Im thinking of buying a harddrive based mp3 player. So far, ive looked at the iPod, iRiver, Dell Jukebox, and Creative Nomad. It looks like i'm leanin towards the nomad mainly because of the price and the extra storage (im lookin at the 40gb)) Anyone have any experiences with the nomad, or any reason why i shouldn't buy it. Any help appreciated thanks in advance.

Not to hijack your thread, but I'm also in the market for an mp3 player, and I'm actually looking at the new Dell Jukebox 20GB. If anyone has any experience with them, please post as well. Thanks.

I got a Nomad and love it. It's a little on the heavy side, but since I got my 30 gig for $180 with my employee discount, i'm not gonna complain.

I have no experience with the Nomad, but I recommend the iPod greatly. I bought one of the original 5 GB then a 15 GB about a year ago. They just keep getting better. It works flawlessly with iTunes, and its the most intuitive, sexiest mp3 player out there. Also as far as price goes on the iPod, its more expensive than the Nomad, but you can save yourself some money with an educational discount on apple's site. Also look around for refurbs, they're much cheaper.

i hear nothing but good things about the creative labs; items....
my uncle had a dell dj, and it froze alot :(...had 2 wait till the batteries died out...but i think he had an old one also..id give u more info..but he moved away

I got a Nomad about 10 months ago from Circuit City for $220, 30 GB. Works great and hasn't caused any problems for me. I mainly use it to listen to my CDs while I'm driving but occasionally use it outside of my car.

iPod all the way.

Aireo, small on memory, but I have been looking at this one solely because it would work on my wireless networks.

Ipods cost too much. A 20-gig one costs $300, while a 30-gig Nomad lists for $240 and can easily be found for much less (I got one for $200 after rebate). It's been nothing but awesome.

Don't buy the Dell. My girlfriend has one and she's on her third model, the thing likes to just up and die on you.

Nomad is considerably larger and heavier than the ipod, however it's difficult to justify buying an ipod over it, given the features, storage and price. I had a 40gb nomad for about a year, and I loved it, however, the sexy appeal of the ipod finally got to me. I ebayed the nomad and got me an ipod. Don't regret it one bit. The nomad will do everything the ipod can do, sometimes even better than the ipod, but the ipod looks so much better, and fits in my pocket much nicer.

In conclusion, given your willingness to spend money, get the ipod or the nomad. Done, and done.

I have a DellDJ & can't complain. The hard drive on it broke once, and Dell replaced it, no questions ask, the very next day.

The Nomad is the best way to go, I've had a 5GB one for almost 4 years and I have had no problems. It's a great device, and they are usually a lot cheaper than the alternatives as well. There's no real reason to pay more for less capacity, it makes no sense.

I have a Creative Nomad and I've never had any problems with It..I think I picked It up for around 150.00 at Circuit City worth every penny

I'm also in the market for an mp3 player. I'm looking for something that I can also listen to the radio with. I know that the iPod doesn't offer this as a feature. I believe that the iRiver and a few others might.... Something else to think about

Creative Labs items are great...amazing sound, amazing quality, and great price for size.

However, when I had a 30 gb Creative Labs nomad zen I found that the players with OVER 1-2 GB of space just weren't worth it. I found myself listening to the same songs over and over simply because I didn't feel like sifting thru all my songs.

My advice would be to get a flash based player from iRiver. I have an ifp-790 right now with 512 mb of space and it hold about 60-70 songs. It's small, lightweight, and comes with a wriststrap and neckstrap. The sound is excellent as well.

I also couldn't stand the HD based players making my pants fall down constantly bc they were so heavy :/

P.S. - www.cnet.com has some good reviews of the mp3 players you're looking at. I would head over there and do some research.

I have an original Dell DJ. Its nice, but its too big to really carry around. I'll probably get an iPod sometime soon for the size/other features.

get the new Iriver , I have last years model and its awesome works really easy with a pc plus u get line in line out recording, am /fm radio , color screen , and a cool lcd remote for easy navigating while the players in ur pocket, oh 16 hour battery life also u cant go wrong .

I think the two biggest competitors would be iRiver vs. iPod

Both are pretty sick. iPod is more aesthetically pleasing, but iRiver is nice too and has more functions...

The iPod is the best all-around device, based on audio quality, ease of use, features, and price. It also has the most accessories because of its popularity, and for those who care, it's easily the best-looking player.

Creative has the best audio quality. Their older models like the Zen Xtra were known for that quality in addition to huge savings over competitors' models. Newer Creative models like the Zen Touch have tried to emulate the iPod, which means changes both good and bad. The audio quality remains top-notch, however.

iRiver makes devices that are incredibly feature-laden. They include just about anything you could possibly think of. Audio quality is pretty good, too. However, you'll have to pay a sizable premium for their players.

I haven't had any experience with Dell Jukebox players so I can't comment on those.

Do all of these mp3 players have the feature that you can turn to a specific radio station and listen to your player that way (I think the player sends out a radio signal)? If not, which ones do and which ones don't. What is the official name of this feature btw?

Thanks!

I know that the Ipod got a feature in which you can transmit it to a station like 88.7 or something like that, and you could pick it up on your radio...or at least I think so. It was some sort of accessory.
Not too sure about the rest though.

For best bang for your buck, Creative Nomand Xtra Jukebox got the 40 Gigs for only $200 in most places (Best Buy, CC, etc.)

Yeah, thats what I'm talking about. The reason I ask is because I plan to use it in my car alot, and I don't have a tape/cd player, only a radio :? .

I stand by iRiver. I've owned a 3rd generation apple iPod and hated it.. The battery was terrible and died within a year. The new battery isn't much better I hear. The iRiver iHP120 is a schweet MP3 player and the iHP320 is supposedly even better.

Ipods look too fragile. Thats why I never bought it. I have a habit of dropping portable Cd players and walkmans.

Is there any MP3 Player that are durable? Thats my biggest concern

I'm going to have to disagree with you on the iPod.
a) It's features and audio quality are no better and I think worse than Creative.
b) Ignoring my first point even, there is no way you can laud the iPod for its price. The thing is so much more expensive than everything else on the market. You buy it to look cool and fit in with the masses, thats it.

The iTrip is the accessory for the iPod that broadcasts to your radio.

I dont have experiece with the nomad but i have the creative zen touch 30 gig and love it to death. Can't see how i lived so long without it. No i havent tried putting any files on it yet. So i guess i wasnt much help to you, but from what I read the zen extra is a bit more updated then the nomads. As far as quality goes, Creative really surprised me , this thing is built well and i have had no problems with it so far. Software is good too, you really can customize everything and mess with titles, names playlists etc. I havnt even used half the stuff on that software.

When I say the iPod is the best all-around device, I don't mean that it outranks its competitors in every category. As a matter of fact, I don't think that it's tops in any category other than looks (and possibly ease of use). What I mean is that, across the board, I don't believe it has any weaknesses more severe than its competitors. It ranks admirably in every category, and that's what makes it the best all-around device to me.

I wasn't trying to praise the iPod specifically for its price; the price was merely one of the factors in my all-around assessment of MP3 players. In fact, I do believe that the iPod is overpriced! However, when there are competitors who charge even more than the iPod costs for similar products, I can't complain as much about Apple's price points.

By the way, my previous post even said that Creative has the best audio quality, so I'm not sure why you're trying to argue with me on that point when we agree that Creative has better audio than Apple.

I dropped my first gen iPod from about 3 1/2 feet on to a concrete stoop. It got a dent in the case but worked fine.

plus one thing that gets overlooked is the software. iPod is BY FAR the best at integration with its software, iTunes. IMO, part of what you pay for with an iPod is this ease of use.

To you Ipod owners, I have a (possibly dumb) question.

To transfer music from the PC to the Ipod, is there a USB port on the actual Ipod, or is the dock required for that? The reason I ask is because I was looking over Apple's website, and it says that the dock is only included with the 40GB, suggesting that if you buy the 20GB, you need to buy the dock separately. Is this accurate? It doesn't make sense to me why they'd include it with the 40GB and not the 20GB.

Thanks in advance.

Compared to the iRiver, it's a complete pain. Just plug the iRiver in, drag and drop, and go. No software to install, no need to use iTunes.

I have to say the iRiver is the best. Check out IGN Gear and PC Magazine, both rank hundreds of mps players and rate the iRiver as the best harddrive one. Audio quality, features, and ease of use (at least with loading songs onto the player) is the best. iPod has the easiest interface, but I just find iTunes totally annoying to use. IMO, get an iRiver, you won't regret it.

or you could go in a completely different direction and get a Delphi XM MyFi -- i just got one a week ago and, while there are a number of issues with it, i totally love it
