October 14, 2008 - According to a Tokyo Game Show report from Japanese investment research firm Morningstar, Metal Gear Solid 4 may find its way to the Xbox 360 after all. Morningstar published a general article covering multiplatform trends that features a quote from a Konami public relations representative that should fuel rumors for months to come. The rep is quoted as saying, regarding MGS4, "We're actively looking into a release for the Xbox 360." While this isn't a confirmation of it coming, it does lend hope to those Xbox 360 owners who haven't plunked down money on a PS3.

However, this little quote doesn't clear the major hurdle Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima has listed for the title coming to Xbox 360. He has been quoted in several interviews saying a port was likely impossible due to the game being optimized for the PS3 hardware, specifically Blu-ray discs.

IGN has contacted Konami's US representatives for a comment and is awaiting a response. The original Morningstar report can be found here.

Far from substantiated, but that's a pretty straightforward quote.

But for hilarity and headaches, translate the original source from Japanese using Babelfish. Ow.

In the meantime, I'll keep dreaming about this being real. Hey, we're getting FFXIII so that's enough for me to hold the ever so slightest of hope.

Really the only folks who haven't played MGS4 yet are the antisocial and xbots. Because even poor people have friends with PS3s.

luls @ PS3 fanboy.
But they'll have to put it on like 298572 discs, mirite?
Geez dude, your way off.

They won't sell MGS on disks, they will create an entire 80 GB hardrive with all of the info on it so you just attach it to the 360 to play.

GREAT NEWS, now that will eliminate the 4 minute install time between each chapter that plagued the PS3 version......:applause:

I will probably buy this if and when it shows up on the 360, although I would suspect that it would be late 2009 at the earliest, based on the contract Konami has with Sony.

If they never port it, so be it, too many other good games are coming out to worry about just this one. Maybe if they make the PS 4 backwards compatible (unlike the current ps3 models), I will play it on that, like I played Halo & Halo 2 on the 360.

I never owned an original xbox, just a ps2, so the (50%?) backwards compatibility of the 360 has been a good feature that sony should try and put back in for their next ps3 upgrade.

What a putz. Not everyone is a junior high student with nothing better to do than sit at a friends house and play THEIR system and game.

Now go back to your fanboy forum before I bitchslap someone.

What are you talking about? It'll easily fit on a Blu-Ray disc since Microsoft's Blu-Ray drive will be released in, like, 20 minutes.

Well, here is a story from Kotaku (who credited Yahoo Japan). I would link the original story, (we know how good kotaku's fact checking was with Xbox Pure) but I can't read the japanese........

Konami Officially Comments On Xbox 360 Metal Gear Solid 4

Yes, this again. All throughout Metal Gear Solid 4's development, rumors swirled that the PS3 exclusive would go multi-platform. Even after Konami announced that the game would feature an in-game PS3 controller, the rumors persisted. And now thanks to Japanese stock investor bulletin Morningstar, those rumors continue. The site points out that the number of cross platform titles has increased in an effort to appeal to a more international market. While at TGS, Konami pr mouthpiece Yoshitaka Arai told Morningstar:

The worldwide demand for an Xbox 360 version (of MGS4) is quite high, and it is something we are currently looking in to.

Does this really surprise anyone? The thing that is surprising is that Konami, a third party developer, poured so much money into an exclusive title in an age where multi-plat development is quickly becoming de rigueur.

東京ゲームショウの見方=ブランド重視とマルチプラットフォーム化が加速 [Yahoo! Japan]

My thoughts:
The rumors before release was that it was a timed exclusive of a year, so I doubt we will hear nothing confirming a possible port, such as screenshots or PR statement, until a year after the ps 3 release. (Released 6/12/08, so nothing until 6/09 I would imagine.)

Dude this isn't Gamefaqs gtfo.

Looks like it is. This guy hasn't posted outside of the PS3 forum, outside of this one post.

Oh Shi--- It made IGN. Wait, what? Come one, cockcheese this is video games not real news. It doesn't work that way. Ololol.

Konami, all I want is MG:O. Port that so I can play it on LIVE forever and ever and I will be happy as a dog with two dicks.

I wonder if the Fall Update's ability to install game content onto the hard drive has played into Konami's decision to make this happen. It could eliminate (or significantly reduce) the multi-disc issue presented by MGS4's size.

Well, Lost Odyssey is four discs, so I don't see why multiple discs would be a problem, especially with the ability to transfer games to your HDD, with NXE.

I assume that it would be atleast 6 or so discs, for them to port this, since MGS4 pretty much takes up an entire Blu-Ray, right? Konami will have to use 9GB CD-DVD's for the games though, using the standard 4 won't cut it.

I really hope it does though, this is still the main reason I want a PS3, and if I can put my money towards other things, then that would be great. Because otherwise, I'm buying a PS3 solely for MGS4 (when I do have the spare money to).

The 360 "standard" are dual-layer DVD discs that hold ~9 GB.

Which couldn't they technically be upped to 18 if they don't have to put artwork on the top of the disc and make it double-sided dual-layer DVDs?

Dear Konami:

Please bring MGS4 to the Xbox 360, in order to deal a great, swift, painful kick in the nuts to tools like these (Jesus_S_Preston).

Wrong. It's 8.4 gb standard. And Carmack said after copy protection it's more like 6 gb of space. Didn't he try to jilt Microsoft into letting them have a third disc for pesos and Microsoft said "NO WILL"

I believe that was the case, yes. If MGS4 came out on 360 they'd have to butcher the audio, and that's really a major draw of the game since it's uncompressed. And audio on the 360 is not as good as PS3 audio as it is.

Then there's the marketing stuff. They'd have to take out the PS3, the PSP, they'd have to renegotiate the marketing contracts for the game, as well as a number of other things. Not to mention take out a few jokes here and there, or insert new ones about disc swapping.

No one would give a damn about the audio if it was ported. Well, other than angry PS3 owners, who would enjoy making a big deal out of it.

It would hardly be "butchered" anyway. Your average nobody can't tell the difference between a 192kbps MP3 and a CD, so it's not like people would refuse to buy it because the audio was compressed a little.

Serious question. How much space does MGS4 use on disc, and why does it use that much? All the cutscenes use the game engine, right? Are there multiple language tracks? Someone mentioned uncompressed audio...

The MGS games have typically been on the short side, so I don't see why so much space is needed.

Not that it really matters to me. I'll probably get a PS3 eventually.
Wrong. It's 8.4 gb standard.
~ = "around" or "roughly"

I would say 8.4 gb was "roughly" or "around" 9 gb, and therefore hardly "wrong."

I played through the PS3 game (even have a copy signed by Kojima himself) and I gotta say, the entire game content itself could probably fit on one 360 disc since it's like 5 hours of gameplay. The other 40 or so gigs is just freaking uncompressed cutscenes. I wouldn't mind sacrificing the quality of those ridiculous cutscenes to get it on the 360.

So the only extra space they really take up is for scripting and audio (assuming all of the textures used in cutscenes are used in gameplay also)?

I would say that Halo 3's video-sharing capabilities (which are not video at all, just game-data packets) prove that in-game video can be done without enormous file sizes.

Well 5 hours is a bit of an exxaggeration i would think. There are a ton of extra or alternate methods of acheivment in the game. I am on the last chapter and will be finishing it up tonight.

It has a ton of audio and video though so I am not sure how many disks it would take on the 360..

I cant imagine this will happen in the end though.

I definitely feel like an outsider. I wanted to get on the MGS love...but I just couldn't. I never played the first one, just the Metal Gear on the NES and then the sequel...which isn't really the sequel or something like that.

I started with MGS2 and for some reason I just wanted to get all the dog tags from the start. I would move on and see I missed some...I deleted my file. Then I tried again...but just stopped. Never played 3...and 4 as pretty as it looks...I dunno it just doesn't do much for me.

It's backwards say with RE. I didn't care much for the original 1-3 ones, but 4 really made it fun for me...and I'm actually looking for 5.

What really is it about Metal Gear Solid that is such a big deal. Like someone said before, I figured the fanbase is a specific one who probably already went and got a PS3 for this game. I just want to know what is it really...the story? Isn't that supposed to have so many crazy ideals?

Maybe I should give 2 a chance again and find the remake for the Gamecube one.

Get the remake first and dont do all the dogtags.. Just play the game for funs sake.

I was hooked way back on the NES, but that was just a dumbed down version of the MSX game. The second one never even made it to the NES.

The game has always been interesting to me, but I am no nut (even though my sig and name may lead people to believe that). I got MGS4 on release and just started actually playing it this past weekend. Its very good, and I am loivng it. I did not however get to play MGS3 and will eventually go back and get that.

I say start with the remake, and then grab 2 and play it.

I will say though its like a damn soap opera as the twists just keep on coming, to the point where it doesnt even surprise you anymore. MGS 4 seems to be wrapping it all up for the most part.. I just know they are introducing more characters and that we will eventually find out someone else was really pulling the strings in a later installment.
Really the only folks who haven't played MGS4 yet are the antisocial and xbots. Because even poor people have friends with PS3s.
So I must be an antisocial xbot. I know people with a ps3 and MGS4 hell I have a PS3 and am chances are one of the few people that could never get into the MGS games. I don't intend to play this game unless I can get it for around 20 bucks and chances are still wont get it.

I also have said since e3 that this has a high chance of coming to the 360. The way the guy that made the game acted when they translated him saying PS3 exclusive and then he said for now. It would be a bad idea for them not to put this on the 360.

Just a thought, but I never saw what the big deal was on disc swapping. Say it did take 9 discs. Overall, discs are relatively light and cheap, so incremental costs aren't that much (and I'm sure their is an engineer out there that could think of a crafty box design to hold it cheap). As far as switching discs, switching discs once an hour really wouldn't be a killer for most gamers.

I also love how this rumor won't die. But, in reality, it really shouldn't. MGS4 cost a lot of money to make, and ti could make some of that back being on the 360. I think the thing is that they either have to hurry it out, or add some content to it. If they don't, it's going to just be seen as an old game by the time it's released.

You also didn't put down the fact that Carmack said that a good chunk of space goes to Microsoft's copy schemes. That and a third disc would be incredibly expensive since Microsoft has that royalty scheme to keep people from going over two discs "mostly kept at one disc".

The point is that the user said the standard storage capacity for 360 discs were 4.7 GB, to which I responded they were closer to 9 GB. I'm done with you - arguing on the Internet can only result in being a loser.

Also, links are awesome.

MGS4's cutscenes, all 9 hours of them, are done in-engine. But I still think fitting the entire game on one disc, even if they went apeshit compressing everything, would be a monstrous task. Not impossible, but ugh...

How deliciously devious of those dastardly devils.

Why are people so anti-disc changing/switching? This is goin further then just this silly rumor, that i feel isn't gonna happen. Do people get upset when they are done playing a game but wanna play something else? I wooooulllllddddddd play Viva pinata buttttttt halo is in the drive........ I mean we change discs everyday, just because u cant sit for 6 hours at once it turns you off to a game. Id happily get up and do 5-6 pushups then change the disc so i could play the game. (prolly girl pushups) What im tryin to say is ill come and switch the discs for you.....for a price....and lunch....plus sex.....(all is negotiable but sex).

Disregard this post, i lost sanity.

C'mon, you know MS would throw that disc limit/fee stuff out the window if they could get Konami to port one of the few (to date) big deal PS3 exclusives to the 360. In fact MS'd bend over backward to make it happen.

Ah, my bad then, I was under the impression they were using 4's, since I've seen quit a few of them before.

Very possible. I'm sure if Final Fantasy XIII is going to be more then 1 disk they'll only be paying the royalty fees for one disk.

If Konami comes to Microsoft and says "We want to bring MGS4 to the 360. It's going to take 3/4 disks but we only want to pay for one" I seriously doubt Microsoft is going to say "You pay for 3/4 disks or you don't get to publish your game".

Lost Odyssey on the 360 is 4 disks. If Lost Odyssey can get 4 disks, I see no reason why Metal Gear Solid 4 (or others) cannot be multiple disks.

While it's extremely unlikely, it would be an interesting idea to have games come on their own harddrive (or to have harddrives with packs of games pre-installed).

Lost Odyssey was published by Microsoft Game Studios. I'm sure they can get a deal on the licensing feefor multiple disks. ;)
