I just need 1 iphone, so instead of 3 devices I only need 1.
