Is this considered weird?

Paco

CAGiversary!
I went to get a haircut the other day, I was in a hurry since my gamecrazy got King of Fighters XII in early "four days early" And I forgot to tip the lady. I walked out and got the game and then on the way home I remembered that I didn't tip her. I went back to the place and tipped her 33% and apologized for the messup.

Is this considered weird? Would I have been better off not going back and tipping her? And would this make me be seen as the weirdo that came back to tip someone?

This is the reason I started cutting my own hair. Tipping someone to cut your hair? What the eff? It's ridiculous. Plus, honestly I do a better job of cutting my hair than they ever did.

So, weird to me, but probably not weird to most people.

It isn't weird to tip somebody cutting your hair.

However, I bought my own sets of clippers and guards. I couldn't see paying somebody over $15 for running a pair of clippers with a one inch guard over my head for ten minutes.

With that avatar, it's hard to tell if you're staying in character or unintentionally mocking yourself.

Not weird at all. It was a very nice thing to do and you probably made her day by going back and tipping as she probably has lots of people who don't tip.

It's not a "mandatory" thing to do like tipping waiters, but I always tip 15-20% for mine as long as I get a good haircut as I know the stylists in the chain salons I go to don't make that much an hour and I do well enough for myself that throwing them $2-3 bucks isn't anything to worry about.

Why do people think it's weird to tip. It's a service. It's not required...but if someone does a good job, why not reward them over the people who suck at it.

So, I am unsure of when you are supposed to tip and when you aren't. It seems like it might depend on the region. I always tip, and since the haircuts at my barber are pretty cheap (about $8), I usually tip a decent amount, because I appreciate that their prices are lower than chain haircutters. But I think I get a weird look from them every time I do, like they are not sure I know that I am paying more than the price of the haircut. Makes me feel kind of awkward. They're pretty weird guys, though, so it could just be that.

With haircuts, it's really just up to you. There's not time you absolutely must tip--it's just a nice gesture if you get a good hair cut.

But it's not like waiters who are paid lower than minimum wage where a tip is more mandatory as long as the service was good.

In short, I kind of frown at people who don't tip for a good haircut, but get super pissed at people who don't tip for a good service in a restaurant.

I think with retail chains that cut hair don't get that much for pay. Cost Cutters is one, and that's why each cut is now up to like $15.

I'd tip for good cuts, but I don't tip for bad, and sometimes I just don't tip if it's just buzzed cut.

It's not like waiters who are making like 1/10 of my salary in just base pay and are expected to get tips to fill in the rest.

Yeah, I noted that in my first post. I usually go to chain places (Hair Cuttery, Great Clips etc., whatevers closest to where I live) as I seem to get a good haircut every time with any employee.

So I always tip $2-4 on the $13-16 haircut/shampoo since they're only getting a small portion of that. Though I probably would tip the same at a local place as well, as I'm just generally pretty generous about tipping for service be it haircuts, cab ride, valet parking, bellboys etc. I won't tip for a bad hair cut of course, and I never get a buzz cut (number 2 on the sides/back scissor cut on top) so my haircuts with shampooing etc. tend to be 20 minutes or so.

I don't tip for haircuts. My place charges $16 for a haircut. Used to be $14 until they bought a big screen TV. I go there because its convenient and they do a good job.
When the hell did you have to start tipping for a hair cut?
Are you serious?

You should just tip whatever you feel their service was worth. I used to worry about how much, but then I realized that there wasn't a set amount like with waiting tables.

I wish there was a barber around here. There is nothing like a cut from a good, talented barber. My school had a barber shop in the basement floor of the student center that I loved going to. But slowly the talented old men left and now it is over-run by a bunch of know nothing bimbos. After a couple of tries, I decided they were as worthless as the talentless hacks at the chain stores.

Now I just go to this pretty high class beauty school for my cuts. I have never had a bad experience there and they are very good priced. It's $8.95 for a cut. They usually do such a superb job that I give them at least a fin on top of that. Sometimes I'll have a coupon so I'll just add the coupon value to the tip. It's worth it to me to pay extra to someone who can give me a good cut because at your typical chain store I am always very dissatisfied with their "work" (it's like they're all blind or something). And I have gone back once or twice in my day when I have forgotten to tip, so no I don't think it is at all weird. I think they appreciate it and that it is flattering.

... Unless you are the weird, creepy stalker looking type.
I'll be honest here... If the girl who cuts my hair is hot and flirty, I usually tip.
I'll admit, this often works on me too. Only if I get a good cut in the process though. But then I'll usually give a better tip. That reminds me... the last haircut I got the girl was super cute and way flirty. I just thought it was the typical thing, but that she was more friendly than most. But then I was talking to my sister about it later and she said it sounded like the girl liked me. Unfortunately she said she was graduating the next week...

I've thought about going back in and asking them if there is someone who can get my contact info to her because I wanted to be one of her clients. But I don't know if that would make me the weird, stalker type.

I saw your avatar and I instantly thought of this.

"Why tip someone for a job I'm capable of doing myself? I can deliver food. I can drive a taxi. I can, and do, cut my own hair. I did however, tip my urologist, because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones." - Dwight K. Schrute

On topic though, I'd have done the same thing. :)

Yes, it's weird.

However, it's a GOOd weird- you will now be remembered as the ultra-cool customer who went out of your way to make sure she got a good tip, and your future service will be better for it.

So don't feel 'off' about it.

The OP did the right thing.

Im actually surprised that there are people here who don't tip their hair stylist. I always tip unless they fuck up my hair really bad.

It depends on the type of cut Im getting, and if it was good. I remember last time I went to place my friend recomended, opened an extra half hour because I was stuck in traffic, and then took a half hour to get my cut. I have been to places where you're half way through your cut, another customer walks in and they quickly finish up to get to the next person. Thats the type of cut I dont tip for.

Place I go includes a shampoo, 2 cycles, and a shoulder massage with one of those electric massagers for $15. I usually tip $3.
I should put a tip jar on my desk at work
That would be awesome. Then you could casually motion toward it every time you answer a question.

I'm really surprised by how many people here don't tip for haircuts.

I'll tip for basically anything with one exception: When I'm driving through New Jersey, where it's a state law or whatever that you have to have an attendant pump your gas. I'm not tipping him, I'm perfectly willing to pump my own if you let me.

As for haircuts - yes, you should tip, even if just a couple bucks.

God, you guys are che... oh, right..
