Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

So we can all complain when we don't get it and get a $5 pity credit in return.

I've been watching anime and playing Jrpgs my entire life, but I flat out don't get idol games. Let alone Miku, do you guys seriously enjoy her music because it's basically high pitched robot noises...yeah I went there.
Wtf is this a joke m8??

Songs about vegetables make the world go round. Miku even has been in Jason Statham's LG commercial. Miku mikus everyone.

But in all honesty, the games are some of the best rhythm games you'll find these days, especially on portables. I feel like it helps that I don't know Japanese, because the voice probably sounds more robotic to those that know the language. To me it just sounds like music... which is good!

I was replaying some of my favorites from the PSP games a few weeks ago, to jog my memory. Here's some:

Thanks for the info - was Trails in the Sky FC and SC ever released as physical copies on the Vita in NA?
I would like to warn you that besides lower frame rate/lag for loading battles the text is already ridiculously small for the map as an example on the ps3 version so it's likely impossible to make it out on the vita version.

When it comes to Miku, if you don't like her
you're wrong

Have you given Miku a chance, or just heard a couple songs and based everything off that?

I didn't care for Miku in general either at first. However, my friend introduced me to the PSP game that was translated to English. I then played it and it was great. And I enjoyed some of the music. Then I got the JP PSN digital game for the PS3 and it was also great. And you can watch Miku in 3D! After that game, it actually hooked me into the series. Then I imported both the Vita and PS3 version of Project Diva that was eventually releasted here and also bought both versions of part 2. I attended a concert as well at the sold out Microsoft (Nokia at the time) theater which was crazy.

Also Miku as a character in general just seems to really fit many styles. It isn't just about the music anymore. If you're a fan of the anime style, I'm sure one can fit your liking. I honestly don't care that much about her default version and outfit, but I did fall in love with her World is Mine version. And now I see myself buying all the snow miku nendoroids each year among other things.

I honestly don't care too much about idol stuff like Love Live and idolmaster, but it has a cult following and I can understand it. However, I personally think Miku is different than a standard idol game. You're not really training an idol. You just play the actual music. And a lot of the songs are actually pretty good and don't sound the same to me like the other 2 mentioned. Went to this Love Live concert video screening at AX and I had to walk out on it.

So as one of the members said, the games are really great if you like rhythm/music games. There are a lot of visuals as well which is a nice touch unlike some rhythm games where they just have lights on a background. But if you don't like those type of games, then I can see why you may not get it. It is like someone who hates shooters and asking why Halo and Call of Duty is so popular.

dont know if anyone cares, but yesterday went into target to use the 20% off preowned cartwheel, and also confirmed that they got rid of their clearance section but found a j stars victory + ps4 and the price was reduced to 30.00

I still cringe at Hatsune Miku being on Letterman.  It feels like introducing Dungeons & Dragons to Call of Duty players.  Magic the Gathering  being played in front of World Series of Poker players for the first time.

Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't care for Miku/Vocaloid. I've watched several YouTube videos and downloaded the Miku remix of Heaven in Dancing All Night, but didn't like any of them. It's just not my thing.

I knew from the moment it was announced that that performance would be a train wreck, and I was right. I was actually hoping it would be well received, as good PR for other Japanese media in general.

Miku is one of the five worst words in the English language. Here, I can prove it, too:

Miku

Confirmed

Going

iPhone

Exclusive

See? Not even fans can argue with that.

All these Miku haters remind me of that guy that used to call Luka a whore around here...

I think they should face the same fate that he did :whistle2:

Thanks Davey and those that gave me input on Attack of Titan Vita. I picked up the $15 copy this morning and even came with 2 DLC codes.

That's rich that you're quoting people collecting Nintendo Toys as some sort of proof you're right,
because somehow they get to look down on Figure Collectors.
No I'm quoting people that collect Nintendo toys to show you that bigotry like theirs is not appreciated. People are allowed to have differing opinions, or interests. They shouldn't be banned like you suggest.

Fair enough, Although I do think he did more than just complain about 1 vocaloid to get banned.

The higher pitch can be an issue for many people and is understandable. Even as a fan, I don't always like it in some of the music. But that is also why there are other vocoloids with different pitches. It obviously isn't to the quality of a real voice since the whole point was to create music strictly from a program. It is people like you and me who are the ones creating the most music.

However, one problem with things like the Letterman performance is MIku doesn't translate to English well at all. So the vocals are terrible. I personally think they should have used a popular Japanese song or something which would have been better. Kind of like how Babymetal performed on the Colbert show or a better example would be Gangnam Style. They are in their original forms.

Something neat is since Spanish pronounces words like Japanese does, Miku actually does very well in Spanish. English has so many irregularities that it becomes a mess.

I agree, the first time I heard Miku Mambo I couldn't stop smiling. Sounded great & very easy to understand. That's not true with alot of the English songs.

Stopped in my local GS last night and spotted a Bravely Second CE behind the counter. Asked about it & they said someone canceled it. Came home, thought about it, found a couple of trades & called them first thing this morning - good friend of mine was working & he said he'd hold it for me. So now I own the CE of the second game even tho I didn't really enjoy the first that much. :p

As for the vocaloid business, there's always been one thing that's bugged me. Has everyone forgotten Macross Plus? Are the Japanese *trying* to kill us all?

I knew there was a reason why I always had a slight sense of foreboding dread when I heard a Miku song, just couldn't remember why til now.

I like Miku and vocaloid music is decent, though i'm sure I like "real" singers as well. Course those who worship either group....well...that's something else.
