Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

That White Album link for Steam Greenlight doesn't work. I opened my eyes and was like White Album...I need that since I saw the anime adaption. Think it also needs the 18+ version, but that is something else. The thing is I don't know if anyone licensed it.....seems kind of weird is all, and I hope that Greenlight page comes back up, but honestly I don't remember any licensor getting the VN.

 
Just cancelled my TMS order from Amazon. 

While I respect everyone's opinions on censorship here, I feel there is so much coming out that each product/company/publisher needs to compete at a high level to really earn my spending dollars.  When I receive orders like the one yesterday (Eshy and Logy Plus LE + Stranger of Sword City LE), I realize that I have so much to play, so little time to play it, and my priorities are shifting away from gaming in general (being a family man and all). 

I still love gaming and love....LOVE my Vita, because it keeps me gaming on short time, but Nintendo has made some really strange censoring decisions lately.  This is the last straw for me though.  Too much backlog to worry about picking up every niche title simply for the purpose of owning every one.

Hope this helps any of you on the fence.

 
The few of us who try to play their games they buy every month likely are cutting back. I know I am not getting Grand Kingdom and Odin Sphere Remake when they come out as the first just looks OK and the 2nd I beat the original a while back. I know Star Ocean 5 releases around the same time as Odin Sphere Remake at least but I know I want to play that badly (Star Ocean fanboy....though i'm not too happy to see a modified SO3 battle system since I didn't care too much for it). You likely can't play it all...so why buy it all I say.

It's incredible how people like Nothing like to pick and choose what they see, and blame all the uproar on people wanting to jack off to video games. There's far more going on than just bikinis. The thing that bothered me most lately was all the changes in Bravely Second, and I can't even think of any sexual content in that that was changed. I've been talking about it for months, but no, apparently I just want to get my rocks off from a game.

I'm as irritated by censorship as most of you and wish I wasn't as informed as I am, being an average consumer who doesn't realize anything has changed and could enjoy the games for what they are rather than what they're not. Ignorance is bliss and all. I realize that most of this doesn't truly affect me and is just my OCD for wanting a fundamentally unaltered product to reach my hands, translation excluded. The only one that I actually consider unacceptable was the Bravely Default shenanigans, and its the only one that I didn't purchase.

The censorship discussion has overstayed its welcome at this point. We all understand the situation. We all understand its implications for the future. Theres no need to go down the same rabbit whole with each and every single release. Detailing the changes made to each game making its way over here is informative and very much appreciated. Detailing the way said changes make you feel for the umpteenth time is neither.

I respect your opinion the same way I respect the opinions of people who don't care about the censorship.

But it's not going away. People will talk about it, we all have a place where we stand with it:

Pro or Against & that's healthy. Keeps the discussion going & It's a good one to have.

There's a handful of people adamantly against any mention of it,

we know who they are and while I don't agree with them.. that's ok.

I don't think the anti-censorship people are trying to cram their views down anyones throat.

It's been a civilized discussion (for the most part).

At least here & for that we should be happy while also remaining informed.

My concern isn't about viewpoints being shoved upon anyone and I too agree that the conversations are civilized. There is nothing inherently wrong with the views and discussions themselves. It comes down to how many times can the same material be regurgitated and repeatedly restated over and over and over again. Theres nothing new being contributed to the discussion each time the censorship hammer strikes and the debate begins anew. Theres only so many times the same voices and opinions can be retread before it becomes as irritating and inevitable as the censorships themselves.

That's just it. and there's the misconception. There isn't anyone who likes censorship. We all dislike it. Some people have just moved past it because the incessant whining gets old. It was old last summer. Not to mention most of the upset people are buying the games anyways so it all rings hollow. There hasn't been anything productive happening in response to censorship. It's just people on the internet being people on the internet (getting really angry, shaking their fist, and not saying anything new nor doing anything productive).

The first part of your post is all opinion, which again pro or con. Is fine to have.

The second part I find amusing because I think that people whining about others having an opinion on censorship and telling them to stop is actually more detrimental. Because it's outright telling people to shut up, accept it and move on. No discussion, No opinion, No thought. Is not a discourse...

If that's the case, then don't make it about censorship. Tell us that you don't want to hear different opinions that aren't align with your own in these forums. But if we get to that point then it's just "people on the internet being people on the internet" now isn't it?

My arrived with pretty much the same type of damage, but not as bad as that one corner, but a bit less crappy, distributed amongst the four corners of the box. SADFACE.

But since it's double discount, I'm less inclined to complain, but I still hate Amazon for sucking. T___T

Picking mine up later today. Couldn't complain even if I wanted to, especially since I'm getting the double 20% and I just got like 25% back on my Bravely Second LE over them fucking up the pre-order DLC

 
Nintendo can continue to censor for all I care, I lost my love for nintendo ages ago, and for games I want I just go the import route.

Still doesn't mean I am not upset but sadly it seems like corporations like nintendo are just censoring to appeal to a wider audience to sell more copies without even realizing why most gamers buy these games to begin with, sadly I do not see it ending anytime soon.

I swear though if SE censors the final fantasy vii remake I am going to flip a table or two.

You've really got no room to talk about missing a point, as long as you're saying anyone upset is just a pervert with issues. As long as that mentality exists there is clearly more ground to be made in the conversation.
 
Agreed. No one likes censorship, and it's pretty unfortunate in 2016 how some of the nonsensical edits are still happening. I try to provide info on that type of thing when I come across it and notice no one has mentioned it before just to inform people. But I usually keep my opinions out of it. In the end, the only voice that matters is my wallet, and my wallet has accepted it and moved on. Now my wallet just be like

Shantae is great. Freedom Planet isn't bad and Citizens of Earth is decent as well. Not sure how Darksiders II and Retro City Rampage DX are on the Wii U & 3DS, but those are decent games as well if they're anything like their other platform counterparts.

I'm a fan of both series and an anime fan, but the game just wasn't what I expected. After the poor sales in Japan who would normally eat up this kind of game, and the terrible SE they are trying to sell, it had me thinking twice. Then of course after more censorship, I decided that was it for me.

And not going to lie, unless something is an amazing game or anime, the art styles, characters, music, and so forth play a big part in my enjoyment. Like there are some anime that may not be the greatest, say maybe a 3/5, but if it has the best music, or awesome characters, it moves the rating to a 4/5 or maybe 5/5.

Call me shallow, but fan service can be a big selling point for me. It is why I bought a lot of trash (or to some, the greatest games ever) like Onechanbara and DOAX3 which is the same exact game as 2, except it looks better with an added minigame and a few unique features.

I'm also getting somewhat tired of NOA's antics. I just can't understand why they don't get it. You would think one person there would have enough voice to mix things up. I've been a big supporter of them, but just don't want to anymore. They are already stopping production of the Wii U this year which came out in 2012. In comparison, the Xbox 360 stopped their production this year, but that came out in 2005. So instead of trying to support their system with more games and try to move units, they go and keep their system prices high, censor their games, and just decide to come out with a new system. The total lifetime playtime of my Wii U is about what I've played my PS4 in the past 3 weeks.

That's the thing tho, there IS no discourse anyway it's just people repeatedly shouting about how they hate censorship and aren't going to buy whatever the latest game is that has it. We get it.

Y'know, I hate games that release digital only, but I don't post about every. single. one. that announces that's what they're doing. It's pointless. Sure, I'd love to think that I'm so important that the dev would read my post and be like "argyle wants a physical release!?! We need to get on that ASAP!!!" But the best I can do is not buy the game, or at least not buy it until there's a steep sale & move on.

I see it as roughly the same thing, in that publishers are not always going to do what we want. It sucks. Get over it. ;)

 
Arslan for PS4 keeps dropping in price at Amazon. I might finally bite the bullet and have Bestbuy price match the thing. Down to 23.19 now.

I'm sure it will, but I don't want to take a chance. It shot back up to around 35 a week or so ago. I've been dying to play it. Plus the guy gave me extra money back because his systems were slow, so I got it for 22 bucks haha.

My Strangers of Sword City CE just came in from Amazon. I've gotta say that I'm impressed with how it came in. It was in one of those fold over cardboard envelopes, with one of the CE corners just a little bit smushed in. Happy I got it for $38 and change.
 
Damn that Humble Bundle is awesome. I have wanted Rhythm Thief for the longest, its a no brainer.

Also my Sword City came in. Like a few others a bit of dings in the corner, probably because they shipped it in a huge ass box that it was wildly flying around in. Really nice LE for barely $40, the art of the game is pretty damn beautiful

My Number Roll Simulator 2016 came in perfect shape from Amazon. It was shipped in the folded-over cardboard mailer. The cover is nice, so it might make a decent shelf box.

So is the "anti censorship discussion" debate, basically a couple people saying "I'm tired about hearing about this, so everyone shut up despite all the legitimate complaints."

You do realize that if we stop talking about it, it encourages companies to make even more drastic changes and potentially lazier ports etc.

Yes, we are a small group on a small forum but so long as the right person hears our complaints and doesn't make a cut, then I consider that a win.

I hope my Stranger Sword City LE is well packaged, that artwork really is beautiful and it'd be a shame if the outer packaging is damaged.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to find out until tomorrow :cry:

Amazon recently switched to UPS in my area, and they never leave the package at the front door when I'm not home.
