Is Oblivion unstable, or is it my 360?

CAGiversary!
I've barely started playing Oblivion (GOTY edition, patched)-just right outside the prison, and my 360 has locked hard...is that the game or my 360?

While I'm at it-what do those "wells" do? I found one right outside the prison, and when I pressed "A" it said I had drawn it's power or something like that, but didn't explain what that meant-there's just some random icon in the upper right that doesn't seem to match any of may ability icons.

I stopped playing the game because it froze so many times.

Me too... I quit very early because it froze almost every time I tried to save which really pissed me off.

I had a couple issues with the original version on my 360 but after it got patched a couple times, I no longer had any problems.

Now I'm on the PS3 GOTY version and it seems fine.

The's game glitchy. It might be your 360 or your game.

The wells gives you a bonus to specified attributes. You're gonna have to memorize the icons if you want to know what each means, but you can go into the inventory and goto the status page to find out what's ailing or boosting your character.

I never got far enough to find out the quests for it since the game completely destroyed my 360.

I've got about 17 hours on my gameclock and it has frozen up once (GotY ed, 360.). Burnout Revenge just froze up too so it's not just the game.
Try clearing the cache, that is supposed to help some oblivion problems.
oblivion is the best game on the 360
What the hell does that have to do with the OP having problems with Oblivion?

OP, I've never had any issues with Oblivion personally. I'm about 7 hours in.

Oblivion can be a bit fussy, but I never had serious problems with it. A few lockups... some slowdown now and then... but given how fussy 360s can be, it could be the system or it could be the game.

The Ayleid Wells are ruins left behind by the generic precursor species, in this case they are called Ayleids. Anyway, drawing power from them can be done I think as often as you like with just some cooldown period, but I think the only power you draw is like... Fortify Magicka... which just increases your maximum magicka if memory serves.

Really, REALLY dumb way to check spell effects on this game, though. Pull up the inventory/journal menus and tab over to the leftmost pane, with your stats etc. Then tab into the rightmost subpane of that and it should list currently active spell effects.

Well, either there or in the rightmost subpane of the magic pane.

Could be either the system or game. I logged over 100 hours and my 360 choked once or twice. It later displayed the Rings, but not during Oblivion.

Some games I can play HOURS straight with no problems, some tend to lockup quite often.

Lockup games - Oblivion, The Darkness (The Darkness locks up within an hour first time its ran, if I turn the systme on/off I can play it hours without another until I shut it down for a while again.) Perfect Dark Zero (That game just hates me, tends to crash in 10-20 minutes, but then again I managed to beat each level that quick thanks to that "encouragement") and sometimes Gears of War.

Everything else I've played (See- Gamertag Warked on xbox.com) has been fine and lockup free.

I've put 40+ hours into that game, and it didn't freeze even once. What edition do you have? Hopefully it's not a problem with the new Shivering Isles GotY Edition, because I'm hoping to buy that soon.

Try clearing the cache on your hard drive.

The only two 360 games that have frozen on me are Halo 3 and Gears of War.

Thanks for the responses guys! So far I've just had that one lock up (knock on wood).

The game is crazy ambitious, although I'm not actually sure how much I'll end up liking it, as I'm bored by the (to me) generic fantasy dungeons I keep going through...but geez, the scope of this game just makes everything else look sad.

If you do keep on playing, this site is packed with info on the game.

I've got the GOTY edition of Oblivion as well, and I've had it freeze a few times. Luckily, the autosave saves often, so I didn't have any problems with restarting. Plus I got off my horse once and fell through the ground. Wish I could duplicate that. :)

Word of advice. Go to towns and find some sidequests. I find them to be way more fun than dungeon crawling just for the hell of it.

I have the non GOTY addition, and it froze a few times, but never enough to make me think there was a serious problem. Then again, I might be a bit more forgiving of it, after suffering through Morrowind (and loving it), which would freeze all the time.

It's possible to climb out of Anvil without going through the gates. That leads to some odd, partially-visible things.
