Is it worth getting a 360 if I don't get Live?

Nephlabobo

CAGiversary!
I asked Shipwreck and he didn't answer (!) so I'll throw the topic out here.

Eventually, I do plan on getting a 360 as there are games I want on it.

I'm not interested in Live though. I don't care about online play and I don't care about achivements.

So...the question is is it even worth getting a 360 if you don't plan on getting Xbox Live? Or do I have to get it?

I'm just worried that I'll buy one, not get Live and suddenly won't be able to play a new game because I don't have a software update.

It's one thing that will factor into my decision. If I'm forced to get Live just for software patches just to play the games, then I won't bother with getting one.

I don't think you have to have live, I do, but I only have the silver membership anyway. Plenty of good games to play on the 360.

Yes. There are plenty of great single player games. Oblivion, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Half-life 2 and Portal in the Orange Box, Condemned etc. etc.

Most online games have good single player games as well.

The simpliest answer is you only need to pay for Live if you want to play online. Silver membership is free. Certain downloads are locked for Gold only for a week or so though. Other than that you have access to pretty much everything else any other 360 user has.

You need a profile to save games, it can be an offline profile, but unless you just don't have a way of getting internet to your 360, it doesn't make sense not to at least go for the free silver membership to xbox live.

Then you can get any software updates that are released like for the dashboard to add new features and to patch games, as well as download demos to try out games and it doesn't cost you a thing.

Silver is free, and that's all that I use. I don't play at all online, just use it for demos and what not.

You will need a connection as some games will NOT play without a required update. You will also need the connection for backwards compatibility updates.

Isn't the update contained on the disc if it needs it to play? I am pretty sure it works just like the PSP UMDs. I could be wrong though. I just have never heard of someone being locked out of playing a game due to it needing to update. Please inform me and the OP if you know something.

I seem to recall when I got Tomb Raider that it wouldn't play without a required update. I didn't have the box connected to the internet at the time, and I *think* that it wouldn't play. Now that I am connected, its not a problem.

Please don't hold me to this...its just what I recall.

You can download the backwards-compatibility update, burn it on a CD, and install it that way. But connecting is definitely suggested.

360 is quite worth it, even without live. However, I suggest you wait a bit. We're still reeling from great releases from the holiday season, and if you wait a bit, there may be good price drops on those titles. If you can't wait though, it's not a bad choice.

There are lots of great games for the 360 and you DO NOT NEED to be on LIVE unless you want. LIVE is not required for updates to play games, if your 360 needs updated it will be on the game disc and you will be asked to install it before you can play.

If this was a XBox 1 question I would probably say "No" but since the launch of the 360 there have been plenty of good offline single player games, where as it took the XBox 1 awhile to gain in that respect. You don't need Live to enjoy the 360, but most FPSes will only be enhanced by having live.

Well, if the silver is free (which I didn't know about), then that's all I need.

Thanks for the info.

I will likely be picking one up around my birthday in August.

As Wombat noted, the new 360s should be off the assembly line in June or July, so I'll pick one up then.

Thanks again.

I stand corrected....good to have accurate advice for the OP.
I thought I was the only one in the world that doesn't have a 360 hooked up online.
You won't be once I get mine!

And this thread has been helpful, thanks.

xbl is a whole 'nother experience, but there are some good games not live, i went 3 weeks without xbl, and i eventually decided i want a gold membership again even though i dont even play my 360 on live that much

IMO the 360 is the best system out right now, i dont plan on getting a PS3, and the only thing my wii is used for is 1st party games

there are some VERY fun games on the xbla. which you can grab with a silver account.
enjoy your 360, i absolutely love mine.

Is it worth getting a 360 if you don't get live?

Answer: Barely.

But it's obvious that you, like many others, don't quite understand what live provides. You get most of it for free anyway. You really need to try it out at least for a little while before you decide you hate it.

Oh and you will get achievements regardless of having live or not.

I don't even have Gold at the moment. 'Been living off 48 hour codes since my membership expired last week.

It's only necessary if you like playing online, obviously. Lately I just don't have the time.

I rarely use my 360 for online play, so in effect I rarely use the live service. It depends on what you want to use the 360 for. I use mine as my tv box (with vista ultimate as the tv tuner), and full media center (xvid videos, my music collection, picture screen saver with music in the background) in my living room.

My wife and I 'use' the 360 very rarely for games (and even less for live), but it gets significant daily usage as my living room entertainment center.

So it depends on what you want to use it for.

Serious question here....but what are we missing? I have a Gold membership but I fail to see anything about XBL that justifies the cost or the hype. Perhaps it's just my gaming habits or maybe there really is something I'm missing. I'm happy I have it but it doesn't seem like something I will miss when it is time to renew.

I'm not referring to just Gold, I'm referring to live period.

There is TONS of cool stuff on live that you don't have to have gold for.

Well I'll get silver for the updates and patches, but I'm not really interested in playing online is all.

There are a number of really really good games that I would put as recommended buys if you play online but lower down to 'just rent it' if you don't.

I think you should reserve your judgemet & rent some multiplayer games when you get the system. You get a month of 'Gold' live when you first setup your xbox360. Just a thought ;)

Why wouldnt you want to play online? just asking no flames or anything.
I personally brought the 360 just for live and multiplayer, those are my thoughts but I couldnt imagine having my xbox with no live.:whistle2:#

I think a lot of it depends on how you grew up with games. I played games with people, but I played many games solo as a child. I have many friends who almost exclusively played with friends. I think that can effect you. Some people love mulitplayer games, some people not as much. For those that do, you need a gold membership. For those that don't, you really don't.

Personally, I don't think you need an Gold (paying) membership to enjoy your console. That being said, I would think you would need the silver membership. That way, you can get demos, XBLA games (at least the free ones and some demos). Really, I love downloading the free stuff on the system. Now, maybe you can enjoy it without it, but I would think you would want that much at least.

(now in fairness, I have gold, and I love playing online with the system, so I may be biased).

I would answer an unequivocal YES OP!!!

The games for the 360 are some of the best I've ever played. While online play is fun, it can be extremely frustrating. Every single online game I've ever played on the 360 had a really great singleplayer game as well.

Live is such a great part of the 360 I think its one of the BIGGEST factors in the constant PS3 vs 360 arguments. That being said, if you don't plan on playing on-line at all, the silver still does a lot (allows you to buy downloadable content, can play free game demos, can download Xbox live arcade games. etc.)

I played a 4 player game of TMNT last night, it was pretty awesome

Just not interested. I'm anti-social. :p

I am also one of those people that prefer to play offline single player games than online multi. Although I do get three month subscription cards every now and then so I can play a few games online, but I'm usually on silver for the most part.
