CAGiversary!

This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it was getting very close to the 5,000 thread mark, I figured it was time for a reset.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

Apple Game Center
Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games are starting to support this. Currently this only runs on iPod & iPhone, but an update will be coming soon that enables this for iPad users.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center exchange thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs. You can also exchange OpenFeint & Plus+ names there.

Important Notes:

 1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
 2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
 3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
 4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
 5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
 6. Apps can be re-downloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
 7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
 8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
 9. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.
 10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.
Did that iTrials game get removed/name changed?
Yes, it got pulled due to the name. On toucharcade.com the dev said it was going to come back, with a new name, and they weren't abandoning it. No ETA on it's arrival. I have it and it's pretty fun, but the level design isn't the best. It's still worth picking up once it returns.
Rumor has it the OS X app store will launch December 13th.
I think it's going to be great for folks like my Mom and my sister, who don't really know how to install apps. My Mom always has games she's drag installed, but she still runs it from the disk image. The app store will eliminate that completely. I think it's a fantastic idea.

Ah, ok, cool. Was about to pick it up today but I couldn't find it.
Looks like I was too late. Already up to 9.99. Oh well, I'm sure it will drop soon.
They might change their minds and drop the price, but I don't know. Even at $10 it's a bargain compared to the physical game (though, at least yesterday Amazon had it for $20 shipped - that's a bargain for the physical game, still double the price of Carcassonne for iOS). I think these board games will never have top 50 sales, so putting them on sale probably doesn't do a lot for them. Better to keep the price consistent and get steady sales. Of course I could be completely wrong. :)
I've never played Carcassonne but have heard great things. Is it hard to learn?
I think ti's pretty easy to learn, hard to master. Actually, not *that* hard to master. It's pretty accessible.
I've never played Carcassonne but have heard great things. Is it hard to learn?
I second the "easy to learn, hard to master" comment.

It takes a little while to get going, but once you do you'll really enjoy it. It's excellent for winding down after a long day at work, especially when you play against the computer.

Raising the price for a "universal" app seems like a bad plan to me. I know that I for one don't own an iPad and have no plans to buy an iPad, so if I were considering buying it now as an iPhone owner, I'd have to seriously ask what's in it for me to pay twice what the price has been for months. And yeah, I know they've been saying that the price will eventually go up for a while now, but that wouldn't make it sting any less (particularly, say, if I were a new iPhone/iPod owner who completely missed the opportunity to get it cheaper).

And yeah, relative to the price of the board game, $10 is cheap, but it also lacks a lot of the reasons for playing a board game (i.e. interaction with friends). Online play isn't the same.

I dunno . . . good luck to them, but $10 is relatively steep for an iPhone (or even an iPad) game, and it's past the usual cut-off point for a lot of people. For a game that really relies on groups of people buying it (since the main attraction is the online play), pricing it out of the range that many potential customers would be willing to pay seems like a poor move.
Looks like I was too late. Already up to 9.99. Oh well, I'm sure it will drop soon.
Hopefully. I don't think the price ever dropped before the update.
I bought it a long time ago and it has a good tutorial with voice acting even.

Appventcalendar gives you The Screetch for today's free game (http://itunes.apple.com/app/the-screetch/id382329317?mt=8).

"Easy to match, hard to capture.
Сrew of Screetches capturing cloudy spheres, your goal is to release them and catch all Screetches into flask.

But don't worry! It's as easy as it is fun. The Screetch is turn-based logic game. Just put together three or more spheres in line and they'll explode. Every explosion clear neighboring spheres, and the Screetch goes to the flask. When the flask is full, you go to the next level. That's it. Good luck! Catch all Screetches and have a good time!"

From TouchArcade, SEGA has permanently lowered the price on all of its iOS games:

Chu Chu Rocket: THEN: $4.99, NOW: $2.99
Chu Chu Rocket HD: THEN: $6.99, NOW: $4.99
Ecco the Dolphin: THEN: $2.99, NOW: $0.99
Golden Axe: THEN: $2.99, NOW: $0.99
Gunstar Heroes: THEN: $4.99, NOW: $2.99
Phantasy Star II: THEN: $4.99, NOW: $2.99
Shining Force: THEN: $2.99, NOW: $0.99
Super Monkey Ball 2: THEN: $5.99, NOW: $2.99
Super Monkey Ball 2 Sakura Edition: THEN: $7.99, NOW: $4.99
Sonic The Hedgehog 1: THEN: $5.99, NOW: $4.99
Sonic The Hedgehog 2: THEN: $5.99, NOW: $4.99
Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode 1: THEN: $9.99, NOW: $6.99
Streets of Rage: THEN: $2.99, NOW: $0.99

It still makes me scratch my head that all Sega can manage is watery Genesis ports, Sonic 4, and FINALLY something that can actually use the Ipod controls: Chu Chu Rocket, which I still didn't like even back on the DC or whatever.

Also, those Genesis ports aren't worth the dollar... Wait, $5 for Sonic 1 and 2? Eugh. Eugh. Eugh!

Figures, dropped $$$ on some games over BF, but Crystal War (got it free) is getting all my play time. Well worth .99.

Not working. It says not available in the current store (US).

Seems like a lot of big games are coming out today.

Eternal Legacy, Dungeon Hunter 2, Infinity Blade, Puzzle Quest 2, Dead Rising...

(the only one that's up as of now is Eternal Legacy)

Oh god, my wallet is gonna hate me. Probably will only pick up Dead Rising and Infinity Blade for today. Eternal Legacy & Dungeon Hunter 2 look great though.

Puzzle Quest 2 is up! The big question is does it still look crappy on the iPhone?

Sorry - no it's not. :( It's just showing up in appshopper, not actually in iTunes.

today is a HUGE day for releases, probably the single biggest iOS major game release day ever, these are all out at 11 pm eastern:

Puzzle Quest 2., which is AWSOME on ipad, not so much on iphone, at least the version I have. Universal app for 6.99. It's been reduced 3 bucks from its original mistaken release a few days ago.

Gameloft's final fantasy clone Eternal Legacy is out now for 6.99.

Gamelofts Dungeon Hunter 2 for 6.99. The original is one of my all time favorite iphone games.

Capcoms Dead Rising for 4.99.

Gamevils Illusia for 4.99. An action platforming rpg, I really want to try this one.

and then probably the most hyped iphone game release ever: Infinity Blade for 5.99

Jenga. Is that the thing Jobs demoed when the iPhone 4 was released? Might be interested in that if they spruced it up, especially if it has pass-and-play and wifi/bluetooth multiplayer.

It's weird... I honestly want Puzzle Quest 2 more than any other release, but looking at the $10 price tag when I could get a game like Infinity Blade for $6 or Dungeon Hunter 2 and Eternal Legacy for $7... I find myself not willing to pay $10 for PQ2.

They lowered it to 6.99, and at least the iPad version is well worth that. I paid 10 and don't regret it.

Edit: it looks like I had some bad info and it will be 10 bucks, I still think it's an insta buy on the iPad. I'm a match 3 addict and also picked up bejeweled 3 on Mac for 20 bucks, double the price. At least in the short term I am choosing to play pq2 instead, although I like some of the new bejeweled modes like poker.
