read the title...

just got gunstar heroes on the VC and i must admit...its pretty damn fun. i never had a genesis as a kid and i hafta admit im enjoying some of the titles nintendo's releasing that i only could play at my neighbor's house when i was little.

anyways, is metal slug anything like it? if so, i think i might pony up the $40 for it for the wii.

They're somewhat similar. There's more shooting in Gunstar, but more platforming in Metal Slug. They're both pretty similar though.

To answer your question, yes.

Also check out Gunstar Super Heroes or Super Gunstar Heroes(can't remember which) for GBA. Great "sequal",and is in my top 5 best games for that system.

They're pretty similar. Metal Slug is superior IMO, plus it's cheaper per game than you paid for Gunstar Heroes (6 games for $40 = $6.67 each).

Metal Slug is much slower than Gunstar Heroes in terms of pace, but I'd have to say its an overall better game. Much more creative in the way of level design, enemies and weapons. Underappreciated franchise in my opinion.
How have you never played Metal Slug?
Pretty easily. I had never played it until I got my Neo Geo Pocket. It's a series that is relatively off the beaten path these days.

dont get metal slug on wii, I bought it, played it for 15 minutes, and decided it was rubbish. I love the series too, but yikes- stay clear from this one. Controls are fucking horrid and the they give you way too many credits (even on hard mode). They give you 20 credits to start out with. The music is off track, and in boss battles, the boss's weak points dont flash.

I think you're in the minority. They did a pretty good job porting them over to Wii.

I would bet you didn't try all the controller layouts. I have no problem with the Wiimote only scheme, and the GC pad works great too.

Why would having too many credits bother you? If you're a good player, you won't use them all anyway.

My music is just fine, and it's been said the weak points were taken out because Nintendo didn't want them to flash when hit. (Issues with their epilepsy policy.) I don't even see that as a big deal. The shots make a different sound when hitting a boss.

OP, if you love Gunstar, you will love Metal Slug. And all of the Metal Slugs are pretty good; there's really no bad ones in there.

Metal Slug & Contra > Gunstar Heroes.

BTW if you read my posts in the VC titles discussion, you'll know that I'm completely bias and hate Gunstar Heroes.

Metal Slug 4 fucking sucked.

But then again, it really wasn't made by SNK so that's ok.

Can you explain, Roufuss? I haven't actually played through 4 yet, so I am wondering what exactly makes it worse than the others. I think I've only played the first mission on 4 so far, and I'm pretty sure I really had fun with that mission. (It's the city level with a bunch of cars, yes?)

I'm surprised at all the comparisons being made here. Gunstar has a lot more variety in the way you move through the levels, such as the on-rails mine cart ride, the dice palace, and the spaceship battle in stage 5 or 6. Also, the speed at which the game can move is much faster than Metal Slug. They do have their similiarities, but I don't necessarily think that to love one is to love the other.

The level design gets much worse after that. Throughout the rest of the game you're fighting lots of enemies that aren't very fun (most of the game doesn't have much soldiers) and there are quite a few parts where your not on foot (jetpacks, motorcycles, etc..) and those aren't fun either. I didn't care for Metal Slug 5 much either, but it's better than 4. I haven't played 6 yet, I hope it's not as bad.

Just because we are saying the games are very similar doesn't mean we love both. I personally don't care for Gunstar Heroes much, but I love Metal Slug 1-3.
