Is anyone importing a Dual Shock 3?
If you want a wired controller, just buy an extra long USB cable from monoprice for cheap. It's been confirmed that the PS3 controllers will send their information over the cable instead of wireless when plugged in.

Rumble can actually add a lot to games, especially in the area of immediate tactile feedback. What's easier to interpret when you get hit, some vague red flash on screen, or the controller shaking. The controller shake is much more easily recognized becsause it's a tactile sensation. In games, your visual processing is dedicated to things like finding the enemy, aiming, etc... In heated battles, it can be difficult to switch your focus from the fight to interpreting red flashes on screen to see where you've been hit from.

But that's just one use, there's a lot more cooler uses, or simpler uses that directly help gameplay. But namely rumble can be used to replace an on screen indicator that would otherwise crowd the screen, and does this in a way that engages your sense of touch, leaving your other senses able to focus on the game.

This is why I was hoping Sony went ahead and licensed Immersion's TouchSense technology for the DualShock3. The description and actual hands on comments sounded very cool. The system was powerful enough to do some very subtle vibrations, low level hums that could simulate holding powerful objects like a lightsaber or magic sword. It could also handle more localized rumbles, you'll feel the rumbles pushing in a certain direction to more easily find where you're being shot at from.

The technology is starting to be put into other devices like phones and other hand held devices, the tiny subtle vibrations it gives help users know when they've done something. Kind of like how the Wii remote vibrates ever so slightly when you point the curser over a button. Imagine in a game where the controller gave you a subtle vibration when you pointed to an object of interest, maybe a hidden wall, or something. While it's not a whiz bang amazing effect, if used properly rumble technology can add a lot to games.

Alas, it doesn't look like Sony went for the TouchSense technology, I think they needed to cut costs, or it could have something to do with MS' lawsuit against Immersion where MS made a deal with Immersion that they wouldn't license their tech to Sony.
I understand the thought, but why would it shake when holding something like a powerful sword or lightsaber. I'm pretty sure no really powerful weapon should just have minor vibrations when using it, otherwise it'd be very deadly to even the person who wielded it. At least in that regards, a projectile weapon is a bit different than something like a sword.
As far as I know, HS, and F1 don't have them yet.

Warhawk should get it in the next patch.
Oh, that would explain it. The IGN article confused me. I thought the list they put up was a list of games with title updates that took advantage of rumble, not a list of games that will have rumble in the future.

I'm confused, I thought I read(like 2 months ago) somewhere saying it does use the TouchSense. I also read that the rumble was stronger than the ps2/360.

Could it be that the games aren't using the rumbles full power?

Immersion wanted to use touchsense, but I don't think Sony wanted that tech.
NOTE: The following is my rant, but it honestly isn't /that/ big of a deal to me.

Has anyone confirmed that the controller will /function/ if the internal battery is completely dead and won't hold a charge? That is my concern: some day in the not so distant future, the embedded internal battery will die, and I''ll /have/ to replace it.

So, I'm worried about the BATTERY. I'm worried about throwing away a battery that I never actually used. I'm worried that I'll have to buy ANOTHER battery that I don't even want, or have to buy a whole new controller.
.
You can unscrew the controller and take the batterie out. You can replace them for pretty cheap. http://www.cellphoneshop.net/baforsopl3si.html so I wouldn't worry about it

I just ordered a black Dual Shock 3 from Play Asia. $70.20 total. Kind of crazy, but I haven't opened my Uncharted yet and I kind of want the rumble.

Sadly, I'm sure the DS3 won't move the left analog stick where it's supposed to go, nor will it fix the terrible 'dead zone' all Sony analog controls have; but I'm really looking forward to having a control that doesn't feel like paper in my hands.

I just ordered 2 on EBAY for $110 bucks for 2! Go search it on ebay and its a Buy it Now or Best Offer and put $110.00 and he'll accept.

I don't see him on ebay.

I've been using it with different games. It's nice to have it.
I've noticed the rumble is definitely not as strong as the PS2 dual shock, except on Blazing Angels, where it's incredibly strong.

Still nice to have though.

I got one for $60.

Meh, figured it wasn't bad. It'd be about $55 with tax here (unless I bought it online from amazon or something) and I got it way ahead of time compared to when it will be released here so the extra $5 or $10 (depending on how you look at it) was worth it to me.

Got two in Japan for $45 each in a little video game store in Akihabara! I got the white one of course since they won't have them in the US for a LONG time I bet.

My hookup in Japan (buddies g/f which I mentioned earlier) has been unable to find them in the stores near her. I am not sure how hard she looked, but now I have to resort to hoping to get one for $60 off ebay.

Importing this controller for this price is a bit ridiculous IMO, but there really is no alternative solution :/

Is there any tangible evidence as to when it would be coming stateside? Why would they take so long to get it over here? ~:/

I'll sell you one for $62 bucks shipped if you want, I dont really need two :)

it was $124 for both shipped.

Being patient is not an alternative for gamers right ;)?

It's supposd to come in spring, I believe. April or May.

Just got an email from Play Asia saying these dropped to $60. Still kind of expensive, although I wonder how much cheaper white ones are going to get. I'll probably wait to see if there are any deals when they come out in the US, and then decide how much the white premium is worth.

the play-asia thread has 8 off 50.
so u can get a DS3 for 58.xx

good deal assuming the DS3 will launch at 49.99.
thats just $5 more then with tax.
:D

i placed an order today, will give a review cannot wait.

its a lot heavier than the SIXAXIS

kind of weird since i got used to how light it was, to all of a sudden have something that heavy in your hands

other than the dualshock 3 badging and a black plastic (the sixaxis is see through if you hold it up to light) they look identical

Yeah, I'm gonna have to bite on the white DS3 for under $60 shipped from Play-Asia. $8 for white is a good deal. The only thing that would make it better is if the buttons and sticks were also white.

Or if Play-Asia hadn't started throwing 500s literally right when I hit "add to cart."

I think I'm gonna order a black one this week when I get paid.

How long did it take to recieve from them? I'm in Canada, but shipping time should be comparable to the US.

I got sick of farting around on ebay, and waiting for a $8 off coupon. I used a 12 off 100 coupon (which are way more abundant), and bought two. When you buy two, it makes sense to use UPS shipping, as it is only a couple bucks more per controller. Thus I should get my order in 4 days. I'll just find a buddy to sell the second controller to. Came to $65 shipped (1-4 day shipping), per controller. They will likely be $60 CAD+tax when they come to Canada, which would put them around $70 CAD. So the $65 USD (about $66 CAD) is a pretty good deal, escpecially when I get it 3 months early.

Hopefully Play Asia lives up to the 'usually ships within 24 hours' as my R&C should be arriving this week.

isnt play asia in china? i highly doubt itll come in 4 days, maybe 8.
guys dont forget the $8 off 50 coupon. just a reminder.

dam mine hasnt even shipped yet.
Wow. I ordered one last night and one hour later it had shipped.

I bit the bullet and ordered a white one with the $5 coupon floating around. $61 shipped. Not bad. About what it will cost here whenever they decide to release it.
Wow. I ordered on last night and one hour later it had shipped.
didnt check the site, thought they sent emails. it shipped the same as yours dec 10.
lol

Mine shipped about 7 hours after I ordered. 2 hours after that it showed in transit to Louisville, USA. I am assuming that is the one in Kentucky.

I just hope I don't get nailed with duty as it crosses US border.

i find it slightly odd the PS button is slightly different on the DS3

its not as profound (meaning it doesn't stick out as much, thus be pressed in as far as on the normal sixaxis, just a different feel to it is all, not sure if i like it, probably has to do with the innards that the press cant go as far, idk.)

..has anyone else noticed this with their DS3's? Or is it just mine? (or do i have a weird sixaxis from launch haha)

I'm going to America in two days and will be taking back with me a White DS3 for about $45-47. Too bad I couldn't find anyone to sell these to in America. I thought there'd be more of a demand.
Oh well, if anyone is in Chicago and wants some Japanese PSN cards from Japan, I'll be leaving for O'hare the day after they get released. Let me know. I won't charge much more. They're selling in 3,000 and 5,000 yen increments. That's about $26 and $44 or so. PM me if you are interested.
I hope the flight cancellations stop.

Does anyone have a guess as to when the new controllers will be bundled with the PS3? I have to return my PS3 60 to Amazon due to a glitch, and I'm considering waiting on getting a PS3 80 until the dual shock is bundled in.

who knows? bet u it wont be for a long time,
supposedly theyre gonna have the DS3 in "early 2008"
ten bucks says they wont bundle them for a while since most people want two controllers already.

Honestly, I've been using my DS3 from the get-go. The "regular" Six-Axis controller just feels really fragile in my hand, comparatively.

Works great on the Burnout demo!

I'm kind of confused by your post. I wasn't knocking it, I was just asking if the PS button feels different on anyone else's DS3 compared to the regular SIXAXIS.

Like you I've been solely using my DS3 (though when that dies I'll let that charge and use my SIXAXIS if it's a game that doesn't have rumble like NHL 08).

I just got a shipping notice email from play-asia saying it shipped on the 10th. Are they always, this on top of things?
