So I'm thinking of buying Half Life 1 from work but I was wondering if the Counter-Strike mod is still available for download free online.

And if it is, will I be able to play online (since I will have a CD Key from the Half Life 1 install)?

Thanks.

Yes, the original Counter Strike is free (v1.5). You will need to download Steam and when you activate your CD Key you will have access to Half Life, Counter Strike, and some other I think.

What if the Half Life 1 disc I am going to buy is one of the older discs... which doesn't have STEAM built into it. Its still a new game though. Its the jewel case version.

Edit: Corrected sentence error.

As long as the key isn't activated, it will work. You enter the CD Key into Steam and it downloads the client for you. You do not need to install Half Life from the CD.

Cool. Does one get any more free downloads when the serial key is entered? Like HL Deathmatch, Opposing Force, blue shift? or do those have to be purchased, if they dont already come with the HL disc?

I bought the half life anthology from steam a while back. I got opposing force and blue shift with it. Im pretty sure those will be in your account as well.

Im pretty sure you'll get HL Deathmatch, Im not sure about the other though.

It depends on the version of the CD you buy.

Original Package Version: Access to HL and all MODS. (No Expansions.)

GOTY: Access to HL and all MODS.

Either expansion: Access to Expansion and MODS.

Counter-Strike: Access to HL and all MODS.

Day of Defeat: Access to HL and all MODS.

Half-life Anthology: Access to HL, all expansions and Team Fortress Classic.

Counter Strike Anthology: Access to CS, DoD and some other stuff.

It's confusing and damn annoying, to be honest.

1.6, u can also go play team fortress or HALF LIFE DEATHMATCH
Both CS and CS:S are absolutely free a long as you have any version of their corresponding HL game...
no...i bought half life 2 off of steam and cs source didnt come with it...you have to buy the boxed versions of the half life games

You are mistaken.

ALL versions come/came with it, even the HL2 Bronze version.

no........it came with HL2 and HL2 lost cost
Correct. No CS, no DoD.
man, i bought it just for the orginal CS. I bought it last year at CC during black friday. I think it was 4.99. i opened it but didnt install.

To make sure I understand this, Counter-Strike is free over Steam to anyone with a valid key who buys any version of Half Life, such as the Anthology?

If this is true, then I'll definitely keep my Anthology because the part that bothered me compared to the Platinum edition was that it was missing CS more so than Steam was required. I just bought HL2 and HL2 Ep1, so I'll have to live with Steam anyway.

Since CS is free with the Anthology, does anyone know why the Anthology package doesn't list CS? If it's free over Steam, you'd think they'd want to list it as a selling point or why not just include CS in the first place so there's less downloading over Steam required?

If you have a valid Half Life key, which I assume the Anthology is, then you can download CS for free. If you have a valid HL2 key, you can download CS:S for free, at least that was the case with my key.

Technique, I hope that's correct. After posting my question here, I read a couple other Counter-Strike threads and one of the posts dated January 2006 said this:

From http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82265

"CS is no longer free with Half Life. If you purchase an old version of HL (The GOTY edition, original edition, etc), you are allowed to d/l CS and DoD for free, but if you purchase a new edition of the game (Steam download, Half Life Anthology) you are NOT authorized to download and play the mods.

I found this out when I picked up a copy of the Anthology at chrismas for 5 bucks for the distinct purpose of playing DoD again, and I couldn't. =\ It's a stupid system designed to get you to shell out money for the Counter Strike Anthology."

Given that there are mixed opinions (though the majority favors that CS should be free with the Anthology), has anyone recently bought HL Anthology and tried to get Counter-Strike over Steam for free?

Yeah, I forgot to mention that online versions purchased from Steam don't come with CS for free, which sucks. I'm not sure about that Anthology though, is it multiple keys or just one?

I've got the Half-Life Anthology. It's just one CD and one key. It does not allow you to play Counter-Strike, you have to purchase that separate.

Thanks for the clarifications on the HL Anthology. Since it does not include a free download of Counter-Strike via Steam, I'll probably return the HL Anthology (unopened) and try to get the HL Platinum Edition someday.

Instead of getting me to buy the CS Anthology separately, Valve's strategy of being greedy and starting to charge for CS with the HL Anthology will cause me to not buy either the HL or CS anthologies.

I don't blame you, it's a very shady tactic to start charging for something that was originally a free mod. The only reason I picked up the HL Anthology is because it was $5 the day after Thanksgiving.
I just love how I got my HL key by basically copying and pasting random parts of the cd-key from a keygen.
Haha I got mine from a key generator also, my friend was just giving out random keys and one of them actually worked!

i got my keys from the half life packages at school, lol. originals so i get half life, cs, dod, team fortress, and all the other games. had like 5 keys, but i think i used 3 already. the other 2 should still work. anyone wanna trade for a cs:source code?

Wow guys, way to go off and wonder if the Anthology comes with CS when I flat out said it didn't. This is why we read the first page of a thread.

If you want a copy of CS for cheap, either find an EB with used PC games left or go to a place that wont do much PC sales (K-mart, Walmart, etc) and find one of the very old HL versions.

haha, I'm moving tomorrow...all my systems are packed up and I'm bored so decided to DL Condition Zero from Steam and I forgot how much fun this game is.

I suck ass though! Even in single player mode :p of course, I only played the xbox version before.

do you actually buy games? wow,... i guess i am stupid, since i buy games.

CS anthology is supposed to contain DoD right??!! Well mine only contains CS:CZ, CS, Deathmatch Classic, HL pre-loaded, CZ deleted scenes and Ricochet. DoD is missing? Can i solve that problem?

wel... i installed my copy of HL normally and was wondering why it wasnt working with steam so thanks for this article much appreciated :)

but it is annoying that you have to dl it from steam after the CD key... shoiuld be able to install it and have it register with steam afterwards but meh... shit happens

i picked up and old copy of GOTY a few years back now and only wanted to install it to play CS but when i registered i was able to DL

CS, DOD, DC, BS, OF, Richochet and TF if thats any info for anyone... seems the best ver to buy really is the GOTY edition... that is if you can find it anymore

I seem to remember a few years back when Valve made Blue Shift available on Steam to all people who owned Half-Life, which I guess they still do (along with Opposing Force). Day of Defeat, Team Fortress Classic, Death Match Classic, Richochet, Counter-Strike, and Half-Life Deathmatch were always free with HL, so that's why you get them over Steam free as well.

Looks like Gogamer still has a version of HL for $16, but if you do some looking, it can probably be bought for $10 or less. Actually, I think Gogamer has deals on the Anthology for around $7 every so often.

Wow, old thread resurrection. It's relevant again though. My Orange Box (retail) key didn't give me CS:S unfortunately. I've never played any of the CS games so I was sort of hoping it would.

Orange Box gives you HL2, Episodes 1 and 2, Portal, TF2, and Peggle Extreme. To get CS: Source you either have to buy a boxed version of HL2 or one of the packages from Steam that includes it.

yeah but i dont recomend goin for anthology i dont think you get CS free with that but i may be wrong?? ne1 know for sure?

It's pretty absurd if there's any version floating about that doesn't give you CS for free on Steam if you buy HL, considering the original non-Steam version of CS was a free mod.

I was really addicted to the old CS, and I wanted to get into CS:S since I have a new computer that can finally run it (sad I know.) I just don't want to have to buy HL2 a second time, since I have The Orange Box for the 360.

I am playing Half Life (Anthology version) and got stuck in the blast pit area. The giant fan, which is supposed to propel me upward to an airshaft, doesnt do squat. I tried turning it off and on again, nothing. I just drop into the spinning fan blades regardless of where I jump from. Anybody else have this problem?
