Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

If 200 is your buy in price for the slim why didn't you get one when dealseeker was posting them for 180 last year? Though really you may as well just wait for the pros price to drop at this rate.
Know you weren't talking to me (though I was talking to the other poster so, kinda?) but man, I must have missed the 'dealseeker' posts. I have a gaming PC, so that's why I didnt care too much about the consoles in general. But if I saw that deal now, I'd be real tempted to get a PS4 for the kids primary use.

That dude constantly spams this forum with pseudo-intellectual nonsense and blogging yet doesn't own any of the modern gen consoles nor a gaming PC. No idea why he even comes here. And now he's decided to infest the JP thread. He's annoying as fuck. He flips games on Ebay and still whines about not wanting, and not buying, $200 consoles. Just ignore him.

Will they port all the issues of the PS3 game over? LOL

All joking aside, those are two great games that I've never finished, so a good buy if it happens, and once I get a PS4 of course.

i feel like both of those packs are probably true, sega seems to be on a roll with well received upgraded ports recently.
I'll probably get shenmue & hope the steelbook preorder trend continues.

I got one back then myself because you can't beat that low a price and it was a dinger so brand new sealed an everything. I would like to have a pro but not enough to pay close to double what that slim cost me. At least I have a pro controller thanks to amazon putting thousands in warehouse deals for 23--34$

On what system? I'm still debating if I should get it for PS4 or Vita.
On the Vita.

There's a couple of reasons why I prefer the Vita version over the PS4. Mostly because it's similar to a visual novel, and I much rather play VNs on the Vita than the PS4. Even with remote play, it's just a more convenient experience being able to pause anytime, and play anywhere on the go without hiccups. It's also not demanding graphically, so I'll say it'll look similar on PS4, or maybe even a bit better on the Vita since everything isn't stretched out to a larger resolution. And lastly, it's weird... you'll know what I mean but some of the scenes I rather play it away from others and not show it on a TV where people can walk by.

There's also reasons for the PS4 version over the Vita though. You can stream it directly from the PS4. It's remastered for the PS4, so they might've added something or at least polished things. And both games are in one disc, so it's probably the cheaper alternative than buying both of the rare Vita versions. And I guess if they updated the visuals, it'll look better.

There's some things I'm curious about though. Is the blood always pink or did the censor the localized version? And is the anime vastly different? I'm thinking I'd stick with the game and not go for the anime, unless they differ a lot. I can't imagine the anime living up to the game.

I'm also really hyped for V3 now!

Thanks, guess I'll keep waiting for a deal on the Vita versions.

Also in the anime the blood is also pink so I'm guessing that's how it's suppose to be. It's a really good anime but I don't know how accurate it is to the game.

The anime skipped a lot of things from the game I heard. There was never an anime based off the 2nd game so if you played the games you don't really need to watch the anime adaption and can just skip to watching Danganronpa Despair / Future Arcs.

the Danganronpa anime was still really good for what they could squeeze into a 13 episode show.
the neon pink blood is part of the art style not censorship.
the anime is what made the series so popular in the US.
the anime's popularity was probably why we got the rest of the series' games localized.

rem is best waifu, sorry white cat. lol

I think the pink blood is technically censorship. Japan is stricter about violence, so they get around it with green blood, pink blood, etc.

Wiki has a list of games in Japan with blood removed.

As for Vita vs PS4, I think the touch controls are actually harder than the stick controls. I'd just wait for the dual pack of Danganronpa 1+2 on PS4 to go on sale, and skip the Vita version. I played 1 on Vita and 2 on Vita TV with a DS4, just for reference.

I doubt there will be deals on the physical vita versions anytime soon. Maybe the digital versions will go on sale. Danganronpa 2 used is discounted by $5 at Gamestop though, making it $25. Both are still pretty expensive, I actually had to buy each for $35 before. So if cost is a factor, PS4 version is much cheaper.

Also, since you've watch the anime, is there a dubbed version of it? (I'm too lazy to check...) If so, which one did you watch?

I played it with English voices, and wow... it's the best voice work I've ever heard in a video game. I guess I'm biased too, having just finished it and usually preferring dubs over subs. Before this, I thought Neptunia and Blazblue had the best voice overs, and I would even go on to say the English VAs were better than the Japanese ones (I'm probably Public Enemy No. 1 now for having said that.) But the Danganronpa voice overs just blows even those games away, and even made me think the game was made to have the characters talk in English.

So when you do get the chance to play it, I recommend the English voices option, and playing with headphones.

Problem with the Danganronpa anime (at least 3) is Monokuma's voice isn't the same as in the game and that voice actor just isn't as good. JP Momokuma voice sucks too. The English one from the games is so perfect.

Because Nobuyo Ooyama is suffering from dementia, and stopped voicing both Doraemon, and Monokuma in 2015.

Doraemon is best Monokuma.

I didn't think the Japanese voice fit at all. He sounded like a baby whereas the English voice in the game actually sounded like someone who was messing with you and having a good time doing it.

The English voice in the anime is just bad though.

My favorite voice from the game isn't even Monokuma. It's Celeste. She deserves an award for that performance. Toko's, Junko's, and Hina's are amazing as well.

Yes, yes you are.

How can you deny Monokuma's (original) Japanese VA.
I didn't say the Japanese VAs are bad, I actually haven't heard much of them, but the little I did hear I thought was decent. I was really referring to Neptunia and Blazblue with that earlier comment, and I'm familiar with both sets of voices having played those games several times in both Japanese and English. And in the end I still prefer the English VAs. But like I said, I'm biased since I don't know a word of Japanese, and the English voices always seem to convey much more emotion and hidden meanings to me.

I think the English voices for Danganronpa (and Neptunia since you brought it up) are really solid and better than the JP ones overall.

Whoknows' Danganronpa facts:

1. Junko is best DR1 girl and overall girl

2. Mikan best DR2 girl

3. Makoto is a loser (esp in DR3)

4. The Eng VA is better overall

5. Toko is pretty good too

6. DR3 anime isn't good (mainly future arc)

I played the first Danganronpa in English. When I did the NG+ mode I did it in Japanese, and never looked back. The ENG actors aren't terrible, but just a little flat for me given the stupidly over the top scenarios you're experiencing. Byakuya in particular sounds like an early 00s dub hentai voice actor. and not the good kind either

I've dropped all the anime adaptations early on because it's a waste of time if you already played the games.
