So what exactly do you have to go through to become a cop in Dallas?
You have to beat an unarmed black man for 2 hours straight. Very grueling.

No, that's how you become a cop in Philly.

Why the hatred of Dallas? The latest case is a rookie cop attempting to write a citation based on some strange interpretation of a federal law.
Now the woman who was issued (and exonerated) the ticket has lawyered up and the ACLU/LULAC wagons are circling.
I think it's an outrage that the people were ticketed for violating a non-existent local law ... but I don't think it's a rallying issue. Some young cops fucked up ... I don't think the whole department is racist, as some are attempting to contend.

"Dallas police wrongly ticketed at least 39 drivers for not speaking English over the last three years, Police Chief David Kunkle announced Friday while promising to investigate all officers involved in the cases for dereliction of duty."

"The citations were issued in several different patrol divisions by at least six different officers."

I read the article n' stuff.

This had so few replies i forgot about it. Like Myke posted, this wasn't an isolated incident, it's happened nearly 40 times in the last 3 years.

You know how many stops DPD makes? Citations issued?
I still don't think 40 incidents (out of thousands of reports) over that span consititutes the claims of a racist department with racist policies.

No, chalk it up to a few racist officers in a very large department. Not call the whole department racist for despicable actions by a handful of officers. Absolutely despicable to give tickets for that reason, and absurd it's happened (in limited numbers) for 3 years. But I get peeved when people through police in general, or whole departments, under the bus for the actions of a few bad apples.

The problem is that their supervisors had to have known about it. The people that process the tickets had to know about it. How come there weren't any other cops that stepped forward and said this is wrong? You're telling me that those cops didn't say a single thing to the other cops in the precint? No one bragged to a single co-worker about getting "stupid" Mexicans with trumped up tickets?

Somebody else in the department had to have known about this. The fact it was apparently not brought up (or ignored) shows complacency. I wouldn't say they're all racists, but i don't think it stops at the officers who wrote the tickets either.

I'd agree with that. There was definitely probably some turning the other cheek going on, but it's a stretch to say it was encouraged given the relatively low number of tickets/officers involved.

Though traffic tickets aren't talked much about in police circles, where the focus is on busting criminals and catching the big fish. At least when bragging rights comes into play.

Also, if we want to get our "isms" straight, this would be more a case of ethnocentrism vs. racism since the tickets were for not speaking English.

But wouldn't that mean that them not speaking English was the sole reason for the tickets? That seems kind of hard to believe.
