is Battlefield 2 SUPPOSED to load this slow?

Err so yeah after upgrading my PC I figured I'd try out battlefield to see how it goes. And Loading times are WORSE than even before. How is it possible that this game has been out for so long (I bought it at Launch) and now it's in a worse state than when I originally played it? First off the GUI interface lags more than the game which is amusing in of itself.

But to load a map it takes forever........... like 5-10 minutes or something.......
and this new pc isn't a slouch either

8800GTS, E6600 Core 2 Duo overclocked @ 3.12Ghz, 2GB DDR800 memory oced to 860.... and it still loads like crap.

Frickin DiCe, never buying another battlefield game again.
but yeah, if anyone has tips on how I might make it load faster...

In my experience it's nothing to do with your pc hardware and everything to do with keeping EVERYTHING updated or else it will hang. Then there's the fact it's made by EA...

Pretty much. Even BF1942 maps were slow to load...it just got worse with BF2.

I'm so impatient that I'll intentionally play another game because I don't feel like waiting for BF2 to load. Just launching BF2 is frustrating, between the long map loads, the dumbass ads, and the clunky interface.

There are no ads in 2 unless you mean the updates prompting you about the expansions to the game. 2 always has taken a long time to load, usually about 60 to 90 seconds to load a map for me. 2142 is much better with regards to load times and they are cut in half.

I consider the EA splash to be an ad

There's probably a way to get rid of it though

i posted this awhile back here when I got the complete collection a few weeks back. The slow map loading times really turn me off. Wasted 40 bucks to watch this thing sit there and take 6 minutes to load. I can understand if the graphics were state of the art, but when I saw it I was like wHAT THE fuck!?!?? BF2142 loads a lot faster then this.

You'd think after so many patches and expansions it would be faster to load this time around?

Well, my biggest issue is that I swear it loads SLOWER than it did when the game first came out. Usually u'd expect patches to fix crap.

But then again the GUI runs slower than the game, and I wouldn't blame EA. This is purely on DiCE.

I just built a new rig as well. Not as stout as yours. 7950GT OC, 4800+, 2gb DDR800 and a 80GB SATA HD.

Without overclocking anything, I would say it takes approx 2-3 Minutes from launching the game, to logging in, to being in an online map playing. It sounds like something is wrong with your setup. Make sure you have the latest BF2 patch. Also, there is a guide for speeding up BF2 on tweakguides.com I haven't done it yet, but plan to. You can do all kinds of tweaks including get rid of the intro movies, which will save you a bit of time.

I originally bought BF2 at launch and didn't like all the vehicles, but now that I have rebuilt another rig, I re-installed it cause they have maps without the vehicles. I am actually enjoying it. :) Good luck with your setup. One other thing is to be sure you have the latest drivers from NVidia. Never use the drivers from the card Manufacturer, get the Video and Mainboard drivers from NVidia.com
