Is there really a shortage of Nintendo DS??

dwsscs

CAGiversary!
I saw plenty of them today! BB had about 30 on display, and the guy said there were tons more in the back. TRU had about 10 in the glass case also, and I hear that people are selling these on ebay with a mark up. Maybe I want in on the ebay action! Though I would rather see a gamer pick them up.

Stores around me, in Denver, Co, seem to have plently of stock. I checked ebay and most of the DS being sold seem to be going for around $160-$170.....around a 10% mark-up. Hardly seems worth it to me.

Its in the subject line, my bad. They are kind of the same in my book. I never liked the Game Boy, or DS screen comparing them to the brightness and clarity of the Sega handhelds. Which I just want to plug , that I happen to have a nice Sega Nomad on ebay. I bought it new and took really good care of it. All proceeds from the auction will go to purchase a PS2 hard drive for my Socom 2 addiction:

Thanks that was what I was thinking, but someone had one here offering CAG a discount off the BIN price. He still wanted over $200. If there is a shortage I wanted to help CAG out by letting them know there isn't a shortage here yet!

Bestbuy in my area only had 3 left on Sunday evening. GameStop, EB, Circuit City and all 3 Walmarts in my area were sold out.

oh and I'm in Portsmouth NH

Have you gotten a free ipod with that banner yet? Sorry to be off topic?

Except the SP's brightness is much more vivid and brighter than the nomad, and the screen doesnt all go to hell with fast paced games like Sonic....sega's mascot. Hey the Nomad is great....you'll sell it just fine...I've had three I love them so much. But the Gameboy Advance SP model display is light years above the Nomad. PLaying super Street fighter or Sonic on this thing was a nightmare. No reason to lie. Lets be real here.

Rather than make a new thread, I hear that the DS plays some multiplayer games off of one cartridge? True or Not?
How about compatiblity? I know it plays GBA games, but since the Advance plays all old Game boy games, what does this play? Thanks in advance, and if there is already a thread, well I didnt search but I also didnt make a new thread.

I've had 15 people sign up, but no one finished. =/

True it does play some multiplayer games off of one cartridge
It only plays DS and GBA games No GB or GB Color games

Yeah, they did that so that GBA SP sales wouldn't suffer too much, and also to reinforce that the DS is not the continuation of the GB line.

I guess I was misunderstood! By brightness and clarity - I mean there is a constant with the screen in different situations. I have a Game Boy SP and hate the fact its harder to play in daylight (even with the backlight on) compared to the Sega Products. Plus the colors seem washed out with the back light on, and hard to see with it off. But the Game Boy SP screen does seem to have a better refresh rate the problem is seeing it in daylight. I did not have any of the problems with Street Fighter 2 championship edition or the Sonic games like you did. Let it be noted I never owned a Game Gear so I have little experience with it. I am not trying to be dishonest at all.

They still seem to be going OVER-priced on EBAY. I was thinking of picking up one to make a few dollars, but not sure if it's REALLY worth it. I may even just break even after PayPal/Ebay fees

It's tough to say. Right now everybody that had the idea to resell is selling them on Ebay so there's too much competition for it to really have a high price. Wait a couple weeks then see. If it doesn't go up you can always just return it to the store.

My CC has sold a whole three units so far. Maybe people are waiting to see if any better deals are going to come around during the holiday season.

Me.. I'm waiting six months before buying one at least as I do with all game systems. By then Nintendo should have any bugs worked out on the newer units... plus I just blew $86 dollars on buying a used Pioneer CLD-D702 Laserdisc player on eBay today. =P~

well, i had pre order two for my son & me. & got the e-mail yesterday, letting me know they got shipped, but this afternoon my friend tryed ordering one & all he got was everybody telling him they were sold out.

p.s. the DS's won't play older games????

if that's the case, i need to order a new game or 2.

[quote name='fullhavok']p.s. the DS's won't play older games????

It won't play GameBoy or GameBoy Color games. It will play GBA games just fine though.

Walmart was out for me, but I was also there last night at like 11 and they only had about 3 which one of those my friend bought. (BTW metroid multiplayer is AWESOME) I saw about 15 in EB games today, they had one of their little cube areas behind the counter filled with DSes.

I've been to half a dozen stores during the BF sales... hardly anyone had a DS in their cart to be bought. I think most parents don't know of it, or they are going for the cost affordable GBA SP. When an SP is only 79 and the othe 70 could be put towards games, while just a DS alone is 150, you'll understand why it's still around. But I'm SURE that will change as we get closer to Christmas Eve.

Good point but I wonder since its marketed more to adults. That maybe there won't be a run on these this Xmas.

My mind is still fresh from the NES days of Nintendo "shortages". I remember Super Mario Bros 2 being sold out everywhere when it was released. I called Toys R Us and was told that they had received 2(!) copies and sold within minutes.

If you think the DS madness on Ebay is bad, just wait until the Japan release of the PSP.

Gimme a break.. Nintendo wouldn't short distribution on this system. The industry won't allow another PS2 debacle with as much of a market as there is to purchase one before Xmas.

No shortage at all in our area. Sears is overstocked as is Walmart, BB and TRU has em in stock too. The only places that say they are out down here are EB and Gamestop (they are pushing bundles instead and advise they wont be available for a few weeks).

We have a very low supply here. TRU and BB are the only stores near me that have it. Target, WalMart, EB, and Game Stop are out. But I kind of live in a area where the parents usually are well employed and can spoil there kids.

Note: I haven't traveled outside my immediate area and check anything.

All my local stores seem to have a TON of DS's left, except gamestop and eb. BB and CC had probably 40 units on hand each. I think the reason they aren't selling well is due to advertising. Looking at the holiday ads for the past few weeks, I have noticed little in the way of advertisement for the Nintendo DS...You would figure it would be on the front page of a BB ad or something, but so is not the case. I still find it amazing that EB online is taking orders for Feb. 05.

Everyone EXCEPT EB seems to have had them last Friday... so, talk to EB and they will tell you 'YOU SHOULD HAVE PREORDERED - NONE LEFT - ALL GONE' or just walk across the street and get one anywhere else.

:)

The DS's screen blows the GBA SP out of the water. It's easily the best portable game screen I've used, and I think I've used them all (including NOMAD, TurboExpress, etc). I haven't tried it outside yet, though.

Duh! Of course it blows all those other systems away. But what it must do is stand up against its main competition: the PSP. If you look at the Ridge Racer comparison in the latest EGM, you'll see that the DS has plenty to worry about! Of course, a system is only as good as its games (otherwise, XBox would be #1), and if you combine the limited must haves for the PSP (Ridge looks good, as does Metal Gear, but are there any other must-haves for the PSP? So far - no), with the bonehead decisions of the PSP (Metal Gear as a card game? WTF?), then the DS has a chance.

About one week since I previously posted... and my CC still has a flood of DS units.

Giving credit where it is due, CC did have the DS on the front page the week it came out. I just don't think the public interest is quite there for the DS as of yet - the GBA SP is still selling like hotcakes, and honestly most consumers probably don't give a rip about a dual screen portable system.

Just my guess on this, that's all.

Friday I went to BB to buy DS accessories and I noticed that they were selling SP bundles w/ 2 games. I wld imagine that when a parent sees both systems right next to each other they will go for the SP. A system and 2 games at half the price is a no brainer for the parent of 2 or 3 kids.

Hey - I live in Atlanta. If you want a DS, there are a zillion of them to be found up here. On the east side for example, there is a BB, a TRU, and a Target in the Northlake mall area that all have multiple DS's on hand.

just in case you were wanting one....

These are very easy to find. Just go to unconventional video game stores, like Sears and other department stores. Stacks and stacks of them.

Dude this post about the nomad was older and another topic! But I was comparing it to the Game Boy Advance SP! I hadn't even seen a DS yet. I hope the screen is better than the nomad, since its like 8 years (or so newer). The Game Boy SP is more than 5 years newer than the Nomad , but the colors still looked washed out. Its funny how good the color is in the TV commercials , just misleading. The only way to get game boy games that clear is on a Game Boy adapter for the Game Cube.

I picked up one, just wondering if its going to be another PS2 shortage type of thing. I actually go to your neck of the woods every Tuesday. My daughter takes gymnastics at Atlanta school of Gymnastics about a mile from the store area you are talking about.
