The 360 is heavy on the shooters. Thus far, the only retail game that I've gotten that I'm for sure keeping in my collection is Guitar Hero II (Crackdown might join it). However, some of the unique XBLA content almost makes the system worth it on their own (Geometry Wars & Pac-Man C.E., my two favorite games on the system, will be right up your alley and only cost you $15 for both!). There are a lot of good buy-them-play-them-sell-them games out like Tomb Raider: Legend, Burnout Revenge, & Need for Speed: Most Wanted.
If you can get one for under retail, I'd say go for it. I wouldn't spend a full $400, but I'm glad I got one for the steal-of-a-deal that I did. It's a solid machine with a lot of potential, and a nice compliment to the Wii.
I just want to second what Daroga wrote. Him, you (PleasantOne) and me have similar tastes I think (in particular wrt to sports games and FPS's). I got a 360 because it is showing promise for some RPG's. I don't ever expect it to become like the PS2 (hopefully the Wii will take over in that respect, especially with how well it is selling in Japan). But if there are a few big RPG titles for the 360 I'll be happy. I'm probably getting Blue Dragon upon release, and maybe Eternal Sonata and Two Worlds. I haven't picked up Oblivion yet because I'm waiting for some sort of Game of the Year edition and I have plenty to play in the mean time (I've gotten into Chromehounds quite a bit recently and that is my one big online game). I've got plenty of others cheap via CAG like TR:Legend, Burnout Revenge, BfME II, etc... I put a lot of time into Viva Pinata too - that is a MUST BUY as far as I'm concerned. It is BY FAR my choice for best 360 game, though I could see how it wouldn't be for everyone (though I'm guessing you may like it).
I enjoy XBLA to an extent, but I don't think it is as hot as everyone else does. I've only bought one game (besides those on the Arcade Unplugged disc): Worms. But if you like Puzzle games I think Hexic (which came with the system) is fantastic.
One thing you have to get used to is the amazing amount of noise the system makes, though - in particular the disc drive when playing 360 games. I enjoy XBLA for one reason for sure - the machine is quiet when playing those

. I mean, I heard all the complaints from people but I never really understood what they meant until I got mine home - and mine is an Elite. I've sort of learned to tune it out now, but it is always there as a nagging reminder. Obviously the number one thing MS needs to deal with is the high failure rate. But after that they need to get this thing to be quieter (and note that new chips won't help with that as it is the disc drive and not the cooling fans making most of the noise).
I'm splitting my time between the 360, Wii, PS2, and Gamecube. My DS is the one left out right now and my PSP gets it's usual power-up once every 3 months or so . For sure I've spent more time on the 360 than the other systems though - but that's because I just got it beginning of May and I had the entire library of games to start going through. I don't imagine if I'd had one for a year I'd be playing it nearly as much.
Anyways, I would say go for it, but look for some sort of deal to be sure. This is CAG after all

. My "deal" was using trade-in credit at Gamecrazy (and this was *before* the amazing trade-in promo they have going on now - if this was in effect when I was building up for my 360, I probably could have gotten 4 full-priced new games along with it)
