Ah now I think I see your outrage elprincipe.

Apparently either you bow or you shake hands. Obama did both at the same time. He probably should have just bowed.

Yeah OMGWTFBBQ I'm outraged as well elprincipe.

Well if you held dubya to the same standard you should be ecstatic with the level of improvement.
For fuck sake, it's a sign of respect.
Exactly.

I'm glad he's not going around acting like America is the ruler of the Earth. This country is nothing special, and no reason our leader shouldn't treat other leaders with respect fitting with that countries norms.

lol

My Japanese fiance says it's not really a big deal that he was shaking his hand while he bowed. Another wingnut making a big deal out of something they know nothing about, as usual.
Well, that's four so far who are ignorant of diplomatic tradition and symbolism. Any more forthcoming?
Please, stop trying to make this something it isn't.

You said:
but you have to bow to dictators and "royalty."
You clearly didn't like him bowing at all, never mind if he messed it up. That's what we're ridiculing you for, well me anyway.

To the previous commenter, isn't el the one who acts like he's a Libertarian but isn't as well?

El give me a break, bowing to each other is a typical Japanese custom. Now him bowing to any Saudi Royalty I have a problem with considering how they treat women in their country. It's not a "different culture" it's that they have no respect for women.

elprincipe you need to get your argument straight. first you blast him for 'doing it wrong':

Bush_doing_it_wrong.jpg

then you blast him for doing it at all? Do some fucking research before you post your faux bullshit outrage you douche.
Are you all willfully ignorant, or you think our tradition in this area is stupid? Try here:

If not to stand eye-to-eye with royalty, what else were 1776 and all that about?

Not about that i can tell you. King George was made out to be some sort of tyrant, when by that time the King was no longer in control of the British government in the first place. The King was made to be a scapegoat when the real issue was with Parliament.

If you don't know how to read the OP, don't comment, asshole.

Oh man I am ignorant because I don't know/care what some arbitrary white culture tradition made up by some guys over the last 100 years are. I am so ignorant in fact that I wouldn't even care if Obama used his salad fork for the main dish and he regular fork for his salad!!! That's how important this issue is.

^above pic is evidence that elprincipe is woefully ignorant, is a craven fool, doesn't do his research, and is an asshole.

I actually think the handshake tradition is pretty cool. Of course, our foreign policy has been ridiculous in so many ways in the last 100 years that the spirit of the tradition is lost. All in all, I don't think the way America's leaders greet other world leaders, regardless of the method chosen, is a big deal.
Wait, you're ignoring me? Whats going on?
Not you. I was agreeing with you and ignoring the subject of your comment. :D

I think he meant he is putting prince on ignore.
Conservatives are hilarious at how pathetic they have become.

Keep up the lulz for the rest of us, guys! :applause:
Oh no, there's no way this is a conservative only thing. How many times did we have to hear about this?

Both parties/sides get a little ridiculous in their criticisms of the president. These bows, handholds, backrubs criticism are just silly.

Edit-eh, already covered I guess. Oh well.

But the "thou need not bow" commandment from the State Department's protocol office maintained a constancy of more than 200 years.
Do you understand the distinction between "need not" and "must not"?

The culture wars are pathetic enough, when Obama critics want to harp on matters as inconsequential as this, it's even sadder.
Exactly.

Crack a history book, friendo.

Enough people have done their best Biting Pear of Salamanca impression in regards to the main topic here, so I'm-a leave that bit alone. Having said that...
I guess it's not enough to go around the world ripping on your country...
This is something I (think I) have seen you say before, an' I'm curious just what it is that you're talking about.
Yes, our tradition is stupid and US-centric. Again, we're nothing special and our leader shouldn't go around acting like we're superior. They should treat other world leaders--of allies at least--as equals.
If he was treating him as an equal bama would shake his hand like everyone else, not bow to him.

Maybe the Saudi king bowing was kind of stupid (as if it really matters anyway), but bowing in Japan basically is a handshake, even if he messed it up somehow.
If he was treating him as an equal bama would shake his hand like everyone else, not bow to him.
Bowing in Japan is not thought of like it is here. It was not demeaning for Obama to bow to the Emperor, it did not mean that Obama was somehow below him.
This country is nothing special
And there you have it, boys and girls.

When the question arises: "Mommy, what is the American progressive movement all about?"
When short on time, or speaking to a child, Dmaul has just provided us with the easiest way to answer that, in a way that anyone can understand.
