I've got an interest free loan from work for up to $2,000 on PC related hardware. I've got a desktop that I built almost 8 years ago or so, haven't really upgraded it. We've got an old laptop so we want something new.

I'm looking portable. I'd like something newer and faster that I could play some new games, but not looking for the most expensive game machine out there to run everything at optimum specs.

Would I'd like is to budget something for around $1200 (hopefully somewhere with no tax) and then look at a LCD/HDTV with the rest.

Any suggestions? If there's a better thread for this, feel free to point me in the right direction.

Do you want a mac or a pc? What "new games" are you looking to run on this computer? Do you care about how it looks and/or the weight of the machine? Are you looking at any brands and/or specific models?

Gonna go with PC. New games, I haven't played anything in like 5 or 6 years on PC. I'd be happy to play really anything, but maybe FPS or even some strategy games like the Dawn of War 2 series.

Looks and weight, no. Although I am kind of thinking 15" instead. Specific brands, no, but would like something reliable.

i'm admittedly out of date on laptop hardware, but at least how it used to be, gaming laptops are monsters. even more so when you slap on that cooling pad it will inevitably need. depending on how you define portable you might just want to get a desktop and haul it around lanparty-style when needed since portability seems to be the only reason you want a laptop. you said you don't care about weight in your recent reply, so why go with a laptop at all?
