Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

This is true. They are entitled to their opinion and I'm not mad at them for it. I just read that and was shocked, like, really? Out of all the games on your list, you think Skyrim is better than all of them?

Of course, I'm part of the minority that doesn't care much for Skyrim, but still.

agreed. FF6 and Chrono Trigger are the two best video games of all-time.

But lists are subjective. They did a good job. Skyrim was probably more influential to a larger number of people anyways. The list is far more accurate than some people are giving it credit. I was shocked to see that so many industry people considered FF6 and Chrono Trigger to be in the all-time top3! I was expecting stuff like FF7 and WoW.

IGN also gave Etrian Odyssey 3 a 6/10, so their opinion is moot...

...even if they are right about FFVI being better than IV                    :D/

Really, us old timers shouldn't bicker about that.  Imagine having this discussion with a kid nowadays.  They might say Clash of Clans is better than both.

 
Fire Emblem Echoes seems to be reviewing a little better than I expected given the fact that it's not like the later games in the series. Here's the aggregate review threads on Reddit and NeoGAF.

Has anyone triy Akibas Beat yet? I got mine from Amazon today, but I'm considering sending it back based on impressions I've read. Anyone have any thoughts?

I played a little bit last night. The world map (Akihabara) is bigger than I remember from Akiba's Trip, which is nice. But there's not much going on in that world, so it's a little boring looking. (NPCs are just colored silhouettes that don't move). The combat reminds me of Tales of Symphonia and I am okay with that. Will need to play some more before I have a more developed opinion on the game.

 
Cool Star Ocean....another game i'll wait till it's cheap to get (though this one is fun). I really wish we were getting the Star Ocean 2 though....

Star Ocean: TtEoT? I still have my ps2 copy thay came with the shining artwork box. I think also bought the strategy guide for it i think. Time for me to go through my storage tonight!

For the Overwatch players, a new event starts next week, May 23rd. It's the one year anniversary for the game and will last three weeks to June 12th. No actual info, but I figured I'd mention it. Will probably post once more about it once we get images of skins and what not.

Pretty excited for this. Im guessing il be spending alot on loot boxes again this go around. Got all the skins from past events except for the mcree america skin during the summer event. I hated not being able to unlock that skin. Sucks also that wasnt available to purchase with coins!

Star Ocean isn't a remake. Its just one of those remasters for the PS4

Short and simple: It's quick cash.

Slightly longer: For people familiar with PS4 development and PSN APIs, the coding end of this would be extremely minimal (add trophies, run some optimization stuff, done). Square Enix is the publisher, and they have an established business relationship with Sony - they know how to submit a game, get the forms filled out, and push something through to the store with minimal effort. This doesn't have to sell many copies to end up positive on their books.

I do agree that it's an odd choice for re-release, though. Maybe it's just an easy license to work with? There are definitely games in the Square Enix catalog that would shift more units with the same amount of effort, but hopefully this is a sign of things to come. I'd love to see Chrono Trigger or some more of the classic FF titles get PS4/trophy support, personally.

Til the End of Time is probably my favorite Star Ocean, but I can't argue that it definitely put a bullet in the head of the franchise. Where can you go from the End of Time.

Surprised to see some people idled in p5 as well. I'm at around 140 hours and probably have idled around 40 hours as well. I'm pretty sure near the end too, just finished I think 4th palace? Kinda wanna power through I'm getting tired of all the dialogue now lol
 
Are you idlers on PS3? I rest mode pretty often in P5, otherwise my time would probably be even higher than it is now - I'm at about 122 hrs I believe. I'm right at the final boss too, so I took a bit longer than people made it sound like the game would take. Then again, I played on hard mode. Also they changed it so when you game over in this game it continues rather than fully restarts so play time is retained... I died a lot lol.
