CAGiversary!

This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it was getting very close to the 5,000 thread mark, I figured it was time for a reset.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

Apple Game Center
Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games are starting to support this. Currently this only runs on iPod & iPhone, but an update will be coming soon that enables this for iPad users.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center exchange thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs. You can also exchange OpenFeint & Plus+ names there.

Important Notes:

 1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
 2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
 3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
 4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
 5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
 6. Apps can be re-downloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
 7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
 8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
 9. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.
 10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.
I don't understand. If you download on your iPod Touch at work, the next time you sync it to your home computer, it'll automatically copy over.
This is exactly what I do. If that's not good enough you can always check your purchase history
I don't understand. If you download on your iPod Touch at work, the next time you sync it to your home computer, it'll automatically copy over.
I download the apps to the computer at work. The apps are useless at that computer, but I download the apps just to have them already purchased, because some apps are free for a limited time.

It's just then when I'm back at home, sometimes I forgot which apps I downloaded at work.
New FAAD titles include:
The redesigned Flipstones (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flipstones/id379345229?mt=8
"Flipstones has been totally redesigned, improved, and is officially: AWESOME. It’s so awesome in fact, it has to be officially changed to Flipstones 2.
Flipstones 2 is line-drawing puzzle madness that has you racing to build and destroy stones - it's actually everything you've ever wanted in a game… seriously."

Another match-3 puzzler called BeEarthed (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/beearthed/id369582619?mt=8)
"Play the next generation match-3+ puzzler now!
Lining up bunch of gems has been undeniably fun. But shouldn’t there be more to it than that after years of mind numbing repetition?
Enjoy the same addictive match-3+ core play scheme."

An updated version of TowerMadness (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/towermadness/id316491616?mt=8)
"JUST UPDATED for the holidays with a new soundtrack, FREE new winter maps, and more!
Evil aliens are coming to turn your beloved sheep into intergalactic scarves! Protect the flock using only quick thinking and the arsenal of upgradeable weaponry at your disposal."

Comet is the latest Appventcalendar freebie (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/comet/id339507849?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4)
"Blast your way through space as an unbelievably happy comet!
Space is filled with treats and food for no apparent reason.
Now eat your way through space while dodging sharp asteroids, refrigerators and loads of other strange objects.
How far in to space can you go?"

Blue Hole 3D also drops to FREE for the first time (http://itunes.apple.com/app/blue-hole-3d/id391948990?mt=8)
"Fans of the endless score genre (made popular by Doodle Jump) will definitely like the consistent challenge presented by Blue Hole. It’s a nice looking, fun game that will keep you playing for some time with the addition of unlockable ships. For the the same price as a burger on a dollar menu, this one’s a no brainer."
Thanks for the heads up :)
Am I the only one that finds this game almost unplayable control wise?
Looks great though. :(
Yeah, I gave up after 15min of trying to get the control settings right. Pretty much unplayable with any setting I tried, too bad.
Hmmm, I just got a notice that iBomber Defense has dropped to .99 (http://itunes.apple.com/app/ibomber-defense/id400459168?mt=8). Anyone have any experience with this one? I'm tempted, but it's not like I don't already have a backlog of titles waiting for some playtime. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!
Beat me to it. I've been waiting for this to drop since release and I'm currently downloading it... will leave impressions soon.

Early impressions of iBomber Defense... it crashes... over and over and over again. Yay! A respring has it working. I often forget to do that if I'm having issues.

New early impressions = it's pretty much your standard TD game. I love the visuals (nice and clean) and it has a nice "rewind" features that lets you replay a wave if you mess up (using it locks the ability for the next 3 following waves). $.99 is a good price if you're a fan of TD games... I, personally, can never have too many TD games, so take what I have to say with a grain of salt (preferably sea salt if you own it). iBD also seems to have a nice little campaign with progression and abilities/items that carry over, but I can't be sure since I have only started playing not too long ago.

Really tempted to pick up Catan, but not sure which version. I have iPhone 4 and iPad (just got one for work, woo hoo).

I picked up Infinity Blade and Lego Harry Potter, I might be going down slippery slope of actually *gasp* paying more than $1-2 for a game! I really am enjoying Infinity Blade. Might be a little over-priced for what it is, but it's paving the way for what kind of games might be possible on iOS. I can toss a few bucks in that direction :).

Haha same here...I actually had to pay more than $1-3 for an app! Lol...but I have managed to trade some Wii points for paypal/itunes credit...still trying to gift Wii download games for a couple more apps I want. Id like to grab Harry Potter and Illusia.

I wasn't as impressed on Infinity Blade initially...perhaps b/c of the hype. I still don't like that its the exact same level over and over, but hopefully they add all the extra multiplayer and levels as free updates...tho im sure they wont. That being said, I have now completed about 10 bloodlines and continue to not even start others like Dungeon Hunter 2, Eternal Legacy, Dead Rising, and Puzzle Quest 2...which almost all cost more than Infinity Blade.

infeCCt
(http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/infecct/id337689404?mt=8)
"Train creative thinking with infeCCt, this year's sensational brain training hit!
infeCCt is an addictive, mind bending game that keeps you entertained for hours! Based on research in cognitive and memory psychology, this game is easy to learn, but difficult to master.
Object of the game is to draw a line that covers all the tiles in a given level. It sounds a lot easier than it is - with blocks, intersections and tunnels, there is always exactly one solution. In order to solve each of the numerous and tricky puzzles, you have to think more than one step ahead. But every success also means that your brain can apply previously acquired knowledge to a new situation."

ElementZ (http://itunes.apple.com/app/elementz/id337013874?mt=8#)
"ElementZ, the puzzle game acclaimed on Facebook, is now available on iPhone and iPod Touch!
The concept is quite simple: you have to align at least 3 same color Orbs, gain bonus to make combos and win as many points as possible!
This version contains 3 game modes:
- Blitz: The classic 4 minutes mode
- Endurance: No given time. Be quick and efficient!
- Training: Train to make the biggest combo you can without time limitation."

Doodle Hockey is the latest OpenFeint Free Game of the Day (http://itunes.apple.com/app/doodle-hockey/id358985413?mt=8)
"Play Doodle Hockey in 1 player mode with 6 difficulty options. Play in any level with the normal 1 puck or pick 2 pucks for extra fun. Check out the special effects if you slam the puck into the walls - including flame & smoke trails! Pick 2 player mode to play against a friend on your device.
Tournament Mode is all new in Doodle Hockey. Start at 1 puck Kiddie Mode and advance through all the puck and difficulty options."

Thank you so much for posting this. I'd never heard of ThumbJam before, but after reading the description and reviews, it was an immediate purchase. I just got through dropping almost $1,300 on some new guitar gear (Happy Christmas/Merry Birthday to me), but I'm actually more excited about playing with this .99 download (at least until my new gear shows up). Thanks again!
So I know it's not a game, but if you're interested the CNN app is free today. I can't believe they charge for this normally...

What's the difference between CNN App for iPhone (above) and CNN App on iPhone (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cnn-app-on-iphone/id382250921?mt=8#)? They're both currently free, but I can't tell why they both exist.

EDIT: The for app is US-centric. The on app is the International version. Would have been helpful if they included that in the descriptions.

In for Fallen EP-1. Not sure if I'm going to like it, but for free and with a CAG recommendation, I'll give it a try. Thanks for the heads up!

Symbol6 Redux has a 5-star rating, but is it really that good? Find out for yourself for FREE (http://itunes.apple.com/app/symbol6-redux/id397969134?mt=8)

"The Symbol6 machine is back! Symbol6 Redux is an innovative, colorful puzzle game which offers simple and accessible entertainment with endless replayability.

NON-STOP SHAPE MATCHING FUN
The player takes control of the Symbol6 “machine,” which is a hexagon that houses seven different, movable tiles. Players must drag and match these tiles with the corresponding incoming tiles that appear from the edges of the screen.

EASY TO LEARN BUT CHALLENGING TO MASTER
As players progress through the levels, the speed and number of approaching tiles will increase and challenge the player’s ability to rearrange the tiles and process all the information on the screen."

Sunvox is on sale for $1, down from $5. It's a note tracker and from what I've read, you can transfer files to the free desktop versions for Mac, win & Linux. Plus it's universal. Major win for nerd electronic music composers... That's might be redundant.

I had wondered the same thing before you asked. Thanks for clarifying.
Thanks. This just released today, and I didn't see any mention of a previous charge for it.
The app has been out for over 1 year now. You can see the appshopper price history in the link below. It debuted in september 2010 for 1.99 (and ad-supported) and this is the first time it's become free.

Max Adventure was released and has an intro price of 99 cents. I've played it for half an hour to an hour or so and I think it's a good dual-stick shooter so far, the best thing about it being that it has an adventure mode. I get bored with the endless versions of these games (though it has an endless mode too), so an adventure makes the game more fun. And it wouldn't be much of an adventure if it was just an arena. Rather you're running around towns and have various goals, such as finding children, thus saving them. Some stuff in the environment is destructible too. It has what strikes me as a bit of a Costume Quest vibe to it, which I appreciate too. Various weapon power ups, both temporary you find around and/or appear when destroying stuff, and that you can buy to make permanent (game money, not real, thank goodness!) albeit with limited slots available to you. So far I give it a thumbs up, especially for 99 cents. The only problem I foresee is that some of the levels are longish, and dying means starting the level over. It's not a problem so far, but perhaps later? Anyway, it's worth a buy if you like this kind of stuff:

Oh, and it's universal too, though I've only played it on an iPhone 4 (and yes, it has retina graphics). Game Center as well.

NOVA 2 -- Dec 16th: http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/14/nova-2-evolving-mobile-combat-on-dec-16/

Also, 1st Infinity Blade add on next week -- States that it will be 5 new types of each armor which raises the cap at level 45, as well as a new enemy type. Also states that all add ons are free, "In addition to these smaller packs, there's more substantial content in the works (all for free, no less)." Hopefully this is true! -- http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/14/first-infinity-blade-update-next-week-multiplayer-coming-soon/
