Is this burner a good deal?

Nope. If it doesn't mention the brand in the description, it is made by some generic/low quality company. I would search for a more reputable brand so it doesn't die on you in a few weeks.

I think it is a good deal! Samsung is not tbe best brand out there but for $40 you can't go wrong. I bought a no-name brand (it had a name but not a known name per se) for $53 (dual layer) over a year ago and it works perfectly. If you take good care of it you should be fine, plus if they offer a Extended Service Agreement/Warranty for $10 or so you may as well do it. That's my opinion. If you are cheap...as we all are...then it is a deal.

I said it's a Samsung. And it says that in the ad.

Samsung has changed alot from the past and is on the rise. On a budget however, I have always been a NEC man. Check newegg.com for a NEC 3540... They are a very reputable company.

It does say the brand, just look more closely, it's a Samsung. Since it doesn't say which model number it is, I would go to the Samsung website, try and find the model number, by matching the description and the picture in the flyer, then type in the samsung and the model number and the word review in your favorite search engine and see what you find. I myself just bought a benQ from tiger direct, they usually have good stuff at affordable prices, but that's just me. Hope this helps.....

Sometimes your better off buying from a company that might not be well known, for the simple fact that some companies seem like they don't care about the quality of there products and try to sell by reputation of company name alone....

In case your interested here's a link to the burner I purchased, except mine came with software. I'm very happy with this burner, it can touch scratched DVD's which most DVD players can't even handle, because the laser can read from different angles. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1112576&Tab=11&NoMapp=0
