While he's technically capable of making competent beats, they're no where near as groundbreaking as he thinks they are, and others make them out to be.
His rhymes grow trite, as he repeats himself from song to song, album to album, and they're just mindless. And I think his rhymes are self-indulgent because he solely rhymes about himself. Granted, a lot of emcees do that... but, in his case, it's just excessive, non-introverted and ridiculously superficial.
And there's this just overall stink air of arrogance where he thinks more of his music than he should. For instance, in an interview, he was asked what the meaning of "Diamonds From Sierra Leone" was. His answer described the "Blood Diamond" strife in Africa... but, if you look at the lyrics, it's him talking about how he's the shit.
Oh. And his voice sucks.
Edit:
I'm not saying he's terrible; I'm saying he's the quintessential commercial, radio friendly hip-hop, and the definition of mediocrity.
couldn't agree more with everything you said. kanye should stick to producing.
i'm also starting to hate the tracks he appears on for the albums he produced. case in point, look at "in the mood" on talib kweli's eardrum. kanye's verse on that song is just terrible and uninspired. other examples are him yelling "south" on common's "southside" and his other mediocre verse on common's "they say."
i'm gonna buy 10 copies of graduation on launch day, and then i'm gonna return them a week later. doing my part to artificially inflate kanye's opening day numbers in order to spite fiddy, but no way am I paying any money for a butchered version of one of my favorite daft punk songs.
