Is now the time to get an Elite?

CAGiversary!
I plan on getting a 360 Elite for my Bday but I was told by some to wait and was advised to look this

Normally I wait 4 around a year or so 2 avoid any problems that occured near launch but it seems that they are not entirely fixed. I don't own a single next gen system (and after the release of all three, the 360 seems to be the best...ignoring the problems of course) and I can't wait to finally own 1 at last, but I don't want to be having any problems or get frustrated with it. I also noticed the article didn't specify which systems were having the problems (I'm hoping the Elites are problem-free...). So I'm just asking for other opinions if now's the time to get one. As I said i really want one, but don't want 2 deal with problems....but I also don't want to at last own the system when rumors of the next generation systems are already spreading. Thanks! :)

(I'm also wondering about the overheating and "red ring" problems)

I've spoken to a few 360 owners and have yet to hear of any problems regarding the Elite. Now, while that doesn't necessarily mean shit, with Moore's announcement regarding the extended warranty, and Microsoft's pledge to "take care" of their gamers, I'm getting an Elite this sunday when they get stocked at retailers.

If you can't wait for a price drop, make sure you buy it at Best Buy or Circuit City or some other place that has a price match guarantee.

Yeah, I'd buy a premium, not an Elite. I'd also wait for E3 to hit. Eho knows if MS will drop the price?

I blew the Manager's mind at my local Game Crazy--he told me he just bought one. I told him he should have waited until the price drop. He said--Wha....? Of course he got it from GameCrazy, so no price protection. You don't want to have any part of that kind of disappointment.

Unless you absolutely need the 1080p HDMI output and the bigger HDD (which can be bought seperately) I would just get a premium.

I'd wait and see for a price drop. If the PS3 is getting a drop, then we all know the XBOX 360 will be getting one right after too.

even with the warranty you are still going to have to send it away for repair that could take 2 weeks. Personally I would not buy one until the problem is gone.

Yeah i think I agree with you ^

I'm glad microsoft extended the warranty but from what I heard they still haven't fixed the problem. I've heard reports of 360s having to be returned to microsoft multiple times because and that Microsoft simply returns a refurbished Xbox 360 with the defects still. Just hoping someone could clarify this...

You know why you hear about so many peoples failing....because people that have their system working dont come on fourms and report it. My 360 has been working since OCt 2005(Manf)
Wait until E3 is over. Then buy an elite.
Any announcement made at E3 will be known by the end of the week. You could get an Elite tomorrow when stores nationwide stock them again (until sold out again)...just get it at a place that will refund you the difference of any price drop within 30 days (like Circuit City).

Yeah, but if you have any notion whatsoever that you might want the bigger HD, pay the extra $80 and get the Elite. I've already used 40GB of HD space on mine in 2 months. Sure, I could delete stuff and make room, but you know what, I don't have to - and that saves me time and energy ;).

You don't want to have to shell out $180 for a bigger HD then have to deal with your old one (which you might get a small amount back for if you sell it). The $80 saved me any thought of that hassle. Plus the black box is pretty slick. I'm not using the HDMI now, but I probably will soon. Then there's the chance (not guarantee) that it is slightly more reliable than the old model. It certainly can't be any worse. All in all, those factors made the choice seem obvious to me. Unless that $80 breaks the bank for you (in which case I'd question getting a 360 at all) then I say go for it. I've more than made up for it on the software side via deals posted on CAG.

As for price drops, well, sure you may want to wait that out. Personally I'm not looking for news of a 360 price drop - for my own selfish reasons (being that I just bought one at a place where I can't PM) I hope there isn't a drop until this Fall at the earliest . But in terms of the relative worth of the Elite vs Premium, no matter what the absolute costs of those are or will be, I say get the Elite.

But all of us without systems are hoping for a big price break and soon.

Io . . . weren't you big time anti-Microsoft? What led to your change of heart?

I need to decide between 360 and PS3 soon . . . I want to play GTA4 and Katamari . . . also Ratchet and Clank (which would point to PS3).

I agree, if you really want to get one in the next few days do this. It seems logical to think that there will be a price drop in the next week or so, so you can get your money back when, and if, the price drop hits.

Katamari is coming to the 360 and Wii as far as I know - not even sure it is coming to the PS3 this time around (but it probably will - it's just bigger news that the 360 and Wii are getting it). I'd like to play R&C too, but that makes the PS3 worth having for one game that I'm not willing to pay $60 for anyway, so I'd need to wait a year till that gets cheaper.

Eh - I think Microsoft is evil incarnate, but so is Sony ;).

Sony pissed me off with the non-support for 1080i sets at launch, then their trivialization of the issue when it finally came to light. I had one preordered at EB with the intent to keep it but that news led me to dump it quick on eBay (made a few $100, anyway). Basically that rendered the PS3 last-gen hardware for my setup. I hear they have fixed it for newer games, supposedly.

Once I was able to obtain some Live kits dirt cheap (Kmart and Target) and then built up a ton of Gamecrazy credit, the Elite came right in time. So I used my credit on that - so the actual cost of the system was less than half. (Plus GR had that big 50% off clearance and I snagged several 360 games using my credit there since my store was closing soon). I was actually considering getting a PS3 some time soon, and the $100 off helps, but then I realized there isn't a single game I'd play on it. The 360 has several games I can play right now (and either have already gotten or can get for less than $20). Hell, Viva Pinata alone was worth the purchase given how much time me and my kids have gotten out of it.

I *had* to get one or the other because I have a 4 year-old HDTV and had never done anything HD with it.

Hey, you're right . . . I thought for sure that Katamari was PS3 and 360 only . . .

I don't think Ratchet is worth getting the system for, but since I have neither . . .

My rule has been that there needs to be 3 games that I WANT to play in order to buy a new system. One thing in favor of getting a 360 now, is that there are cheap games that I'm interested in (Kameo for instance).

Well, yeah, that certainly made it easier. For the 360, I could get all of the following cheap: Viva Pinata, Lego Star Wars II (yes, we played it on the GC, but my son is playing the 360 version as I type), Kameo, Chromehounds, Enchanted Arms (of course, this is now cheap for PS3 also), Full Auto ($1.99 at Best Buy ;)), Arcade Unplugged, Gun, and a few others. Since then I've picked up TMNT, Lego Bionicles, and Virtua Tennis 3 for less than $20. I also want to play Oblivion big-time though it isn't cheap enough yet (and note that it is unplayable for me on the PS3 due to the upscaling problem). I'm also waiting on cheaper prices for games like Lost Planet.

The PS3 games (Enchanted Arms being the exception) won't drop for a bit longer, and none of them, to me, are must play titles yet.
