Is there any way to go about installing the new quicktime without having to install..

CAGiversary!
...itunes as well?

Anyway this is in continuation with all of my computer questions of late. Anyway, I've finally decided to upgrade from quicktime 6 (I believe) and is there any difference in the new quicktime at all?. I want the quicktime, but I simply don't want Itunes or to clutter up/pollute my computer with it.

Has anybody worked with quicktime alternative? Is it anygood or should I just stick to the quicktime I have now?

Finally, for my last question, is there any codecs that might work or be worth it instead.

P.S. Nevermind about that last question, this is the true last question;) Anyone know where to get the Grey Video by any chance?

I have an installer that installs QT w/o itunes but you're really better off with QT alternative. Same goes for Real Alt.
Did you try downloading it from mirror sites like cnet?
Actually yes, but they just linked me to Apple.

What's the difference with QT Alternative compared to regular QT? Why is it so great?

Could anybody recommend also some sites to where to get these programs or is free-codecs.com the best, etc.?

Also, since this is a bump, I'll just ask it again, where can one get the Grey Video?

Try here for the stand-alone installer:

Which QT and Real Alts are you talking about?

These are simply alternative players that play .mov and .rm files respectively. They're usually not as bloated as the official players and don't come with advertising BS. I tend to get these 3rd party players than the official stuff. Even my WMP doesn't see much usage as I use media player classic. MPC is based off the old windows media player and also isn't as bloated as the lastest WMP. I like it overall. As a graphical user interface over MPC, I use Sasami2k. It's a bit old but it got a great menu set up and preferable to WMP.

That's funny, I have the opposite problem, I hate Quicktime (especially because I can not figure out how to turn off the Windows autoload). I wish there was a stand alone Itunes file.

Yaeh, I actually hate that part of Quicktime as well. I hate that it autoloads and just saps my memory at the beginning when I don't need it. Wish I could turn that off in settings or something, but the only way I have figured out to do so is through a command promt and msconfig. Anybody know of a simpler way to do so?

If you are running XP, you can go to Start->Run and type in msconfig. Then go to the startup tab and uncheck qttask. It is that simple.

P.S. -- This might also work for other versions of Windows. I don't remember when the msconfig command came into being.

Y'know, OP, you can simply uninstall iTunes after installing QuickTime w/ iTunes. I ran into the same problem you did, but installed it anyway just to see what was up. To my surprise, I could simply delete iTunes and keep QuickTime. Of course, this is all irrelevant now since Shrike found the stand-alone.

I had a feeling this topic existed, so I didn't make a new one! I installed the Quicktime Alternative, but I uninstalled Quicktime in the process (it recommends doing so upon installation). But now when there is a Quicktime movie embedded in a website (like on gametrailers.com), Firefox says I need to d/l a plug-in to view the movie, then says it can't find it, so I select "manually install", and I'm sent to Apple's site...

So am I correct in assuming QT Alternative won't allow me to watch .mov movies in the Firefox browser? Any info would be appreciated, thanks!

It should allow you but you need to do a clean install. Remove QT first then install QTAlternative.

Well upon installing QT Alternative, it automatically prompted me to remove QT first, which I did. So I figure I should uninstall QT Alt., d/l and install a barebones QT (without iTunes), and either leave it at that, or then remove it before installing QT Alt.? Hahaha I think I'm repeating a few steps...

What's funny is QT still starts up everytime I turn on my computer (the icon is always there in my task bar on the bottom right). Only, "Open QT" is greyed, so all I can do is change settings. But still, I guess that things harder to get rid of than I thought...

Thanks for your help!

Yeah, I think you keep reinstalling parts which mess up the clean install. Wipe out QT completely and install QTAlt by itself. Any *.mov files should be able to be played with the installed Media Player Classic.

Damn, been a while since I saw this thread. Didn't think it would ever rise from it's grave again. Glad I could be of service with one of my threads at least.
