Is beatmania worth buying?

I kind of want to play one of those music gamesfor PS2, but not DDR, the crazy techno thing just annoys me, but is beatmania any different? music-wise? I saw the big pad and that was kinda cool, but I just want a 2nd, 3rd, and 100th opinion on the music in this game, and how fun it is. It's only 39.99 at a gamestop where Im at, so I might pick it up.

At that price, definitely grab it, if just for the controller alone. You might find you really like it, and if so, you might want to upgrade to some of the import Beatmania IIDX games.

Also, with a little work and a PS2-to-USB adapter, you can use the controller to play Beatmania simulators, and PC DJ games like DJMax. But that's getting ahead of ourselves. I'd say go for it.
There's always guitar hero... Personally, I think that's the best overall accepted rhythm game for ps2.
At the moment, yeah. You could also try to find Taiko Drum Master on the cheap from somewhere. That's also a fun music game with a bit more oomph to it then Beatmania. Beatmania is something you might want to pass on until it drops another $10-15.

Beatmania is crazy j-pop/techno so you'll probably hate it.

Yeah, if I can remember correctly, most of the songs from beatmania (only played 3rd mix) are basically hip hop/even more techno versions of ddr songs. I also agree that you should just wait for an even greater price drop, I really don't think that kind of rhythm game is worth exactly 40, though the controller is pretty cool. It's not that rare I'd say so no need to worry about those jpop/hiphop otakus taking all the beatmania bundles.

I so wanted to enjoy Beatmania but really couldn't. Not only is the music not very good, but most of the songs are incredibly short. Added to that is its insane difficulty level. I bought the game the day it came out and ended up selling it to a CAG here like a week later. If you want a music game, do yourself a favor and buy Guitar Hero.
only if you can import and get the japanese games. The music is bad in the us version.
Yep, came in here to say this exact same thing.

I almost gave up on Beatmania after only playing the shitty US version... I'm glad I didn't.

thanks guys, I ended up picking up guitar hero at Kmart for the same price of 39.99 and I love it :].. Its weird playing left handed though.
