Is Beyond the Beyond any good and should I go and get it?

CAGiversary!
Just got back from my Gamecrazy hoping to get in on their B2G1 sale, but didn't really see anything interesting (mostly the same old stuff, i.e. sports games and other action titles that aren't really that good, but I did see a complete SH: C that was way too much for my tastes (missed out on the SH: C 19.99 at EB not too long ago because I had to be out of town)), but I did find right as I was leaving a mint complete Beyond the Beyond with the original double single case. It was priced at 14.99. I had the employee that I know there put it on hold, but I'm not sure if it is any good. I always hear that it is one of those classic early PSone RPGs and I always see it online at EBgames.com, but is it any good? What does it play like? Is it a tough find and is this a good price for it or should I just save up my money?

Edit thought of some more questions: How's the story aspect of the game? Could you guy's compare it some other RPGs, maybe?

It's pretty bad as far as RPGs go. You get 4 guys and they just kill other guys. There's nothing really interesting or fun about it really, probably not worth $15.

this game is good, but not great, if you like old school rpgs, its for you.
$10 and under, you cant lose, over 10, id do some research first and make sure its for me, i presonally liked this, but cant say that i played it in 8 years or so...

I'd say you can lose for $10. I'd rank it along with games such as Azure Dreams (minus it being fun) and Granstream Saga.

Interesting for the point of completion or whatnot, but all in all it wasn't a very good RPG. Instant-death attacks and spells with nearly 60% to 70% accuracy aren't that much fun, particularly when used against your party as soon as four hours into the game.

However, if you don't mind spending a lot of time leveling and quite a bit of time cursing, the game is fairly interesting. Just a few warnings, though...

1) The game has a penchant for telling you what to do and then never telling you what your objective is again. It's either that or they will be quite vague as to where you are supposed to go next.

2) Quite a few of the dungeons are not only long but are horribly tortuous as well. Plan to bring in lots of healing items.

3) For stat-raising items, think long and hard before using them. The game only seems to have so many and, while the effects are amazing, you should really save them for particular characters.

4) There is a great deal of amazing hidden things in the game. Problem is that the game makes no mention of them whatsoever in any way, shape, or form. For hidden characters, that's somewhat understandable. For things like the best spell of the game (which makes the game somewhat playable near the end)...well, that's just painful.

Still, for $15 it could be right up your alley. It's a way of seeing how Camelot used some interesting ideas in BtB and then really expanded upon them in Golden Sun many years later.

Don't forget that you have a limited inventory. Severly limited.

Wasn't this the first RPG out for playstation? If so you might want it for that reason. I thought it was a terrible game though, but maybe only because I was playing suikoden around the same time I tried playing this.

I think it was the first one, although Vandel Hearts came out soon afterward. Now that was a great game.

I would skip it. The graphics were ugly. Since it's from camelot, the battles were animated cut scenes(which was the coolest thing going for it) like in Shining force(strangely if my memory serves me - BtB looked worse than ShF) or camelot's other series golden sun.

I remember renting this back when it first came out, being excited an RPG was on playstation...1 hour later i returned it to the video store and got something else instead. I wouldn't buy it.

I own it, but I don't plan on ever playing through it. It's not horrible, but there are hundreds of better games you could spend your time and money on. Unless you're a big RPG fan/collector, I'd recommend passing.

Save your money, as far as RPGs go, this is a game on the mediocre list. The plot is a pretty standard RPG story and the combat gets repetitive real quick. That's why EB always has it in stock, cause people know to stay away from it.

No, Suikoden was the first RPG out for the playstation in NA. BtB was not the first RPG for any region.

BtB only came out 1-2 months after Suikoden in NA.

BtB was very bad IMHO. It came out when there was a drought of RPG out and I still could not make myself finish it.
