Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Kickstarter as an entity is fine. That doesn't mean that it is good or beneficial for a person to donate to one. I'm not sure what your point is. No one else here is talking about ideals.

Every kickstarter I've ever seen is either going to get funded or not, regardless of whether or not I back it. My funds don't matter. This is not a voter idealism discussion.
Well I think my point was pretty clear. Kickstarter has helped fund good games. Which was a reply to someone sarcastically saying kickstarter Best moments was funding bad games such as mighty no.9
Then you jumped in with an unrelated point that the games that I mentioned are cheap now. Confused me because it's not really counter to my point or a support for it. Just unrelated...

I think only one time my money from a Kickstarter helped fund a board game (they only beat their goal by a bit over a $100 if I remember correctly). Course the board game isn't in my collection anymore, and I thought it was a bit too basic, but that's another point entirely. I do agree for the most part that most Kickstarters get by even without your support. You just support them for goodies or such. If it's a digital game, you can get it later such as Divinity.

I also agree on Kickstarter playing up nostalgia a lot. I know I had Soul Saga backed cause it was like classic looking FF type game and Vita was one of the choices. I have no hope for the thing anymore, but it sure played on my nostalgia. This was the same for that one Secret of Mana looking game Cryamore. I do hope they're decent and playable someday, but honestly I should have just waited till they came out.

I really don't do Kickstarter anymore, but for some like my Glory to Rome Black Box.....yeah I wouldn't have been able to get that one easily (and if I ever sell it off....man it's worth a decent amount now!).

Kickstarter is a nice idea on paper that doesn't work in practice, especially not with video games. Sure, there have been a few success stories, but frankly I find it hard to buy into the idea that none of those would have happened without Kickstarter, and regardless those few successes don't even come close to matching the failures, the lies, the abandoned backers, and the outright thieves.

Ultimately the system is too flawed to support.

I have always, and still think of Kickstarter as a donation system.  Isn't that sort of the idea when it first began?  It's just that as time evolved with projects, unless you give people something for donating (yeah, I understand the irony in this system), your project will more than likely fail.  The projects just became more, and more advance to the point that now it's less donation, and more of a "you fund it, you buy it" type of scenario.  It's fine for those going into it wanting to support the project, it's awful for those looking to buy something.  It's just interesting seeing the way it evolved/devolved into what it is today.  Entertaining if you're watching from the outside in, but not as fun when you're way inside trying to find a way out.

I heartedly agree and I generally dislike when companies/bigger players in the industry use Kickstarter, even though you feel they can do the funding themselves. I saw this is Shenmue 3, any of the board game company Queen Game's Kickstarters, Sekai Project sometimes, etc.... Just like I said before...physical goodies only.....everything else can usually be bought after release.

Yeah the system is totally abused and now in most cases it's simply groups that want money.  Absolutely it's closer to being a donation;  it's not an investment.   Now often times it's companies with previous track records, that are working on multiple projects, asking for private donations.  So they can work a little overtime or something, at their own leisure, off our dime.  I would also say that the failures and frustrations vastly outnumber the success stories.

I backed five different kickstarters. Three being records, one being the Hey Joe Coffee Mug, and only one being a game, which is Undead Darlings, which didn't make its goal, but I followed them along to Patreon. The only one that took some time was the Hey Joe Coffee Mug, which I got in on from day 1 so they had to go through every imaginable step before even thinking about shipping them to their backers. I believe it was 2011 when I backed it and wasn't until 2014 when I finally got the product. The end product was considerably different than what they started as, but as Squarehard mentioned, I saw it more as a donation to help them. Honestly, getting the product years later was like getting a surprise gift in the mail.

Kickstarter IS a donation system. It's not just how you should think of it, it is the very nature of the system. Contributing money to a project on Kickstarter entitles you to NOTHING. This is as it has always been. Anyone interested in backing a project on Kickstarter should always go in with this in mind.

That said, there is definite value to a system like Kickstarter, and the industry on the whole is better off for it. Investment-based systems of finance are driven purely by money. If something can't turn a profit, it won't get funded. A donation-based system allows for projects to be driven by enthusiasm, as opposed to profit. This is the value of crowd-funding. It allows projects to be funded based on the desires of backers, as opposed to simple profit. Some projects can only be funded through such a method.

It is also why we so frequently see nostalgia for older properties showing up on crowd-funding services. Digging into nostalgia is an easy hook for appealing to people for something familiar but forgotten.

I don't particularly object to Bloodstained changing their target platform from Wii U to Switch. But then I own both a Wii U and a Switch, and I didn't back the project on Kickstarter. I didn't really have a horse in this race to begin with.

Also watching Vic and Midori-chan playing Paladins which first I didn't realize was out on PS4 and second I didn't realize had so many waifus that I now have an interest in getting it. I need to convince BRW to get it as well who recently got tired of Overwatch so what a perfect time to play another multiplayer game with so many unique characters like the guy with the giant shield, or the waifu with the bow, or the edge lord with the mask, or the soldier... wait a minute...
No way. :speaktothehand: Vic even offered me a beta code, thanks but no thanks. Have not heard anything good about that game, and I'm already sick of Overwatch, pretty sure I don't need a clone to remind me of it. It's like being tired of eating pizza, changing the shape to a square or adding toppings isn't really going to help. Plus, too many other good games lately, too busy discovering the world of the old ones, or playing as Too Booty, or training to be a professional Hitman.

:ps4: Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters Daybreak: Special Gigs! - PlayStation 4 First Edition $11.52

:br: Digimon Adventure Tri.: Reunion $14.37 (Pre-order, normally $18)

:ps4: Reus ex $12.72

:ps4: Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 $39.99/$31.99 (Listing up for physical version)

After MuvLuv, I will not backing any Kickstarter. 2 years, still nothing.

They're going to have to offer me a happy ending to even consider it backing anything in the future. :nottalking:
They have provided Steam codes for the 1st Muv-Luv game and it's been only half a year over there estimated delivery date. There updates have been ok considering they actually tell you what's happening to the physical stuff unlike Grisaia.

Most people use Kickstarter as a storefront so that's pretty much how I think of it for most projects. It's pretty clear the goal of gaming ones is for people to buy the game before the game actually exists.

At first I was excite, and then I realized that if I bought all six of them at this price range I'd be paying nearly $100 for what amounts to a single season of anime.

I asked this in that other thread, but maybe this would be a better place to get a proper answer. Does anyone know what's up with the "First Edition" bit? Is it a launch edition with extra stuff or what?

what is this? If this is a sequel to the Digimon Movie (As it was released her, I think it was the Digimon Adventure movie 1 and 2 in Japan merged into one film here) I will buy the shit out of it. Love that movie so much. I may buy this anyway but I'd especially buy it if it's a follow up to that movie.
It's basically the first part (of six) of a new sequel series to Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02, set after Tai(chi) and the others from the first season have entered high school. Since the movie you're talking about is set in the same world, it's tangentially related, but I'm not sure even the original movies that one was cut from were canon.

Sorry to hear Amazon went with bubble mailers, again...Yeah, that 20% discount is my CAG Kryptonite and I was *this* close to ordering TouHou through Amazon, even though I had secured one through NISA. I thought better of it when I looked at my damaged Tales of Berseria and Bravely Second LEs. But like you say, sometimes they're the only available option for securing a preorder, at least I can return it easy and often enough to finally get an undamaged copy (even that is starting to be not worth the time and effort).

Look at the FE: Echoes LE, that is gonna be shipped in a bubble mailer from Amazon, guaranteed. 20% discount is nice, but not good enough if it arrives wrecked...*sigh* who am I kidding, that's probably where I'm gonna end up getting my copy...
Yea I didn't learn. I buckled and ordered the FE: Echoes LE. Dealing with Gamestop lately is even worse. Hopefully BB wii put it up so I can cancel because FE is one of my favorite series. I know it's gonna be in a bubble mailer cause my FE Fates one was and it came damaged.

I think I saw your post a while ago on the AWD thread about how you loved that Digimon movie (and I think it was you who posted the deal as well.) While I never bought it, I always wanted to say that I too loved that movie as a kid, and even to this day it's one of my favorite movies of all time, not just animated. The soundtrack and character interaction is so damn good! That scene in the beginning where Sora gets pissed off at Tai and the Bare Naked Ladies track plays along with a montage is so well done. There is so much hype building up as well for the final fight and Omnimon appearance. The 2nd movie is decent as well, but not nearly as good as the first.

To answer your question, it can be thought of as a sequel. It's more of a sequel to the first 2 seasons of Digimon than just the movie. But I almost refuse to acknowledge the 2nd season due to how it butchered the original cast, and we never got that T.K. x Kari relationship. So it more or less takes a few elements of season 2, a few characters and story lines, but it definitely starts at the end of season 1/first movie. So it's a follow up, but not in the sense that you might imagine. More like a Netflix 6 episode short than a complete movie.

There will be 5 more of these though, and each one seems to get better than the last. In fact, aside from a few animation issues, I think the plot points and character development in this series is phenomenal, and really stays true to the original Digimon we all know and love. Basically, since you loved the first movie as I did, this is a definite must watch.

Ahhh... sorry for the double post, missed this one and I wanted to answer these questions separately.

At first I was excite, and then I realized that if I bought all six of them at this price range I'd be paying nearly $100 for what amounts to a single season of anime.

Yeah, they really are pushing it a bit if they charge almost $20 for each set. But I don't want to think of it as amounting to a single season, but more like 6 smaller seasons. Kind of like how FLCL had only 6 episodes (I think) or Netflix shows that have small seasons like Stranger Things. There's enough content to justify it, but I also think they will release a collection once they are finished, which might still be around $60-80. I think the last movie actually had more episodes than the previous ones, so if they are doing it this way, it'll end up being even more than a 26 episode season.

As far as I know, there isn't any bonuses or LE contents with it. My guess is that since this is a updated version of TTGHD, I guess they might've confused themselves with the original version or something? Probably just a name error like them listing a limited edition 3 times in the title. Googling it now and Aksys and Nisa never mention anything about bonuses, so I think it's just the standard edition with a name error. Hope it helps!

I think the original movies are canon, if I remember correctly, the only appearances of Omnimon is from the first and fifth movie. He was never in the show, so if they reference him/it in Tri, he had to have had a past. And I completely agree with your explanation, being that the movie was a sequel to the show, and Tri is a further sequel, it makes a lot of sense them being at least spiritual sequels.

The thing about Tri is it's so boring. It's pretty much the characters living their monotonous daily lives and digimon just happen to be there. Most episodes are about nothing.

That scene in the beginning where Sora gets pissed off at Tai and the Bare Naked Ladies track plays along with a montage is so well done. od as the first.
That's funny that got mentioned because yesterday I listened to that song (One Week) and all the comments were talking about Digimon

I saw them live over the summer too, singing about boom anime babes and chinese chicken lol

I'm surprised that no one else is excited for that Seiken Densetsu collection announcement.  I think that it's super cool!

I was actually playing Final Fantasy Adventure on my Gameboy when I was a little boy.   I was lost and got stuck about halfway through the game.  I've also always wanted to own a hard copy of the Secret of Mana which I was never able to afford as a kid.  Hopefully they make an English version of this cart, or that the JP game is able to install English versions of the first two games just like with I am Setsuna.  Either way, definitely looking forward to buying this.

Dat box art tho, too!

I'm ecstatic for it but I'm simply trying to temper my excitement until there is confirmation of english text or a localized release.

I'm glad it's giving Seiken Densetsu 3 a little renewed attention, since as far as I'm concerned that's the best game on the SNES, but at the same time, the odds of it being brought west are slim, and I don't even own a Switch, so it's hard to get worked up.

I just don't have a Switch yet, so discussing these things makes me more sad than happy knowing I have no way to play them. :*(

Well I ordered the VITA games and I have not received anything from them.
I ordered the Vita games too, but they sent out the steam codes to me already.

No matter the platform you ordered, you're supposed to get a steam code regardless.

If you log in to your backerkit, you should find a code there.

If it's not there, then send them a message, or if you can't get in to your backerkit.

If you want something more beyond that, well, too bad! :D

I'm thinking about getting the Seiken collection anyways. I've beaten Seiken 2 at least 10x, Seiken 3 at least 3x, so it's not like I really need to understand 100%...

You may need to. It doesn't seem like S-E likes localizing their older games....where is my Star Ocean 2 PS4 version....and I'm sure SO3 for PS4 will take a while if we ever get it.

I think the Secret of Mana was the 2nd Squaresoft game I played on the SNES after FFVI. I have really fond memories of it but since I don't plan on owning a Switch till at least some decent bundle comes out for it it's hard to get excited.

I would be jizzing all over myself if the Seiken Densetsu collection has english versions announced. I had a near perfect save of secret of mana back in the day. Earliest farming I can remember.

I ordered the collection, I"ve played SoM enough to enjoy it without the translation, really really really hope they do bring it out here tho

Anyone happen to have a Play Asia coupon handy that works?

You know the 1st game already came out right? Alternative is taking longer cuz it has more text.

Unless you're talking about the physical stuff. The majority of the backers voted to have almost everything shipped together.

And if you're talking about the Vita version, the PC release has more priority. But they are working on it and is in the process of getting ESRB rated (well Muv Luv Extra anyway)

And like someone else mentioned, it has been only 1 year and some months. It would be two years in November

Yay, finally broke into the 4000s in arena.   I seriously had no idea until last week just how big of a bonus the bonus heroes give you.  Not that it would have mattered for me on some of these weeks that were 100% current banner focus heroes.

Ephraim is a beast of a tank btw.   +def/-hp and he's thirsty for Deathblow 3, and something like Lancebreaker 3.  I've been loving the inheritance stuff so far.

Nice pics. I was tempted to import it, but decided to wait for the eventual US release. I sure hope they keep the box art/instruction booklet the same. Based on Xseed's excellent release of Estival Versus, I have faith in them.
