Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE SE announced. Will be sold at GameStop and Amazon for $79.99. No links yet to preorder though.

When the Wii U game launches on June 24, it will also launch with a one-of-a-kind special edition available at GameStop and Amazon.com. The special edition contains the Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE game, a 5x8 color artbook, a six-song soundtrack CD featuring some of the game’s awesome music, six song cards and a sticker sheet at a suggested retail price of $79.99. The bundle will also contain DLC codes for all five sets of planned downloadable content. Releasing at launch, the five DLC packs contain additional quests or costumes, and will cost $1.99 each if purchased separately outside of the special edition.

^That looks meh for $20 extra, but the "DLC download codes" worry me...

Why u hate steelbooks, NoA?

EDIT: Thanks for adding the quote with the details. The DLC is worth only $10 and I can't justify those other "bonuses", so I might stick with my standard edition.

Looks pretty underwhelming but I'll probably preorder it if I can get it from Amazon (and hope they don't send it in a bubble mailer).

So am I, but I still can't justify the LE for $16 more.
If you were going to get the DLC that's another $10 on top of the standard edition price, so it's only like $6 more for the LE. But I agree the LE is pretty weak for the price and the art book is probably going to be minuscule in page length.

The music CD only has six songs, I wouldn't look at the artbook, and I wouldn't use the stickers. That $6 could be put to better use IMO. I also have a bunch of eShop credit lying around and the DLC would give me an excuse to use some of it.

I can easily see the Tokyo Mirage Sessions SE selling out as fast as Fire Emblem Fates: SE did. Won't take any chances.

Need to cancel regular edition and pre order the Special Edition. My fandom is too strong

The only reason the Fire Emblam Fates Special Edition was sold out immediately was because all three campaigns were on 1 cart.

I'm thoroughly underwhelmed by the TMS SE, which is a shame because I'm really looking forward to the game. I was hoping for more than the generic "Game + Artbook + Soundtrack".

It's even worse--"Game + Art Brochure (probably) + Soundtrack Selection".

I wouldn't go nuts over that LE, we know Atlus overprints copies of "LIMITED Editions" & then they're heavily discounted a few months later.

That's a terrible SE.  I mean if the artbook was larger or something, then it might be better value.  But that is small, and every single one of the bonuses are something they would normally throw in free with day one editions or a pre-order bonus.

Atlus makes the best LE's.

Just kidding. They make the worst ones
They also do a crap job shipping the items to you. I bought the Conception II LE from them and it came in near flattened. Awesome envelope mailer, Atlus.

I haven't been paying attention to Star Fox Zero until now, but from reviews it sounds like you're forced to use Nintendo's trademark and unwanted gimmicky controls with no option to play it like a normal Star Fox game.

Thanks Nintendo.

I won't judge Star Fox until I play it myself.  The motion controls thing sounds kinda annoying, but I will still give it a chance. I know there have been instances where I actually preferred the motion controls because of the increase in accuracy it sometimes brings.

But yeah, making motion controls completely mandatory for certain parts was probably not a good idea.

Still looking forward to my copy on Friday, though.

Nope, not watching that.
Ditto. I don't need to see or know anything about this game before it comes out. Already have copies pre-ordered on Amazon, with the watch. Been that way since some time last year.

The Zero Escape series is one of those that gets a free pass in my book. It's up there with Phoenix Wright and Danganronpa as a series that I will just automatically buy and play through the next entry, sight unseen. Series with really strong stories or characters often end up this way for me, especially adventure games. I do not need or want to know any additional details regarding the next game in this series. I'm just going to play it, period.

well we heard about the forced controls awhile ago (mostly in an attempt to force non wii u owners into maybe buying a console to clear stock since they have moved on and wont drop the price either to move shelved units) since the nx is supposed to come out this christmas, will be passing on that also till more reviews and other fanboys beta test it for them who cant wait, gotta good backlog and theres no guarantee that it will receive any major support right away especially with them not helping western developers properly like usual

same here though i will rent this down the line, when it takes 1-2 hours to beat per path, not much play time and reading the forced use of fighting with that small screen blocking out alot of the surroundings, gonna be very annoying , cant justify paying full price if any till i rent it,

Well I'm not buying the Tokyo Mirage Sessions LE because I'm upset about the censoring and etc etc

Resident Evil Umbrella Corps Confirmed Release For Exclusive Asia Physical Version
http://www.play-asia.com/resident-evil-umbrella-corps-confirmed-release-for-exclusive-asia-physical-versi/5f/747lb
JUST CONFIRMED: Western and Japanese Versions of Umbrella Corps will be CODE-IN-BOX - there will be no physical disc with purchase.
The Asia Edition of Umbrella Corps is the only Physical Version available; much like previous Capcom Asia releases, this title will also feature English and Japanese language options: Speech, Text, Menus, and Subtitles!

The game appears to have been reviewed at the level I expected, and the controls sadly appear to be what I expected there as well. At this point, I'm just about done with "N". I played way to many games during the Wii's life, that had motion controls with no other options when it wasn't necessary, and it NEVER enhanced the experience.

DKCR was a awesome game, that I never finished until I got the 3DS version due to a "waggle" that I had to do to make DK roll. The same action was done with a button on the SNES, and was returned on the 3DS game. Why do this?

Another game where motion controls had no place was Punch-Out Wii. Now, the game had different options, and d-pad and button controls where an option, but in between rounds, they force you to point at the screen to select you next option before the next round. I'm already holding the Wiimote sideways for standard play, why force me to turn it towards the screen just to make box sections with the pointer? I stopped playing that game as well, because everytime I had to turn the controller, I wanted to throw it at the TV.

I've loved Star Fox since it first debuted at the winter CES in Las Vegas, where I got to play it with one of the best trade show set ups ever! The SNES and N64 games are some of my favorite "N" over their history. I've mastered both games, and found nothing wrong with the play controls. Why "fix" something, or change it when it wasn't broke?

I've played Splatoon, and I just couldn't come to grips with those motion controls. When I play games I want to relax, and moving around my living room waving my arms, or turning about like a Jack-ass has no interest for me. "N" has a very bad habit of forcing what they believe to be right on consumers. It's doesn't matter how long any of us have been gamers, or what anyone's skill set is. If they wan't to do something, it's their way or the highway.

To that, I say fuck them! I'm sure I'll buy this for my son at some point(on discount of course), and I'll give it a fair go, but I already know what it will be like, as I've played way to many games with control methods from these guys that just don't work, or require way to much effort to master.

For a company that now includes easy options, or level skips for hard portions of games, it boggles my mind why they feel the need to not allow for control options. I would have bought this game day one if it had a proper control set up, but having to use that tablet for aiming is just not what I want to sign up for.

Wow, so you can't even play star fox with ONLY using the gamepads button controls?

nintendo what the fuck is wrong with you...

You can turn off motion controls in Splatoon fyi

Is anyone interested in the Bravely Second CE, that didn't get it? I have an extra copy I ordered in case of a pre-order mess, but both copies came in just fine.
