CAGiversary!

This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it was getting very close to the 5,000 thread mark, I figured it was time for a reset.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

Apple Game Center
Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games are starting to support this. Currently this only runs on iPod & iPhone, but an update will be coming soon that enables this for iPad users.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center exchange thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs. You can also exchange OpenFeint & Plus+ names there.

Important Notes:

 1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
 2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
 3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
 4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
 5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
 6. Apps can be re-downloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
 7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
 8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
 9. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.
 10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

Why, who is that? I thought they were just a mod here.

I just went through the list of EA iPhone games and couldn't find Heroes of Lore 3. Link plz?

I have a fair amount of dual-stick shooters. Is Guerilla Bob a ton better than Gun Bros or different enough from Age of Zombies or Minigore to warrant a purchase?

I'm late to the party, but Chaos Ring is definitely the best game from a big developer on the appstore. I'm seriously enjoying it, and it runs and looks fantastic even on my second gen Touch.

and yes i think it warrants a purchase at a dollar, compaired to six.
PQ2 is brilliant, and so is Dungeon Raid. PQ2 is a steal at $5. Period.
That's not what all the people complaining about crashes, constant waiting through menus and other delays, etc are saying about PQ2. I think I'll pass.

Dungeon Raid + Battleheart is probably the better use of $6 than putting $5 into a game that seems to be terminally buggy. I say, "terminally" because many of the problems of PQ on iOS were not fixed, either.

At least they're adding retina to PQ2 sometime in the next few weeks for those that did buy it.

Lol. No I was thinking the same thing.

PQ2 iOS (Namco) is published by a completely different company than PQ1 iOS (TransGaming). With that in mind, I am hopeful that the bugs will be addressed. I bought it but haven't played it yet, so I'm not sure how prevalent the bugginess may be yet.

Nostradamus The Last Prophecy – Part 2 is on sale for FREE (http://itunes.apple.com/app/nostradamus-the-last-prophecy/id412858619?mt=8).
Thanks for the heads up...grabbed Scrabble for 99 cents, was hoping for a Dead Space drop as well. On another note, EA announced NBA Jam for iPhone today -- http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/07/nba-jam-confirmed-for-iphone-teaser-video-shows-off-ui/
Scrabble is a mess when it comes to online. It doesn't stay logged into Facebook so I have to log back in every time I launch the app. Most of the time it does this without making me type in my email address and password, but not always. Sometimes I have to type those in AGAIN. Even worse, at one point it just stopped working for online completely, just giving an error every time it tried to log into Facebook. The only solution I found was to delete the app, thus wiping out all data for it, and then reinstalling it. Having said all that, I prefer playing it over the much more solid Words with Friends for two reasons: 3 and 4 player games (why doesn't WWF have this yet???) and real Scrabble rules, including double points for the first word placed, and the real Scrabble board layout. Sigh. I wish they'd fix the bugs. End of rant.

I totally agree with you about Words with Friends the only problem I have with that app is the ads that pop up after you make a move. Lately the ad does not go away and it locks up my game no matter how many times I bang on the "X".

I recommend both S&Ps to anyone who is a fan of Puzzle Quest (tech issues aside). It's a FANTASTIC game and I was sad to see them go off the app store when their publisher went out of business. Buy these games before they get taken off again!

The new Gameloft shooter Shadow Guardian is currently on sale for .99 (http://itunes.apple.com/app/shadow-guardian/id400717781?mt=8).
"A new hero is born. His name is Jason Call, and this game tells his story.

I'm thinking I might pick it up - really enjoyed the Uncharted games, this seems like Gameloft's take on it. Anyone have any experience with the game?
Dude...hell yea! Thanks for the heads-up. I've been wanting this as I am a huge Uncharted fan and would love an iPhone version of it, even if it is a knockoff. I hope it's still $.99 tonight when I get out of class.

I'm pretty sure I'm not the target audience, but Jean's Boutique Deluxe has dropped to FREE for the first time (http://itunes.apple.com/app/jeans-boutique-deluxe/id400627033?mt=8).

I don't recommend any of the Gameloft games (except for Spiderman). But for $0.99, go ahead if you want. Most of them control poorly, have terrible art and voice acting, and are just sluggish, console-like games wanabes that fail to impress.

Zombie Infection plays fine, mostly because it uses the Resident Evil control style where the focus is not on shooting while moving, basically you plant and defend yourself.

Fishing Kings is an AWESOME Gameloft game, glad I got it when it was free. It's a great relaxing time killer when you can't go fishing in this craptastic Northeast weather. I would pay a buck for it if anyone is looking for a good fishing game that emulates the real thing (obviously nothing can be like the real thing, but the mechanics of Fishing Kings is close enough).

Shadow Guardian is also awesome. I've been playing it on my iPhone 4 and have no problems. Again, not mean to replace console games like Uncharted or TR since it's a handheld (the PSP can barely do games better and that's a dedicated gaming system so this is pretty darn top notch in my books), but man are the graphics good and fun gameplay to boot.

No offense Sir Daniel, but have you played any of the Gameloft on-sale games other than Spiderman? Maybe it's your device that has problems playing the games? *shrug*

Yeah, I played a lot of those games when I was a naive, first time user of an iTouch, thinking that the games will be any good. Unfortunately, they weren't. Besides, I don't like to support a developer that's practically stealing other people's work.

"Naive" sounds about right;). As for "stealing" I should be guilty on that charge since all those games are so dirt cheap it feels like I'm stealing.
They are so dirt cheap because that's what they are, dirt cheap console game rip-offs. But if you are ok spending time and money with games of that quality, it's ok I guess.
I kinda agree. I bought Prince of Persia awhile back when it was .99 cents and dear god it was terrible. It was a half assed port with horrible controls and bad camera angles. Also with the small screen it was hard to even see your character at some points.

Now I haven't played a lot of gameloft games but at least for prince of persia to me, I disliked it.

Out of curiosity, what is your top ten list for i-device games that are good and worth paying for?

Definitely (Not any specific order)

- Spider The Secret of Bryce Manor
- Reckless Racing
- Fruit Ninja
- Pix N' Rush
- Hellsing's Fire
- Hook Champ
- The Creeps
- Sigma
- Chaos Rings
- Angry Birds

All of these are games that were designed with the pros and cons of the platform on mind, and don't try to be something that the system can't handle/is not good for.

Gotta disagree on one - Let's Golf 2. It's a pretty solid, fun arcade-style golf game (like Hot Shots Golf). The controls aren't perfect, but I find it better than EA's Tiger Woods Golf.

Unrelated, I've been waiting for Press Your Luck to go on sale...it's $.99 right now!
http://appshopper.com/games/press-your-luck
I've played through two games so far, and it's pretty fun, mainly for the whammies and the animation, despite the really lame trivia. But then again, I'm a sucker for the whammies...

Some of the games you listed are as you call it "stealing" ideas from other games/consoles, even Pix'n Love Rush openly "steals" the look even gameboy and virtual boy now I am not saying that its bad cause the game is fun to play and its gameplay is something like WarioWare. But you know its more of a personal opinion on what someone would call "a good game".

who gives a shit if they are console rip offs of games? Do you see EA or Activision stepping up and making their developers release God of War, Uncharted, Freelancer, Battlefield, etc... on iPhone? No, so these will do just fine. I love Dungeon Hunter on my former Android and am hoping they release that and #2 for this .99 cent sale. Plus, there are millions of devs who straight rip off games for consoles. Call of Duty = Battlefield = Brothers in Arms = Medal of Honor. God of War = Dante's Inferno = Castlevania: LoS = Devil May Cry = Ninja Gaiden. Uncharted = Lara Croft = Just about every adventure game ever made.

I picked up Last Guardian, Hero of Sparta, Spiderman, Shrek Kart, and Star Battalion. For 99 cents, it's a steal. Eternal Legacy would be nice at 99 cents as well if they decide to release that one. We'll see...

There's a big difference Pix'n Love Rush is an original concept that doesn't steal anything from anybody (it's just an homage to old games visually speaking, and the minigames are nothing like those on WW). Gameloft games, on the other hand, copy names, gameplay mechanics, even assets for pete's sake.

I do give a shit. It's a shame that Gameloft has to use ideas and mechanics that other games have established and sell them as if they were the ones that created them.

It's embarrassing how unoriginal they are.

Well the way I see it, by your words, if you are an Uncharted fan then you might as well be a GameLoft fan. They basically ripped off all Lara Croft games and gave it a male lead character. If you are a WW2 shooter fan, then... well nothing more really needs to be said about copying there.

Why do you care? You hate Gameloft that much. You say "homage" but that can also be another word for "stealing" it's all about personal opinion.

Naughty Dog may have "stolen" TR, but they made it as good if not better. Gameloft? God no.

I care because this is not the type of content that I'd like to see on the appstore, and I'm a pro developer person.

There are even reports that Gameloft steals assets and things from other companies and change them just slightly so that they don't get sued.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=421051

It blows my mind how can anyone defend that.

You can't honestly call GameLoft asset thieves just because someone "claims" they were ripped from Starcraft. It's not like Blizzard just releases their source 3D/2D models anyway.

Right now, the only reason I can see that you hate GameLoft games is because you have this vendetta against them because they are more openly obvious to copying other games, whereas the big $60 titles cover it up more (sans WW2 shooters).

Clearly Gameloft makes good titles. Their games get good scores even from IGN (who I think underscore things all the time) and who are really picky when it comes to rip offs. So you saying they are bad games holds no grounds since they obviously get good reviews. You just don't like them out of principle.

Sure, Uncharted was good (I actually didn't care for it, but I won't say it was bad because of that. Obviously people like it), but it was a blatant rip off. I thoroughly enjoy Dungeon Hunter, which is a Diablo clone. Just because you don't like it, purely because you think Gameloft is shady, doesn't mean it isn't a good game and therefore doesn't contend with the likes of other copy-catters. It's a bit of a skewed example considering Uncharted gets like 95/100's, but it's the most obvious example I can think of.

Oh and by the way, I'm also a professional game developer. On a daily basis I deal with artists who ask for influence behind their concepts. Influence is just another way of saying "who should I kind of copy?" It's industry standard to utilize other companies good ideas to better your own. Sure, Gameloft doesn't really take their games to a new level, but keep in mind I doubt they make enough money to take risks like that. Their production values are already way higher than most games on the App Store. I mean I've seen 2D games with crap graphics selling for $3 or $4, whereas I can get a 3D gameloft game with voice acting, cut scenes, and decent sounds for around that price.
It blows my mind how can anyone defend that.
Again its all about matter of personal opinion, you dont like Gameloft good for you I still love you tho :grouphug:. For me I like Gameloft and its many games ;) where's my shield:bouncy:.
