CAGiversary!

This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it was getting very close to the 5,000 thread mark, I figured it was time for a reset.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

Apple Game Center
Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games are starting to support this. Currently this only runs on iPod & iPhone, but an update will be coming soon that enables this for iPad users.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center exchange thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs. You can also exchange OpenFeint & Plus+ names there.

Important Notes:

 1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
 2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
 3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
 4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
 5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
 6. Apps can be re-downloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
 7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
 8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
 9. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.
 10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

Funny, I was trying to buy World of Goo last night and it wouldn't let me because it said it was being adjusted. Awesome timing.

Moar iPad sales prz.

What the heck... I enjoyed the Wii version.

Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Night drops back down to .99 just in time to join everything else that's on sale (http://itunes.apple.com/app/castlevania-puzzle-encore/id380180748?mt=8).
"Take control of Alucard, son of Dracula, and experience Castlevania in a whole new way on the iPhone/
iPod Touch with Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Night! Konami brings you a truly innovative Puzzle-RPG system
Developed exclusively for the iPhone/iPod Touch, an exciting first for the Castlevania series!"

The terrific puzzler Alice in Wonderland – An Adventure Beyond the Mirror is also on sale for .99 (http://itunes.apple.com/app/id349406486?mt=8).
"Hurry, don’t be late! Be one of the first to download the new game inspired by the highly anticipated Disney film from Tim Burton. Play as Alice and solve a series of puzzles with help from the Mad Hatter, White Rabbit and other memorable characters from the movie. Explore a world filled with whimsical settings, optical illusions, challenging puzzles, and formidable adversaries."
I also noticed Ms. Pac-Man is out for the iPad now it's $4.99 as well, hopefully it will go on sale like the rest of the Pac-Man games are.
http://appshopper.com/games/ms-pac-man-for-ipad
If it's anything like the iPhone version I would pass. I love playing Ms. Pac-man in the arcade for the speed of the gameplay. Iphone version slows it down big time and the controls are terrible to the point where it's not even fun.

If you want a half descent iphone pac-man game, stick with Pac-Man CE

Bought Castlevania because I fucking love SOTN and puzzle games. Thanks for the heads up, didn't even know this existed. :D Hmm now I need to get a iTunes card, I am down to $1 of credit left.

I somehow missed this one, but a new, universal, Creeps holiday edition launched yesterday at an introductory sale of .99. The Creeps is one of the best TDs on the platform.

http://itunes.apple.com/app/the-creeps-holiday-edition/id417569839?mt=8

Also, Im sure most will wait for a sale, but NBA Jam is very good. The controls work really well and the graphics are excellent. There is no multiplayer though. I bet it will come via update at some point.

World of Goo for .99 is an absolute must. It is the best version of an outstanding game.

Yeah if CE was universal I would get it for $2.99 and I would get it as is for a dollar but its not. I've read the reviews on the iPhone for ms.pac man and I hope they fixed the issue with the iPad but I wouldn't pay 5 or even 3 for it either. Come on Pac Man and Sonic hop on the 99 cent train.
Thank you Verizon iphone launch for all these great sales.
Speaking of that, it was on my local news that like I think a dozen-two dozen people were camping out since midnight in about 5-10 degree weather for a iPhone. No clue if the Verizon store opened yet .

I don't agree. I really like both Ms. Pac-Man and Pac-Man on my iPhone. And the slow version is the default but you can opt to play it at arcade speed, which is what I do. Use the swipe controls and they work quite well. Remember it's not a joystick. You don't keep your finger on the screen, just rapidly swipe in the direction you want to go and lift up, etc.

I'm definitely in for World of Goo at 99 cents for my future iPad 2. Awesome!

Lastly, NBA Jam, while not on sale, is awesome so far. I haven't played too long, but so far I really love it and think it's easily worth the asking price. Seems like EA pulled out all the stops for this one. It controls and plays great.

I agree that this verizon launch has been great for us CAG.

Dungeon Defenders:First Wave is back to $0.99. I was certainly a hater when I got it the last time it was $0.99, because I could NEVER get it to start, even after the most recent update. However, I did a hard power off and restarted the iPad. I am now hooked on this game.

Disney has marked down a BUNCH of stuff, not just Alice in Wonderland.

On the iPhone, NOTHING is more than $0.99. Most are marked down from $4.99. In for Muppets Animal Drummer and Split/Second.

On the iPad, the 3 universal apps: Tron: Legacy, Toy Story 3: Operation Camouflage and JellyCar 3 are both $0.99.
how deep is nba jam? is there same sort of season mode?
It has the Classic Season mode from the console version. You play teams and unlock stuff along the way based on achievements (it does NOT use Gamecenter). However, I'm not sure it's ever a different order. I think it's always the same order, increasing in difficulty as you go. So it's probably not the same as a "season mode". But don't quote me on it. Then there's a quick play mode where you pick the teams.

It doesn't have the mode where there are power ups and unlike what was first reported, it doesn't have any kind of local multiplayer, which is a bummer, but the fact that it was listed as a feature originally in the NZ app store makes me think that was just delayed and will come as an update, but who can say for sure? In any case the game is fun solo.
how deep is nba jam? is there same sort of season mode?
It has classic campaign and play it now mode. There are about 25 challenges that unlock players/specials, like score 10k points or win a game without shoving. No multiplayer or the new remix mode from the console versions.

Here's toucharcade's review:
I'm just waiting for the day Sir Daniel creates the portable PS3 w/ screen and solar panel so we can all play the best games available and not have to suffer through this utter crap that Apple puts out when we're not at home. I think Spiderman Total Mayhem is THE WORST spiderman game ever... even worse than the Xbox and PS2 spiderman games! I mean seriously? There are more jaggies and clipping and floating physics than any other console spiderman game. *end of sarcasm* Sorry, I had to get that out of my system. I seriously don't understand why Sir Daniel even bothers with the app games since it seems NOTHING will meet his standards when compared to console games. And it's funny the double standard he has for the games he listed as top ten and the games he criticizes when technically they all can fall under the same criticisms. :whistle2:k But I'm not going to go into that since my sig would tell you why.

In the meantime, I am enjoying the heck out of SFIV! :) I enjoy it more than my SSFIV on PS3 sadly. Dimsdale is right about the bluetooth vs mode, it's pretty sweet and quick. Although it didn't seem like there was an option to use wifi, when I started vs with my friend, the game told me to turn off wifi and make sure nothing else was on except for bluetooth.

I'm just mad that my iPhone's touchscreen dpad isn't as good and accurate as my mad catz stick and the buttons don't bounce back as quick. And I'm so annoyed at how the anti-aliasing isn't as good on the iPhone as SSFIV is on my PS3 on my 46" LED tv. And also how the voice acting is horrible and grainy and music is rather tingy compared to my PS3 SSFIV pumping through my home theater. ok REALLY end of sarcasm now. Oh yeh, and being CAG's I wouldn't buy a $100 iTunes giftcard until it's AT LEAST $70 or less, since only a few months ago many of us got the $50 gc from Walmart for only $30. :nottalking: ;)
:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl: +1 to this ;)

The other thing missing from NBA Jam, but I guess we expect this from EA now: it doesn't support Gamecenter. Lots of in-game achievements, but no Gamecenter. Still, it's a great game and definitely worth considering even at full price.

Also perhaps worth a download is the free game from The Behemoth, the makers of Castle Crashers (XBLA), Super Soviet Missile Mastar. It's basically an avoidance game, but humorous and with uber blocky white on red graphics. Like from some console before the Atari 2600. A Soviet one. It's fun-ish, but I can't help be wonder why The Behemoth didn't take the platform seriously and produce a real game... like EA has done. Still, you might as well download it for free. It will give you a few minutes of fun, at least, and might even prove addicting: http://appshopper.com/games/super-soviet-missile-mastar. Unlike NBA Jam, it *does* support Gamecenter for leaderboards and achievements.

FYI, you *are* supposed to smash into the blocky depiction of the USA that's at the end of each level. Obviously!

Bought Ace Attorney for 99 cents on iTunes last night!

Oh and GTA China Town Wars is like $5.99 too much right now.

Anybody know if Cooking Mama will go down? Because it's been way up there and hasn't gone down yet!
Since RE4 is $0.99 can anyone comment on it for iPad? Is it really RE4 or some watered down version that sucks?
RE4 is absolutely god-awful (don't believe some kid if he pops out and says "it's good!")

Don't get it. I got it for a buck a couple months ago and thought it was terrrible. It's not even a "port" if you want to call it that, it's just a boring shooter that looks bad and plays worse.

I also got Street Fighter 4. MEH. It has the look of a SF game, but it's the absolutely bare minimum of it: devoid of any strategy or depth and it all boils down to a virtual button masher. For a buck it's ok, but I never would have paid the full price this game was back then.

Obviously it's going to lack the depth of console/arcade SFIV, but I found it to be pretty fun and worth the asking price (when I bought it, it was $6.99).

I would dl and try the iphone lite version on your iPad to see if you like it. I would think gameplay is the same, just uprez'ed graphics.

This is the first time ever RE4 for iPad has been a buck. I don't think RE4 for iPad has ever been a buck since it debuted on the app store.

EDIT: THANK YOU A MILLION SHRIKE!!!!! :applause:

Seriously, to anyone listening to his advice. Don't. If anyone took your opinion on games put out on the app store, there would only be like 5 successful apps on the entire thing. You are the pickiest gamer I have ever seen. Why do you even buy app store games? Hell, why do you even own an iPod Touch or iPhone? You clearly hate the system. I've pretty much come to the conclusion that there is no way in hell you are a "pro game dev." If you were, you'd realize the kind of limitations and sacrifices that needed to be made to make RE4 and SF4 on an iDevice.

People. Don't listen to Fortesque. You will forgo enjoying good and even decent games because of his negative attitude towards iGaming.

oh SNAP! lol I was wondering that myself. I'm all for good games even if it's copying ideas from other successful games, after all, that's how most entertainment products survive, taking an established successful concept and slapping on another coat of paint. More importantly, this is how actual professional game developers and movie writers survive and pay the rent! With that said, I think it's childish and naive to think that a small phone/portable device could or rather SHOULD have games that look and play as well or better than any console counterpart.

I enjoy SFIV for a buck because I think it's the best portable SFIV experience around and I understand that it's not going to be the same as my console version or the arcades. I enjoy Shadow Guardian because it will be the closest Tomb Raider/Uncharted action I will have while on the train on my daily commute. Until someone figures out how to make my 46" tv and PS3 portable without giving me a hernia and emulate the experience EXACTLY, I will be super happy to pay $0.99 for these great mobile version games... I'm even on the edge about spending over a buck for nba jam after reading all the great reviews...

That's pathetic. I don't take shit that developers throw at me and pretend to be happy with it. If you are the type of person who enjoys mediocre games, good for you buddy. I'm not that person, and I'm giving honest opinions backing up my arguments.

I don't have iDevice games. I hate bad games.

Get over it.

By the way jjz203, I'm still waiting for that post you said you were writing the other day. What, did you realize that you couldn't come up with anything to counter-argue my point? Are you still going to hide behind other people's comments?

You just totally toppled your own high horse. Look up a few posts where it says you bought RE4 for a buck a few months ago and look up a few sentences that says "I don't have iDevice games." That's all the logic I need. Anyone else feel like Firethief made a new profile? Check my sig. Back to deals.

So, what are you talking about right now? I don't get it. What logic can you have friend.

No worries. I'm not arguing with Daniel anymore (he avoided nearly 3 paragraphs of arguments, so I consider that a win on my part anyway ). I just wanted to warn other people that about Daniel's reviews.

Panzer Panic is free today. Looks like one of those sketch styled games. Dunno if it's any good. Free is free tho

Arguments that you tried to back up using IGN scores as a fact. You definitely "won" that debate, champ!

If anyone remotely likes fighting games I easily suggest and recommend Street Fighter 4. I bought it back when it first had a sale for $7 and its one of the only games I have bought that expensive and still feel it was worth every penny. For a buck that is nearly a steal. If you are a fighting game fan like myself, you will realize that it has alot of depth to it for what a mobile device like your PHONE can provide. And you have to be really cheap to not even try such a great game for a dollar.

Whatever you say boss. I guess it makes sense that your opinions are equal to that of a professional critic. I didn't see you using any hard evidence, ever. Btw, I never said they were "fact." I said they were a "stat."

I want the effin Gameloft 14th deal to start already >_

7th Guest is too classic to pass up.

Sir Dan: I see you points. You don't want cheap, inferior console ports on iPhone. We'd all rather eat pizza than Pizza Combos. But we can't stick a real, hot, fresh pizza in our pocket.

But with your combativeness and negativity, you're painting yourself as a dick. We've all found ourselves the unwitting bad guy of a CAG post or two. Drop your arguments, tone down the negativity and it'll all blow over.

Street Fighter 4 is a damn great game, I have shown it off to a couple other friends that don't own an iPhone (android user) and they are jealous. It killed them even more when I told them I bought it for a $.99.

I also picked up Legendary War, have not had time to play it since work has been crazy today. I do hear nice things about it.

As for s. Daniel I dont pay much attention to negative nellies like him.
So 7th guest was on sale for an hour?
Yeah, no kidding. Just logged onto iTunes on my PC, and stared at the screen like a dog when you try to battle-rap with it.

59 with the addition of RE4.
Would have grabbed 7th guest as well but missed it.
