Tecmo's Tomonobu Itagaki disappointed by eastern 360 efforts

Dead or Alive 4 Producer Tomonobu Itagaki has expressed concern over current Xbox 360 efforts from Japanese developers.

Itagaki explained during an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu that, after seeing other Japanese Xbox 360 games at E3, he came away disappointed with his contemporaries' efforts.

"They are supposed to be software makers that represent Japan," Itagaki proclaimed. "I wonder if they have any pride? Given the world's strongest console, I was hoping to see some amazing graphics [from other Japanese developers], but I saw nothing.

"Some developers may be wondering what in the world I am saying, but they should bring something that's better than what I've made. I'm saying this from the kindness of my heart. If this continues, we'll really lose to America."

just posting this to see the team ninja haters flip out and cry, lol

interesting comments... i dont think that they are going to lose to america, as he puts it, any time soon, too many kids love games from japan... he needs to stop complaining and hurry up with ninja gaiden 2

When have Japanese developers ever been concerned with churning out killer graphics? Maybe other developers should follow his lead in creating ultra realistic semi pornographic games.

That man is all about power. I figured he wouldve defected to PS3 by now. Maybe he just really likes the xbox (cause you know. It matches that black leather jacket he always wears.)

I guess he has a point- that Japanese developers should keep working hard, cause they have competition now, especially on the xbox...but it's not like DOA4 blew any minds, and like DOA4, every other game is in early stages of development.
I wasn't at E3 but some of the screenshots I've seen for Condemned and the 99 nights trailer looked pretty damn good!

I figured he wouldve defected to PS3 by now.

there has been no proof that the ps3 is stronger yet, besides sony's word and a couple of CG trailers. kinda like when they revealed the PS2. and we all know how that went...

His tastes in games are admittedly pretty narrow. I think most people are encouraged by what has been shown from Japanese devs so far. Certainly folks in Japan are much more intent on news about the Mistwalker titles than another DOA entry. They like his games but the announcement of serious RPGs from well known names got all of the headlines.

I thought everyone who went to E3 was underwhelmed by the 360... but anyway, he's talking about impacting the U.S. not japan. It's not bullshit-- mainstream U.S. gamers don't like Japanese games all that much, especially the RPGs. I wonder how dedicated MS really is to the whole RPG front. They say they want everyone in on their system, but they could easily just flaunt the 3 major japanese devs they have and say "me too." I'm going along with it anyway, but it'll be interesting to see if their attitude changes after the launch.

and man, I wish we had major video game announcements on our front pages rather than Michael Jackson or the latest helpless country we are bombing as a result of our quixotic war on terrorism...

I'd say MS is quite happy to push RPGs if they can bring in the right titles. RPGs from US/Euro developers (Morrowind, KOTOR) have done very well on Xbox and MS is not ignorant of the big business Square RPGs do on Playstation when they don't drop the ball as seen in the Saga series. The trick is finding those titles that reach both US and Japanese audiences well. The FF series has been very good in that regard and the Mistwalker titles offer some hope of similar wide appeal.

I don't think that's necessarily true. Which do you think is more popular/sold more copies, Metal Gear Solid or Splinter Cell? Final Fantasy or Kotor? Gran Turismo or Need for Speed? Tekken or Mortal Kombat? Those franchises are bigger here than where they originated from.

--Splinter Cell 1 + 2 on the xbox has probably sold more than MGS 2 + 3. MGS 3 didn't do so well.
--FFX sold more, of course. probably not XI or X-2 though. games like KOTOR and Fable definitely showed plenty of potential to grow to FF proportions, if the IPs are nurtuted properly. they sold a shitload.
--not sure, I don't pay attention racers
--Mortal Kombat, by far. I read somewhere that Tekken 5 has done poorly. every time an MK game comes out, people hop all over it, despite the series sucking for years.

I guess I should clarify-- I made that last post while half asleep-- Through my own generalized inductions, it seems like Japanese game popularity has not gone anywhere but down this gen...but maybe that's just because this gen has been somewhat of a breakout for developers all over the world.

There is no way that the PS3 will be better than the 360. No way no how!!!
