Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

The success of Fire Emblem Fates shows that censorship doesn't matter to the casual gamer.  To the hardcore fanbase that do care they preordered the CE anyway.

The fact that SMTxFE hasn't shown up for preorder anywhere is a bit worrying. They better not have it be some BS like Devil's Third. I need my Amazon 20% off

I'm waiting for pre-orders too. Can't see NOA printing many copies of it.
What are you guys talking about???? Walmart has it since yesterday (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Shin-Megami-Tensi-Fire-Emblem-Wii-U/23428788) and BB has had it since about a year ago but has been sold out for a long time ( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/shin-megami-tensei-fire-emblem-nintendo-wii-u/8713099.p?id=1218887711785&skuId=8713099 ) . The thing is, its under its original name and not the new one

You're right I see it's on Amazon just not for preorder yet. Nintendo has screwed up Devil's Third and Fatal Frame so I got scared there for a second.

I just started playing Trails in the Sky on Steam and it looks amazing.  I'm liking it way better on the bigger screen monitor with higher resolution.  Recommend picking those up at half-off during the Steam sales.

That means we probably have another 6 months or so until Cold Steel 2 is out. If they end up releasing more of the series, I'm really going to want to wait to play them until the direct sequels/story arcs are released or near released. I hate cliffhangers.

Gloczus Explains Why The Beastmaster And Prince Kickstarter Doesn’t Have A Vita Stretch Goal
[customspoiler='Reason']
Gloczus explains that a PlayStation Vita Kickstarter stretch goal for Beastmaster and Prince: Flower and Snow was considered. However, they estimate the cost would be $150,000, the same amount as the current project goal for the Windows PC version of the game. It also sited Sony’s network being divided into different regions, noting that the game would have to be approved in all regions. Since the company didn’t think that would happen before the Kickstarter ended, it didn’t pursue the stretch goal.

However, Gloczus didn’t completely rule out an English version of Beastmaster and Prince: Flower and Snow for the PlayStation Vita. The update noted that it would explore the option if the game was successfully released on Steam.

Gosh. Fine, I'll play it.

Maybe

I'm currently in the last chapter in Trails in the Sky SC. 90 fucking hours. Game is great, but it's got lots of filler. and by lots i mean LOTS.

Interesting, since I have had it pre-ordered from Best Buy since June 16, 2015. I guess they took the listings down or something then.

edit: Should have read through the whole thread before posting lol

That reminds me how I only played like 10 minutes of the first game.

And I never beat Trails in The Sky.

I hope there isn't a really big LoH fan in here that will scold me.
Cold steel is the only one I've played. I can honestly say it's the best rpg I've played in years. Yes, there are some slow parts, but once you get to chap 3 the game really picks up and you start to care about the world and all the characters in the world, even the npc's.

That ending though... Going to be a long/hard wait for the sequel.

So it's not necessary to play through the other games? I've heard nothing but great things about Cold Steel, but wasn't sure on the continuity.

Yeah, I also still have a pre-order open on Best Buy since August last year. It'll be interesting to see how they handle the old orders.

There are some things that happen and people/groups mentioned that aren't really explained. But I quick Google search provided most of the answers. Other have yet to be explained, maybe in the sequel.

Best way to put it is like watching Empire before a New Hope. I'd be a little confusing, but easy enough to piece together based on what's going on.

Thanks for the reminder. I thought I had an order at best buy, but it stopped showing up under open orders since I ordered it in August 2014!

Haven't finished it yet but fully agree with your opinion. What a fantastic game.

So far I prefer Trails in the Sky to Trails of Cold Steel. I really enjoyed the little choreographed sprite fights in TitS, but the airship side of that was rather disappointing and kinda killed immersion a bit. When I went through ToCS, I was sad that there weren't any real good choreographed fights like TitS had. Then again there's still the second ToCS game, but I won't get my hopes up.

The one thing that really bugged me about ToCS was the concert at the school festival, they built it up with all that training and never showing you the song/dance, then it comes and they literally play the same song you've heard a million times during the game. I was expecting some awesome Haruhi Suzumiya level of choreography. For a game with such an outstanding score, it just left a really bad taste in my mouth.

I want to play TiTS, but I don't have the time. If I could get a modified save and just speed thru it that would be awesome. Not sure if steam allows that though...

Mangagamer's next game is Tokyo Babel coming out 03/31/2016 10% cheaper from Mangagamer site though they don't give Steam keys anymore. It's a 15+ game so Steam it is for me. Supposedly is a long game and will be around $34.95.

VNDB Entry

Steam Link

Mangagamer Link

Beat Blades Haruka should still be 10% off if you're getting that....I'm still iffy but will decide in a day.

cold steel was no different sadly.

supposedly you miss out on alot of mentions to the other titles and some of the villains are recurring ones from the other games like phantom thief b whatever. Plus from what I recall the cross bell city stuff is taking place around the same time as the cold steel stuff is. The gameplays decent but its also just sorta there to be there. Honestly would of preferred if there was an auto battle option like digimon cyber sluts since the games too easy for the majority of encounters and bosses and the games seriously too long. Think I put 70 hours in my playthrough maybe more.

Game looks good though and the voice works very well done minus the mc's cutting in an out at random but I hear that was a coding issue. Loved the fishing minigame. The other minigames wern't bad either. Though the ai cheats at cards. it cheats so bad. Social link aspect was nice too and far easier to max than in the persona games.

ugh yeah the concert is bragged about and such in game and felt like a colossal waste of time. They don't even voice the first 2 numbers the least they could of done was that. It was a really poor decision and then having the song for 3 make it look like the characters are singing along and playing instruments that aren't even part of the bg music was especially terrible. I don't know wtf they were thinking as it was pathetic and disgraceful. Also sad that the songs in japanese with no subtitles. localization 101 would be to provide subs if you aren't going to provide english voice work. If you aren't doing either then why are you localizing it?

Speaking of they were playing random instruments as well come to think of it. Alisa was using a guitar I think when she's a violinist for example and I'm fairly certain they said what instruments gaius rean her and elliot were going to use prior. Elliot was going to use a piano and If I recall he uses a piano keyboard.

Does anyone know the cheapest place to score Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme VS Force Asian English Release?
It's coming to NA, which you can see the announcement here. I don't remember well as I don't play these games, but I want to say this particular one was not well received in Japan at all. Heard it was very lackluster in comparison to previous ones (here and other places I think).

As for where to get the Asian version if you're really still set on it. I don't really know where else you can purchase Asian versions outside of play-asia off the top of my head. Someone else may be able to provide a better site though.

Play-asia actually ends up being the cheapest on this one after shipping. The local mom and pop shops are tending to be about $10 over what Play-Asia is selling it at.

There has been no announcement about a PHYSICAL version of this game either, so it is possible it will be digital only.

I'm still worried about Gal*Gun Double Peace, as some EU stores have started preorders for the physical version but there hasn't been any stores here in the US doing the same. I hope it's not a Steins:Gate situation where EU gets it well ahead of the US. I'm close to just spending the $50 to preorder it from Rice Digital

I don't know what kind of mom and pop shops you have there, but you need to tell them to move next to me. @_@

This continues to peeve me. Why are people who quit always "Ragequitters"? This is the third time I've read the "ragequitter" headline in reference to SF5. It's incentivized quitting if people have a reason to do it. Yea, it's annoying when people quit any online game. But they are seldom "ragequitting" because there's usually a reason why they hop out of match early. That word needs to die. it's really dumb, and constantly misappropriated.

This. THIS! Man that machine looks awesome. I have been waiting for a SNES / Super Famicom N3DSXL for a long time! I will definitely be purchasing one of these when they come stateside. It will be my 4th 3DS and a huge waste of money. But I have been dying for one of these. Looks awesome, must have!

What makes you think NoA is nice enough to give us a SNES-themed N3DS? :-({|=

Yeah, the reason the are quitting because they can't handle losing.

Yea, you're just flat out wrong on this. 95% of players who have disconnected against me in SFV have done it mere seconds before they're about to die or the very second I land the killing blow. There's no denying that salt. I've experienced at least 25 rage quits and maybe 2 or 3 legitimate disconnects.
Salty bitches were running rampant once they realized they could quit matches with no repercussions and save their win-streaks. I ran into several players with a 20 or more win-streak and just immediately knew they were going to quit. Guess what? They ALL did.

This will never come stateside as it almost took an act of GOD for those ass clowns at NoA to even release the standard size N3DS here. Considering our SNES was the only one to look like ass(purple, who the fuck thought that looked cool?), the best we could hope for would be one that mimics that unit, but who would want that?

We may see a US region one offered at Play-Asia at some point, but these decals are the best way to go for now. https://www.etsy.com/listing/225761144/cover-decals-no-01-snes-for-new-3ds-and?ref=related-0

I have them on my N3DS, and it looks pretty good. I would love to get that Japanese unit, but the chances of that coming to the states is less than ZERO. I will keep my fingers crossed for and English Asian unit though, as I never buy systems for collection purposes, but this would be a first, it looks bad ass.
