I can get an ipod shuffle for 88.00

or a mini for 180.00

which one should i get? Im leaning toward the shuffle because it is so slick, but i heard the shuffle isnt selling very well. IMO the mini is uglier than the regular ipod and shuffle, but 4gig is 4gig and it has a screen...

help me pick!

Shuffle sucks because you have no control over what you listen to. But you don't have to take my word for it, because I only listen to music at home or in the car, and never with headphones.

I would get the ipod mini. I like the screen because i like to see what is playing. How can you get the these so cheap?

i'd vote for the mini - the screen lets you hunt down a specific song, whereas the shuffle puts you at its mercy. and then the extra space on top of it ain't too shabby. i guess it depends on what you want it for -something tiny to go workout with and only need a couple of hours of music? shuffle it is. something general purpose that you want to put a good chunk of your cd collection on? mini all the way.

That basically says it all. I have a mini and I love it!

I love my mini. The shuffle intrigued me as well, but in the end I need to be able to look thru the songs sometimes, and you can't do that on a shuffle. Also, like you said, 4 gigs is 4 gigs.

Shuffle has 512MB, Mini (cheapest) has 4 Gig. Shuffle has no screen, Mini does. $100 difference...hmmm...

I really enjoy these 'help me choose' threads, it just goes to show alot of people have no power to do it for themselves, and if a game store told you years back that 'Jaguar is the new thing' you would have one sitting in your closet right now...

The best mp3 player in my opinion is Creative's Zen Micro, but if you're looking for an iPod, I would never go with the shuffle because I like to have the option to actually pick a song rather than just have a thing playing songs randomly. Besides, the only shuffle worth getting is the 1GB one and that will bring you pretty damn close to the price of the mini.

The Shuffe is not only random playing, you idiots. It has a play in order mode too.

I hate apple but even I don't spread this type of ridiculous misinformation.

With 512MB you can only store 50 songs on it anyway...what does it matter?

For someone that 'hates' Apple, you're sure quick to respond to incorrect information.
so mini all the way huh...the thing is, at 180 bucks, might as well buy a psp since i already have a pro duo >_

Actually his information was correct.

The Shuffle is damn slick to look and and hold. Takes up no room (unlike the mini). Depends on what you want it for. I know several folks who have a shuffle just for working out.

I have a mini that I love. That's because I use the PDA type features along with the music.

straight up, i would say the mini because it is a better product at a better value

for $88 you can get a better mp3 player than the shuffle in terms of quality and features.
The 512 creative muvo comes to mind as it has voice recording, lcd screen, fm radio and better headphones out of the box.

gizmo didn't say he was incorrect; he said that ham is quick to resond to incorrect information.

Why limit yourself to Apple's offering? When I looked for a flash player a few months ago, one of the best seemed to be a creative muvo micro; for around $100 I got a 512MB version with a screen, radio, and I think even a voice recorder; it's really, really nice.

If you are going to use it primarily to work out then the Shuffle is the way to go. You can creat a bunch of playlists and swap them out when you get bored. Otherwise I'd get the mini. Actually, I'd get the 30GB or 60GB photo but that's just me :)

You have to ask yourself a two questions:

1. Do you have a shit load of songs - In this case iPod mini wins 512MB/1gig vs. 4 gigs
2. Do you like to see what your hearing or setting playlist with a screen - ipod mini wins.

I would get an ipod mini, an ipod shuffle is only good for people that don't give a damn whats going to be playing or don't have the need to see a screen to set playlists and what nots (running, driving ect.). It's more of a back up to the ipod than anything else. If you don't give a crap about playlists or seeing what's playing by all means go for it, other wise spend a little more and get a full functional iPod.

Also, you can set the ipod shuffle to play in order or in shuffle, I own an ipod shuffle along with my Dell DJ 20 gig (2nd Gen) and if i'm going to an amusement park or something that envoles me being active i always take the shuffle since I rather brake a 99$ mp3 player (the shuffle is a tank though, i've dropped tons of time) than a 260$ one.

Go with the mini. I would only use the Shuffle to complement my iPod, use it on workouts, etc.

BTW, the 512 meg Shuffle holds 128 songs at 4 megs per song.

One thing the Shuffle has going for it is it uses Flash memory, not a hard drive like all the other iPods. No moving parts = impossible to have a HD crash. The little brick will take more abuse and last longer than the HD-based iPods.

I'm personally holding out for a Flash memory based iPod that has a clic wheel / display so you can choose your songs.

Most people here who are answering don't own an Ipod or Shuffle so they really can't give you an honest opinion. I have both...so here goes...

My first Ipod was the mini - and I was astounded at how limited it is. First of all, if you're a PC user, it's going to be troublesome waters ahead. Second, if you plan to use the Ipod on more than one computer, newsflash - you can't transfer songs/files from one computer to the next as easily as you can with other digital music players. It is a long, arduous, and slow process.

What it really boils down to is the functionality of the player. Unless you're extremely picky about your music and totally anal about it, I heartily recommend the shuffle. It's not as bad as you think not being able to see the songs that you want, but when it comes down to it, the Mini and other Ipods in general tend to be overloaded with data to the point that it becomes a pain searching for songs that you want. The clickwheel and all that make it easy to navigate but when it comes down to it, unless you just put it on random continuous play - just like the shuffle - you'll spend more time searching for songs than you will listening to them. Another thing: you'll never be away from your computer long enough to warrant having that many songs at your fingertips. Granted, road trips are great, but then you have to worry about battery life which means more accessories. But I like most people don't spend enough time on the road to warrant that kind of necessity.

When I first began to use the shuffle I was worried about the random (or non-random, there are two settings) play, but in the end it was always songs that I had chosen to upload in the first place. It's not as if it's a radio beaming random songs. And when I was using it (jogging, car, etc etc) I didn't meticulously hunt for songs, it's just like burning a CD every time you load it up.

Another thing is reliability. The Shuffle is much more reliable and better built all-around. It's light and can stand to be dropped. It's small enough to be convenient but it's not too small that it can be easily lost. There's no HD so the risk of hardware failure is very small...and it loads up songs much much faster than the Ipod/mini. Sound quality is very good. Overall I say that if you don't need hours of music you'll never be able to listen to, then go ahead with the shuffle.

the main reason i love the shuffle is because it is so freaking sexy, but now as I set my eyes on the muvo N200 (which didnt come out in US yet). And i gotta say, at 20 dollars more and only twice the weight of a shuffle, it packs a whole lot of extras.

I still cant ignore the AAA thing though, a AAA charger is like another 20 bucks!

I recently purchased a Shuffle after selling my 20 GB ipod and here's why.

You will never use all 20 GB's.

I have 60+ gigs of all of the cd's I've ripped to my HD so yes, technically I could use 20 GB. But I often found myself throwing on a playlists worth of songs and just listening to those as I walked to and from class - sometimes adding, sometimes deleting. The only time the extra songs came in handy was when I took a trip to Arizona - but even then I still listened to a handful of songs. I tried jogging with the 20 gb and that doesn't really work out. I used it more as a detachable hard drive than a music player.

I picked the 512 mb shuffle because all I need is 1-6 cd's worth of music to listen to. I need something to run with, and the screen of the 20 gb got scratched even though i was narotic about it. That and everytime you used the wheel on the 20 gb, it's battery life is drained more than it would being still. Do it long enough with the light and you'll be lucky if you get 8 hours out of it.

Go with an I-river product. More reliable and more bang for your buck. Their flash players get 25-40 hours of play time off of a singe AA battery and are close in price to the Shuffles. The 6 Gig H-10 has a color screen (you can put digital pics on it) an FM tuner and voice recorder (both extra accessories w/ the ipods) and an easily replacable rechargable battery ($40 on I-river's webpage vs. the $106 that Apple charges to replace the crappy battery in an Ipod). I sell both products at my part time job and people are far happier with I-river products.

Having used the shuffle, an iriver and a creative muvo, even with the hassle of replacing aaa batteries, the creative is the best value. Yes, the apple is well made and has a rechargeable battery, but you are paying mostly for the brand. In terms of overall quality, the iriver wins, hands-down, but it costs more and for its higher price, really should be rechargeable. The creative is a solid product with more features than the shuffle at a similar price.
Having a battery recharger, I do not suffer under the added cost of batteries, the batteries do last a long time, but like anything rechargeble, I rarely find myself draining the power. And carrying a second or 3rd battery on long trips is quite easy.
My sister has the ipod mini, many of my female friends also do, they love the size/style factor, but I would not consider them into the quality of the product, instead just wanting something "it" that does a good job playing songs.
Again, just between the shuffle and ipod, they serve very different needs.
I have no personal experience with jetaudio, but the more reviews I come across the better it sounds, and if I were looking for a player right now, I would go for it (and because of its rechargerable battery).
hey anyone know whats the difference between a Creative muvo micro and Creative zen nano plus? is it just different names?
Creative has decided Zen is the stronger brand name, so the zen is basically identical to the earlier model (just slightly more expensive).
The quickest link I could find confirming this:

You can set the playlist for your shuffle to whatever you want to in iTunes. You can also choose between play in order or shuffle modes, so its not random unless you want it to be, which isn't bad for a workout or something anyway because it gets old listening to the same songs in a row after a while. You also don't have to look at it to alternate between songs, so who cares if it has a screen. I have a 1 GB one that I got for free, and I think its great, but I would never pay anywhere near $100 for any music player thing. The 4 GB one does hold a lot more, but you can add/remove songs from either player whenever you want. I think I have over 150 songs on my shuffle now and its only slightly more than half full. Both are rechargeable so battery life shouldn't be a concern. I guess it depends if you really want to spend an extra $100 for more storage space and a more precise navigation through songs.
they were talking about the Nano having a FM as a upgrade, wtf? didnt the N200 have a FM also?
The thing about creative is they have a ton of mp3 players in the marketplace, many of the earlier players do not have fm, but the majority (and possibly all) of the newer products have fm. The n200 does have fm, as does its replacement the v200, but earlier models like the muvo tx, does not have fm.

Because we all encode at 256 bitrate+, mmhmm.
shuffle is pretty bad . u can break it easily.
I've dropped my shuffle more times than I'd like to admit--it's got some dings in it, but nothing major. HDD based players are more prone to breakage.

I have the ipod mini. I have ~3 gigs of songs I frequently listen to total, and so it is perfect for me (and it has been perfect for over a year now). Fits in my pocket, or clipped on my shorts at the gym.

I bought my girlfriend the ipod shuffle. She has about 900 megs of songs, so the 1 gig model suited her fine. The small form factor is perfect for her because she brings it with her everywhere, but the inability to locate certain songs occasionally does frustrate her. Though, it is a minor inconvenience which is easily resolved by switching to playlist mode.

I guess it comes down to whether size is more important than size. That is, physical size versus storage size. You decide... personally, considering they just dropped the prices on the 20 and 60 gig models (and include photo capability on both!) I plan on cashing in on my replacement plan at best buy for a new model soon.
