iPhone, iPad & iOS Discussion -- White iPhone on Sale 4/28
I'm not actually sure if unlocking was necessary, as I forgot to try it first, but I think it is. In any case, I'm now definitely going to keep it.
Why would you have to unlock to put an AT&T sim in an AT&T phone?

Frash for iPhone 4 is out and it works!!!!!!!!!!! FLASH BITCHES!!!!
Why would you have to unlock to put an AT&T sim in an AT&T phone?
I thought the pre-paid sim cards were locked to certain phones. In any case I don't think it's a problem having it unlocked too, correct? Future sale or carrier possibilities....

Also, I installed Frash 0.02 and it runs Super Mario Crossover. Of course since there is no physical keyboard and no (not yet anyway) support in it for a virtual keyboard, you can't do much. Still amusing to be able to run it. FYI, it uses a ClickToFlash type UI, so you can selectively enable the flash stuff.

EDIT: could you connect a bluetooth keyboard to the iPhone and get keys to work that way? Not like it would be convenient, but would be amusing to try.

EDIT2: here's the page for Frash, with info on how to install it: http://digitaldj.net/2010/08/06/flash-for-iphone-4-yes-frash-0-02/

EDIT3: hulu.com doesn't work. I used iCab mobile with it set to have the user agent of Safari Mac. It loads the site partway, but then crashes iCab. YouTube works sort of - the flash videos I tried only partially displayed. They were cut off.

EDIT4: trying to playing Canabalt via this is quite challenging. It's dog slow and there's a lengthy delay between tap and effect. Also, amusingly (or not?) it continues to run while Safari is in the background. I'm hearing the music play even though I'm at the SpringBoard. Hmm. I had to quite Safari via the task manager to stop it.
anyone else notice their battery is draining faster than it used too with the new jb/unlock
Nope. Haven't noticed a difference. Maybe you are running something in the background constantly that you dont know about.

Maybe you've got Canabalt running in the background. ;)

But seriously, I can't say yet whether or not battery drain is worse. I have had the battery drain faster, but that's probably due to all the installing, uninstalling and messing around with all the jailbreak stuff available, which has been pretty non-stop!
Just downloaded appflow from cydia. If you want to individually turn off badges for apps this will do it for ya.
appflow was a godsend. seeing those badges drove me nuts.

edit: is it me or is turning off the badges temporary? as soon as i use the app in question, like the app store, the badges pop right back up.

What's the big deal about badges? They seem useful to me. Maybe I just have apps that I want that info from. Moreover, you can turn badges off for individual apps anyway!

Settings (App) -> Notifications -> App you hate badges in -> Badges (turn it off)

What exactly does this appflow do that that existing option doesn't? Color me confused.

EDIT: I just looked at "AppFlow" and it seems to be a CoverFlow interface for launching apps. What's that got to do with badges? Downloading it to check it out....

EDIT2: AppFlow is kind of cool, but the names it uses for apps seem to be the filenames and not the app names you normally see. So Beneath a Steal Sky becomes "iBASS". Ummm. Not so great. Would be very nice, though, if it used the normal names. Oh, and if it didn't add advertising. It's been deleted. Is there some other appflow?

definite big difference in battery drain with this jailbreak. started the day (8am with full 100% and as of 320 im down to 38%)I manually deleted all multitasking items and to no avail. what could it be? here are my installed:

cydia
winterboard
3G unrestrictor
AT&T logo thing
5 icon dock
dock flow
black SMS theme

This whole thread got really fucking annoying a while ago. If jailbreak talk is ok now, why hasn't someone created a separate jailbreak post?

Discuss something iPhone 4 related then to get the topic back on track....
Discuss something iPhone 4 related then to get the topic back on track....
I don't necessarily have anything right now, but every time I look at my subscriptions and see that there's new content in the thread, I end up clicking it to see what's being discussed -- and lately, it's always off-topic jailbreaking talk. Honestly, I'd rather see the thread just die off for now until someone does come up with something new that's iPhone 4 related to discuss.

I'm not one of those "threads must stay on topic at all times!" people, and if this were simply an off-topic aside that was going to go away in a few days I wouldn't find it a particularly big deal. But jailbreaking is a huge topic in and of itself that's likely to always have ongoing discussion around it. Wouldn't it make more sense for it to have its own thread?

unsubscribe to this thread and/or make a jailbreak thread
unsubscribe to this thread and/or make a jailbreak thread
Why should I have to unsubscribe from a thread just because a few people want to threadjack it for off-topic discussion?

And I have no interest in jailbreaking or a jailbreak thread. Why would you want me to make it, when I would do absolutely nothing to maintain it? I mean, if you really want a thread that's immediately abandoned by the OP, then sure, I guess . . . But why don't those of you who want to discuss jailbreaking make a jailbreak thread?

Really, is it that fucking difficult?

If you arent going to do anything about what you are complaining about, then shut the fuck up.

the last 5 pages have pretty much been malik and crunch going back and forth with jailbreaking talk with the occasional screen shots posted by malik.

theres not too much news on the iphone front until 4.1 comes out and/or the white iphone comes out.

I agree with making a separate jailbreaking thread, and suggested that several days ago. I hadn't done it, in part because I'm new to jailbreaking and so didn't feel sufficiently knowledgable about it to be the OP creator. I'm sure Mr. Malik would be ideal. Still, I'll do so anyway, I just won't be able to fill in much useful info in the OP.

Yep, it appears to have been deleted. Jailbreaking and unlocking are both legal, so that's pretty annoying. Oh well, I tried.

EDIT: I sent CheapyD a message requesting that the thread be reinstated, as follows:

I created a thread on jailbreaking and unlocking iOS devices and it appears to have been deleted. It was here:

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=269788

Jailbreaking is officially legal now. There's plenty of articles out there about this. An amendment was made to the DMCA specifically to allow for jailbreaking. There've been many articles on this, but here is one:

http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/07/feds-ok-iphone-jailbreaking/

Note that it also specifically makes unlocking phones legal in the US - see the end of that article. I discussed this in my thread too.

I created this jailbreaking thread because some folks in another thread were bothered by all the jailbreak discussions going on in that thread ever since these changes to the DMCA, which was taking it off topic. I hope that my thread can be reinstated or if it can't, let me know how I could change it, if I could change it, to net CAG's acceptance. Thanks!

But if CheapyD doesn't want jailbreak discussions, then he doesn't want them. So I'm going to defer all discussion to another forum until and if I hear that it gets the CheapyD OK. FYI, there is an entire section on jailbreaking at toucharcade. See:
Stupid data question: Does being connected to WiFi/network count towards my 2GB monthly cap?
no it doesnt. if youre on a cap plan you wanna be on wifi as much as possible. im on wifi whenever im at home and at certain friends houses, even though im on an unlimited plan i generally use around 500mb (give or take) according to my bill.

I hadn't ever gone over about 600 MB until I had a 1 week need to tether due to the internet going out at home for a week. I'm up to 1.2 GB after 11 days. However, now that internet is back at home I don't expect to reach 2 GB. I'm on an unlimited plan, but have been mulling over the idea of dropping to a 2 GB cap plan to save the $5 a month. If I never go near, or rarely ever go near, 2 GB, it would make sense. Even if you go over the overage charge is reasonable. If you were to go over 3 GB, then things could get ugly. :)

That's what I thought. I'm connected to my wireless network at home AND at work which is where I use the phone 95% of the time.

I can now vouch for the effectiveness of the Case-Mate Gelli case. Yesterday I sat down on a folding chair which then decided to topple me over, and my iPhone 4 went flying, bounced off the side walk a few times and landed face down. It was unscratched. The case is a bit scuffed up, of course, though not as much as I was expecting.

The proximity sensor issue is really starting to get on my nerves. I was trying to work my dad through a computer issue last night and managed to hang up on him several times before finally just setting the phone to speaker phone. Any idea if 4.1 is supposed to fix this problem?

my girfriend has complained about this quite a bit. i havent noticed it at all. i guess it just depends on how you hold your phone, but i havent had any problems.

It doesn't typically happen when I have a free hand, but rather when I multitask. Holding the phone between my shoulder and my ear tends to either put the person on hold or completely hang up the call on a semi-frequent basis. For now the only solution is to use speakerphone when I don't have a free hand.

I never had this problem with my 3G, so I just hope they fix the problem soon.

because you're shaking the phone causing the screen to activate, i don't think that will be "fixed" as tons of people like me need the screen to activate during a call. a good solution is to use a headset when you don't have a free hand.

I agree, I want to be able to access my screen during a call. I don't need it often, but when I do, it's extremely convenient. Honestly, the ideal "fix" would probably be to add in a setting either to adjust the sensitivity of the proximity sensor (ideal, but possibly too complicated for the average user) or to allow the ability to enable or disable activating the screen during a call.

I've only ever had the proximity sensor issue happen once in the time since I got the phone (on launch day), and a hard reset seemed to clear it up. Have you tried that, BlueLobstah?

I haven't run into the proximity sensor issue at all, but I also haven't ever held the phone between shoulder and ear. Perhaps if I did I'd run into it. I imagine it would be fixable with a tweak to the software. Just a sensitivity adjustment or something of that sort. Use a headset or speakerphone in the mean time. Wouldn't hurt to try a restore when you have time to go through all that (which does take a long time depending on how much stuff you have to resynce afterward.)

That's not how the proximity sensor works.

I did that when I first received the phone.

I have no idea if a different sensor is being used from the 3G/3GS, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the 4.1 update is able to apply a software patch to fix it.

when you have your phone between your face and your shoulders, you have your phone moving around your face, probably messing up your sensor not keeping a constant contact. while youre doing that youre probably shaking your phone while doing other things quite vigorously. you probably need a headset while you multitask with other things, as i suspect you drive on the phone too.

Oh, I though you were suggesting it uses the accelerometer.

But I'm pretty sure it isn't the case, especially considering that I'm not the only one complaining about it. I had no problems with the 3G, so I still highly suspect it's a sensor sensitivity issue be it hardware or software.

Most of my proximity sensor problems came from holding my phone between my ear and shoulder. I stopped doing that and havent had an issue since.

got my free case yesterday (clear incase snap). i kinda like the look of it, but its a magnet for dust and fingerprints. also, it seems more slippery with the case. dont know that its improved my reception anymore than my old case. im going to use it today for a test run and then may go back to my other case.

Got an email from Apple today, my free case is on its way to me.. quite surprised actually I didn't think i'd be getting it so soon..

I opted for the Speck Fitted case.

My freebie Griffin Reveal Etch is still listed as expected to ship on October 5th. :( Oh well - I'm pretty happy with the case I have now (Case-Mate Gelli), so this will probably come right in time, once my current one is looking especially crappy.

My Bumper case arrived two weeks ago. I had no idea what it was when it arrived. I expected it to come from apple but a totally different company sent it to me.

After returning the blackberry torch, I decided to go for the iPhone 4 yesterdays. I had been told that it would take three weeks to arrive, but to my surprise it was shipped outnthis morning at 3am and I should have it on Monday.
